Texas A&M Accepted for Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
two questions:

1. i renewed my fafsa (from my undergraduate to graduate) and changed only a few bits of info, such as im going for a graduate degree and i will already have a bachelors. i chose 3 schools (2 waitlisted and a&m). When i review my processed app, it says "Transaction Source: Renewal on the Web" and it gives my EFC and processed date. This means im good to go right? I dont have to do anything else unless a&m contacts me for more info, right? Just want to make sure other students are seeing the same thing as i am; im a bit paranoid 😛

2. I'm pretty much broke as a joke and only have a couple thousand saved up for from now until school starts. looking for a job that fits my schedule but ive been running into bad luck (got a job at circuit city right when they shut down and stuff like that). anyway, anyone care to give me a start up cost for moving to a&m and getting situated? So far ive already had my shots taken care of. Then it's 300-400 for deposit, 700 for apt/utilities, 100-180 for first month of health insurance, and 5 bucks for a 20 back of ramen noodles. did i miss anything else? 😳 i heard fin aid doesnt kick in until about a month after school? i might just have to stay in san antonio and commute to a&m until the fin aid kicks in...

Got any family who might be able to lend you a spare grand? You're obviously good for it, considering you can just show them your financial aid letter. Then you can pay them back, with a little interest if needed.

The other thought might be one of those cash advance places. The first option would be better, obviously but not everyone has a rich uncle with spare money sitting around, especially these days. But I'm sure a cash advance place can take your financial aid award letter as proof of future income. Good luck!

zero family, but i have good poor friends, which is who i stay with now lol. looks like i might have to do cash advance if i cant get a job in time. good idea bobsagat, i love your comedy

I like his standup.

Any thoughts either way on Chappel Oaks Apartments in Belton and Wildflower Villas in Temple? Trying to decide which would be best.

Question 1, I think you're good.

Question 2, you'll get your money during orientation. Do you have an AmEx or some other card you can put your start-up on then pay it off immediately?

Depends whether you want to live in Temple or whether you prefer to live a little way out. I went to Temple to look at apartments this weekend and dismissed Wildflower Villas immediately on the basis of price. It seems to me that there are equally nice places for less money. Maybe if you like living near a golf course it might be nice though.

I was flipping through the thread and saw some rock climbers in our class! Any of you going to be in college station next year?? I just started a couple of weeks ago and I love it. We need to get a rock climbing crew together...

So is there any news on curriculum reform? I have heard mixed things from people saying they are going to change it up.

Ugh, I believe A&M charges some dumb fees and such for paying for tuition via AmEx.

I know that it's happening, but I don't know the specifics. I've heard that this is change for the good though, this according to my professor.

So is this, dare I say it, "change we can believe in?"

You know, I thought about going there but I didn't want to get the "STOP POSTING ABOUT POLITICS OMGWTFBBQ!!!!!!!!" treatment so I decided against it.

So I was looking at the IT website. I saw that there's only wireless supported for PDAs that are Windows Mobile based. I'm not cool enough to have an iPhone, but I do use my iPod Touch quite a bit. Is the website out of date? Can you configure an iPod Touch to use wireless on the Temple campus?

I am not an accepted A&M HSCer despite my very hardest hopes, but my understanding is that the IT requirements are either (a) not really requirements, (b) loosely enforced if at all, or (c) both.

Sean or Mulls will likely chime in here.

Oh, and wireless connectivity requires only an 802.11 a/b/g/n access point, an 802.11 a/b/g/n radio in your device, and possibly registration of your device's MAC, so I'm not sure how they could enforce WinMo only.

(I hate WinMo as it is. Palm Pre, hurry up.)

You will never see a bill (or have to pay) your tuition - it comes straight out of your loan money. It's one of those magic things. 🙂

Yeah I tried to wait for the Palm Pre, but got a Blackberry instead. I was getting sick of all the rumors about the release date!

bring this thread back to the first page, where it should be.

anyway, we should only have 1 packet so far, right? the packet with the immuno shots/white coat order form/etc.

It's looking like 05/17 for the Pre -- so says Gizmodo / Engadget. Not confirmed yet, but looking good.

Hey everyone, just found out that I got accepted off the waitlist! So excited and relieved! Good luck to everyone who is still waiting!

Congrats again 👍

Ok, guys, the little tiny house across the street from my little tiny house has just gone on the market. I think it still needs a lot of work - sweat equity and otherwise, but I want someone nice to buy it. They're only asking *gulp* $39,900 for it, so it's a steal, and would make a great rental property some day - I just don't want it to be a rental property now!!😉 PM me if you want more details!! It's a 2/1/1, nice yard, great neighbors.🙂 836 sf (which means it's bigger than mine!)

