Just wondering if anyone on this thread is attending TCOM if so can you give us your objective or even subjective thoughts so far likes dislikes of the school ect. Also do you feel like you will have good residency opportunities going forward?

I am a third year at TCOM. How much you like TCOM is really about what you are looking for in a school. If you are truly interested in attending TCOM and have the oppurtunity I would talk to the admissions office and get a tour.

In my opinion TCOM is a great school. Most of the students are incredibly down to earth and approachable. The school is growing and oppurtunities for reseach increase daily. TCOM is also located in a great part of Fort Worth. Tons of museums and very little traffic. Small town feel, big city ammenities.

As far as residency goes you can get into anything you want depending on how hard you want to work and what you want to go into. If you are interested in something incredibly competitive you might want to search the Residency forums regarding what other DO's have had to deal with trying to get more competitive residencies. If you are interested in PC you can go just about anywhere you want (our school had a couple of students match at Hopkins last year in IM).

Thanks for some love!! I know there are more TCOM people out there! Tell me about your school! Pros cons was it your first choice ect.

I'm hoping to MATCH with TCOM on Feb. 1. I wonder why there aren't other TCOM hopefulls. It seems like there is not much discussion about the school. Maybe they will show up on Feb. 1.

I've been wondering the same thing! TCOM is in a great location and seems like a great school. I don't understand why there isn't alot of interest out there. IMHO there are three main reasons. First Osteopathic! With all of the good Allo schools in Texas most are not listing TCOM #1. Second. Most pre-meds are ego-maniacs myself included and some can't handle the DO moniker. Third it is a Texas state school so out of staters are out of luck for the most part. Last. Tcom has some the higher MCAT and GPA scores compared to most DO schools. Just my 0.2 cents. Not that I am going to get any answers since I have even tried in another thread but does anyone know about the post bach grad program they offer and what the succes rate is for grads from this program getting into TCOM.

I am a TCOM fan and an applicant for 2005. It appears to be a very good school, research is growing a bunch, high USNews PC ranking, and a family atmosphere. They even sent me a happy holidays letter on nice, special stationary.

All of my dealings with admissions have been handled professionally and with great care for my benefit. I even stopped in this past Tuesday afternoon while making a sales call at the museum across the street. I slipped into the M1 class on renal/bp/hormones. The professor was very personable and called out several names of students while discussing cases.

Since I have a family to consider, TCOM and TTU are fighting for 1, 2 ranking for me. Any Texas school beats the out of state tuition in my mind. What a bargain we have 👍

Let's hear it for In-state tuition and 90% Texas resident mandate 😀

AAAAA M E N on that 😀 👍

As a recent grad from TCOM, I would like to say that it an outstanding place for primary care-bound future docs as well as acceptable for specialty-bound docs as well. What you match in is really a function of how hard you want to or don't want to work. There seems to be very little difficulty in matching in anything non-competitive, such as fp/im/psych, to moderately competitive, such as anesthesiology, obgyn, pathology. There was relative success in extremely competitive fields such as radiology and even dermatology as well.

Many, many from my class (2004) went into anesthesiology and obstetrics and gynecology, as well as the usual FP/IM/psych crowd. Surgery wasn't as popular. There were plenty of people matching into some great places as well.

Living in Fort Worth is hard to beat since like the others said, small town feel with all the amenities of a big city. Now that the Osteopathic 'teaching' hospital is closed, current and future students will now be doing core rotations in much better hospitals.

Good luck!

TCOM really is a great school. Are that things that annoy me? Of course. However, I suspect my gripes are the same you will hear at every school. Overall, the facilities are good, the admin is pretty friendly and pro-student. The teaching is always being improved, and the curriculum is always being upgraded to reflect changes / weaknesses in boards. I would say the thing that perhaps would set TCOM apart from other schools in terms of weaknesses is that the first year manip course, and at times manip in general is not run overly well. This does not really bother me (I am not real big into manip) but others that were really excited about it from the get go are disappointed. The sciences are taught very well, and the clinicians are very accesible. As you probably already know, TCOM is one of I think only 2 COMs to be ranked in US News and World Reports top 25 med schools. It has been said before that FW is a good town, and I don't think that can be said enough. It is the optimal place to go to school as far as surrounding areas- very reasonable cost of living, good climate, very little driving involved, wide variety of fun things to see and do around the area. I really can honestly say I would not want to go anywhere else. I have met life long friends there, and the most fascinating people I have ever met are in my class. We are full of people from diverse backgrounds, and it is a blessing to be surrounded by people with such intelligence and at the same time such life experience. Good luck on choosing a med school.

Thanks for your insite! Your input is what makes SDN great. I am already sold on TCOM. I think there are pros and cons for any med school but from the outside looking in TCOM has everything I am looking for. I'm applying to the graduate post bach certificate program which has a link (maybe a weak one) to the DO program. Are you familure with this program? Do you know of any MS1's in your class that where accepted from this program? On another subject. Since the close of the DO hospital where are you doing 3rd and 4th year rotations? Again thanks for help!

Hey, myself and my best friend in the 2007 class are both acceptances from the post-bac program. It is a great prep for med school, and half of us that were accepted out of the post-bacc program are in the top 25% of our class, with one of us being like 3 or 4 or something. The closing of the hospital was a good thing, as it opened doors of superior training facilities for our education.

You just made my day!!! I am applying to the post back this year while simultaneously applying to lots of other programs. What were the stats of your class GPA, GRE, MCAT scores? I have a 3.2 overall (3.8) in my major economics and a 3.1 science. I took the GRE in 2001 and did pretty well good enough for most any grad programs. I have yet to take the MCAT not sure if I will take it in April or August. According to TCOM my MCAT scores in April will not be concidered for the program because they will come in to late. Also what kind of grades did you get in the post bach program and did you have a lag year or did you get in the following fall? Sorry for so many questions. You are the first person who has said they went through the program.
