I have some pretty glaring gaps in my undergrad education due to taking a year off to work and attend community college, plus taking a year off to attend a drug and alcohol rehab.

I read somewhere an MCAT above 517 w a low gpa would make schools think ur smart but lazy and possibly difficult to work with. mildly true in my case. i'm in texas, shsu is my #1 and my plans coincide heavily w their mission, but w a 3.05 gpa i can't take anything for granted... tcom is prob out of reach, and w uiw's tuition prices i might as well spam oos apps on aacomas.

Would appreciate any advice on how to appeal to shsu given that I have genuine interest in working in east texas

A 519 MCAT is competitive for all DO schools and for OOS DO schools I suggest these:
AZCOM
CCOM
DMU-COM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
MU-COM
OSU-COM
PCOM
NYITCOM
Touro-NY
ACOM
You could also receive interviews at Texas MD schools.

Here you go. Complete this grid. We can only help you appropriately if we know something about you. The more we know, the better the advice.
Good luck.
