Texas A&M Accepted for Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
well that's still pretty cool i think. is the new campus going to be in temple? i think i've forgotten the details.

It's about 5 miles from the College Station campus, in Bryan.

That being said, anyone in this class and future classes needs to keep this in mind. Temple will always have Scott & White, but the newest facilities will be in B/CS.

And please, please, please don't make a decision because of the sim center. AggieSean can probably count on one finger the number of times he has been there, and that was extracurricular. It's not even part of the curriculum until third year.

So is the new campus going to be started or finished for anyone in c/o 2013? Or neither? I remember them mentioning this in the presentation, but I think I remember them saying it wouldn't be ready for us. Pretty sure I would've remembered something like that.

It will be done summer 2010.

thanks 🙂 i realized my mistake right when you posted this. i'm super excited about B/CS. do you know how much temple & round rock will be expanding as well?

Temple will get to 80 for year1/2 eventually, but the facilities will remain the same. There no plans to do anything new there.

The education building in Round Rock is almost complete, but with class size expansion slowing down, don't expect a first/second year class there for a few years. Rotations for 3rd year in Round Rock began this year. Round Rock as a home base will be an option for my class next year.

I have a question to Mullie, I was offered both A&M and UTMB. I am leaning more towards A&M but still thinking about it. What do you think is the major advantage/disadvantage of each?

another question:

i like food so, what kind of food options do you guys have on a daily basis?

more specifically, where do you guys usually eat lunch and where do you guys like eating during the evening/weekends?

thanks 🙂

edit. i found something

Hello Mullie-
is A&M expanding their 3rd year at Temple class

With 80 doing 4 yr temple and ??? doing 2CS+2Temple;
come third year will the hospital be ready to deal with the new influx?
I'm not sure what this increase really means to my education when it comes to third year so if you can help that would be great.

Thanks

So there's a coffee bar at the med school building... I guess the vet and biochem/biophys buildings are close enough so one could hop over and grab a bite?

Short answer: no.

Outside of IMED and Surgery, most of 3rd year is done at clinics outside of the main hospital. These are the better opportunities. For example, psychiatry at the VA and peds and obgyn at Darnell Army. While parts of these rotations will still be at S&W, you are usually somewhere different every few weeks. This is how they've always done it and it gets you the most exposure.

There will still be around 80 in Temple at any given time, but now the others will be sent to Round Rock or CS even if their home base in Temple. The college provides housing, etc. but these are the best opportunities (like CS family med) for education and they want everyone to have them. Obviously you have a say in anywhere you are sent.

The bottom line is S&W is a huge hospital that could take the size of multiple medical schools, so the one on one attention will not suffer.

My ultimate decision was A&M/UTH/UTMB, so obviously my list is extensive. I'm not really into talking negative about other schools, but UTMB's current state is clearly not a positive thing right now. A negative for A&M could be its location. This actually becomes a positive once school starts because of how easy it is to get around and no distractions.

Any med student on here will tell you the only thing that matters about the school you go to is your sanity. If you aren't happy there, it won't work. Prestige, research ranks, the USMLE score someone from the school made 5 years ago, etc. mean nothing the day school begins.

I got the best feeling from A&M and knew I would be happiest there. This made my decision.

If I had to pick a favorite thing about UTMB, it would probably be its history. They have put out fantastic doctors for over 100 years and I would have doubts in the quality of my education. That being said, I would have no doubts about my education anywhere, so this didn't make my decision.

Summary: Go where you will be happiest. Nothing else matters.

Literally 100+ restaurants within 5 minutes of the school. Cheap students like me usually bring lunch to school and eat dinner at home. We also get lots of free lunches for various things.

Fourth consecutive post...sorry.

Many of you have sent me PMs I haven't responded to and I will get back to you eventually. It's a busy week for me and I usually don't check this much. I've tried to post more recently because of prematch, but I'm still a medical student. Bear with me. 🙂

Thanks mullie and good luck on your studies

I'm definitely thinking 2+2. I was a big rock climber in college, and the prospect of having a free climbing wall again right down the street is making me salivate... mmm... figure 4's... The only climbing wall in Fort Worth is at TCU, and you have to buy a full gym membership.

Anyway, I think having the clinical experience at S&W would be invaluable. Thus, 2+2. And I don't have a family or wifey or anything, so picking up and moving wouldn't be too much of an issue.

*SO* excited.
whoa, where is this rock climbing wall at?

Thanks Mullie! The admissions staff should put you on their payroll 😉
You've really helped me with getting a better picture of things in all your past years's posts about A&M and have probably helped shaped the decisions of many. 👍

"Indoor climbing facility"
http://recsports.tamu.edu/facilities/student_rec_center/#climbing_hours
"3500 sq. ft. of climbing space... 10 top ropes"

This two story wall, by comparison, is just 750 sq. ft., and just over half as tall.

Are you a climber, Army?
yeah, I started climbing about 2 months ago, but I go 2-3 times a week.