For those that are anal about dates and such, A&M finally posted the academic calendar for 2009-2010! It's more comprehensive than the one posted on the listserv

If you don't have facebook, there's a DFW get-together going down this Saturday. PM me for the details.

im so overwhelmed with things that i forgot to send in my student info sheet and white coat order form until today! does anyone know how this will affect me?

I originally posted a response that might have been too mean (e.g. telling you that you could be kicked out for such a thing).

No worries, just shoot them an e-mail letting them know what's up, just to be sure. It's no biggie. 🙂

Hi,

I was considering living in Presidio but I think it would be nice to have a roommate is any one interested?

I have to tell you, the trend toward nationalized health care and the anti-physician rhetoric coming from various camps gives me cause to worry about the future of the medical field. If we want to prevent the bureaucrats from giving us the shaft in order to forward their agenda, then we need to become more politically active. Is anyone aware of a student organization for conservative physicians? If there is not, I am more than willing to start one up so that we can work to prevent the catastrophic results that will occur if the current administration has its way. If you know anything or are interested, post here or message me with your email.

The Texas Medical Association has a student section, which apparently a lot of MS1s at the HSC join, according to their literature. I don't think they claim any side of the aisle, but they certainly push the legislative agenda of physicians and medicine as a whole.

Hey, how do you get on the yahoo listserv?

http://www.benjaminrushsociety.org/

I heard about this organization online. It was formed this year and it is organizationally based on the federalist society for lawyers. It's goal is to set up public debates on health care policy and push for reduced government influence in medicine allowing market forces to play a larger influence.

I have contacted the head of the society for information on forming a chapter at Texas A&M. Once again, anyone who is interested post here or message me.

B/CS people: Can I get the names of some apt complexes that are grad student friendly, AFFORDABLE, and not dumps, close to campus or on the shuttle route? Anyplace that you have heard good things about would be great. Thanks! Feel free to pm me.

Anyone going to order any A&M HSC apparel using the form we received in the most recent pack?

I signed a lease at Royal Oaks Gardens for a 1 bed/1 bath for $715 with a 5% discount for medical students (although they seem to be telling some people only 3%). It has a long private drive and is surrounded by trees, so it seems like it would be quiet. It is on the bus route. Washer and dryer in the apartment and the apartments are really nice. 2 bed/2 bath are around $800 if you are looking to double up. I'm pretty sure one other 2013er has/plans to sign a lease there. Check my posting history for the exact numbers because I posted them a few pages back. Oh and I looked at the Scandia and Huntington apartment complexes too; they were nice, but not as nice as these. Hope this helps.

Did anyone get their financial aid package yet?

Did anyone get their financial aid package yet?

Yeah, me neither, I'm beginning to wonder when all that is going to be given to us. I've never done the whole financial aid thing and I feel like I'm not doing something important

I feel like I'm not doing something important

me too.

starting med school, i feel as though this is only the beginning of this kind of feeling.... being lost/confused with med school because things are not on time/in place for us A-type personalities.

I was there last year. It will happen. We haven't heard anything yet, either. You will even become more relaxed about it - the discussion at lunch included the phrase "were we supposed to do another FAFSA? when is that due?"

All you will have to do is choose your lender, then it all disappears again in a blackhole. I don't think I ever received any sort of confirmation...the money just magically appeared in my bank account, and my tuition was magically paid.

Any idea when financial aid packages go out for those pulled off waitlists?

You're lucky if you've never dealt with financial aid before. Don't be shocked to have to borrow around $40,000 dollars per year, that is if your parents aren't going to help you anymore.

PreMedP

I am an M1 and last year was my first go at financial aid too. I just filled out the paperwork and presto...monies! If you run into troubles contact Andy Starnz in the fin aid office and he will get you fixed up. I took out the max allowed for me (like 34,900) and the school takes out tuition and fees. I have had no problems living on what was left. That said, I don't have a car note, but every thing else fits in my budget just fine. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

Apartments:

I know that when I was looking, some of the really nice ones were not in my price range because I didn't want to live with a stranger right away🙂 I live at the Polo Club apartments (about 3 miles from school) and I think the rent for a 1/1 for next year will be maybe $500 and that includes cable and internet. It's not a super duper apartment complex (i.e. Presidio or Signature Park) but it is clean and well kept. I have not had any problems getting anything fixed or taken care of by the office. Sandra (the office manager) is great and she'll be VERY honest with you, even if it means telling you something that isn't the best about the apts. As for the downside, I have a sketchy neighbor who I have had to complain about (he stole my bike...punk!) but the office didn't allow him to renew his lease, so it got taken care of. As with the fin aid, if I can help you guys out in any way, just pm me. I remember how crazy it was getting everything in order. Good Luck!
