For those of you who are going to attend TCOM or know anything about the program...I just heard that students there may be REQUIRED to take both the USMLE as well as the osteopathic board. Is this true? If so, is it true for all TCOM students or only those who plan to practice in Texas? If you know anything about this, please let us know. Thanks!

TCOM students are not REQUIRED to the USMLE, but are encouraged to take it if they want to apply to competitive ACGME programs. Students need to only pass the COMLEX to advance to clinical training, but the school recognizes that USMLE is still considered "the standard" licensing exam in many specialties and states and encourages students to take it. Texas only requires DO's to have the COMLEX for licensure, but across the boarder to beautiful Louisiana, DO's are only licensed with the USMLE. Hope that helps.

Tony,

I think you will find this to be the policy of most all academic advisors. If you are attempting to enter one of the more competitive ACGME programs, it would be advised to take the USMLE. However, for most programs, the COMLEX is considered equal/acceptable.

Try reading Kenneth Iserson's "Getting into a Residency" and Jeremy Weiss' "The Definitive Guide for DOs Seeking MD Residencies." Before all the clamor begins, there are some inconsistencies in Weiss' book on what individual state's require for DO licensure...but as Dr. Weiss advises, ALWAYS check with the individual state and do not reply on his or any other book.