William & Mary has a pretty sweet looking wall. Baylor has one, but I never used it when I was there: http://www.baylor.edu/campusrec/oa/index.php?id=33604

I go to www.climbnashville.com - over 50 toprope routes, a huge bouldering section, some lead climbing..

I looked more into it in case anyone wants to be my climbing buddy in Temple, and it turns out there are options in Temple and nearby Harker Heights, as well as Austin and Waco (less than 1 hour away).

The Temple option sounds majorly underwhelming
Summit Recreational Center
Summit Fitness & Recreation Center
620 Fryers Creek Circle
Temple, Texas 76501

http://www.templeparks.net
> 20 ft walls, 4 auto belay stations, 8 belay stations.. Enterprise wall. located in a raquetball court room. Harness and shoes free with membership. Indoor rock climbing classes available on Mondays.
Harker Heights (~15 minute drive) might be better
Boulders Sport Climbing Center
325 Indian Trail
Harker Heights, Texas 76548
(254) 690-9790
> 6,200 sq. ft., 37 ft. tall indoor climbing gym; wall designed by Radwall.

That second option does look very nice. You almost had me second guessing my preference for 2+2... Almost.

Come on, I'll belay you.

How long have you been climbing?

this is apparently a picture of the place in Harker Heights

I was climbing for about a year and a half up until May, and got to where I could climb 5.9's confidently and a few 5.10's. Since May, I've been climbing twice, so I'd probably be starting from square one, strength-wise. It'd definitely be fun to get back into it, though. I still have my climbing shoes, harness, crashpad, hangboard, etc.

Sorry to hijack the thread, everyone else.

Maybe we'll do weekends or something. 🙂

I'd drive to CS to get some climbing in.

Supposedly there's an outdoor climbing area on the west side of Temple. I've hiked where this website says there are routes, but never really noticed anything to climb.

Hahaha, yeah. Mostly a lot of regulation junk and traffic rules. I kind of wish I'd kept my promotional literature longer than a couple weeks, just so that I could pour over it with excitement.

Do u guys know about scholarships offered by A&M, when do they do it, and how many people usually get it?

I pre-matched to A&M, and I am looking for any input on Temple. I interviewed at CS and I was not too impressed with the facilities. I didn't see the hospital when I was there and from what I have heard it is nothing to scream about. I have heard much better things about S&W in Temple. I am also interested in housing availability (married with children) and any thing else useful. Thanks.

Temple has a lot of housing and it's very cheap. Cost of living is extremely low in Temple. The schools aren't even horrible

haha yeah. i wonder if all texas schools do that. my uthsc-sa packet was actually just a thin envelope with 1) congratulatory page 2) accept or decline page.

i was actually thinking about passing by college station in a couple of weeks just to sunbathe on the lawn or something. i need to find a way to channel my excitment.

If you live close enough, you could probably sit in on a class if you really want to. Don't quote me on this, though.

is there an online store that we could buy t-shirts from or anything?

No, but the Class of 2012 is selling stuff! Send me a pm, and I'll be happy to forward the email to you!

Temple is a great place to live - there are many areas nearby with better schools than Temple ISD, but housing is close, available, and cheap. Again, pm me if you want specifics.

And yes, we generally don't have problems with people sitting in on our classes, so if you're around, just ask!

Has anyone that pre-matched on 11/14 received an acceptance letter in the mail yet? If so, what is the date you have to respond by? I haven't received anything other than the acceptance e-mail.

Received my letter last Monday. If you haven't received yours yet you might want to follow up with them. As stated by the other poster, the deadline is December 5th for their office to receive it.

This is what my class does with their spare time. Enjoy.

After seeing it again, I'm really impressed with how many cameras you guys had rolling the whole time. I count four of them?

maybe the current students might be able to answer this. how required is the tablet PC, and does it matter if you buy a vista as opposed to the recomended XP?

They say it's required, but it isn't. The only thing you'll need a computer for is to take exams, and for that purpose it can be any kind of laptop provided it has a working ethernet card. And no, Vista vs. XP doesn't matter as far as I know.

I'm pretty sure the recommended Latitude XT has vista.

Don't buy a computer through the school. You will regret it.

What do students complain about with the school-recommended tablets? I'm thinking about getting one, since I need a new computer and I take notes on printed out powerpoint slides all the time. It would be really convenient to have everything on my computer. I know they're expensive, but if the school offers a discount why are students disappointed with the school-recommended product?

It has nothing to do with the product. Some people will say it does, but they are the types who would have problems with any computer. The issue is IT support.

If you need a computer, take advantage of their offer. But anyone with a functional laptop should stick with what they have.

Sage advice. Seriously guys IT is epic fail here. If you want a tablet, that's great, but don't go through the school. Order directly from the maker or go to Best Buy, buy on Amazon, etc. You can get a quality machine for ~$800. Don't waste the 2k the school wants.
