hey everyone,

i'm applying this year for fall 2006 med school admission...

i'm a tx resident, have no clue what i made on the mcat, but i wanted to see if anyone on this thread knows of people who have gotten into baylor or southwestern with a 30 on the mcat. my practice runs have all been above that, but i'm not sure what happened on the real thing...i have a strong gpa (~3.9), and good lor's/extracurriculars.

i would love to go to baylor, so if any of you baylor folks have insight, let me know!
thanks so much

I'd say that you'd be safe with a 33 MCAT for Southwestern and a 34-35 MCAT for Baylor. This, of course, is dependent upon your ethnicity. I made a 31 on the MCAT (4.0 GPA from UT), am Asian-American, and received an interview at Southwestern, but was completely snubbed by Baylor. Though there are numerous additional factors that probably played into this, I don't think that a 31 is high enough for Baylor, and might barely be enough to get into Southwestern.

I had a 30 on the MCAT and am a first-year at Baylor. Remember to look at the average MCAT for a school and realize that HALF of the people that go to that school must have gotten LOWER than the average. Additionally, it has pretty much zero correlation with the grades that I now get in med school.

That said, I had about a 3.8 GPA, physics major from a liberal arts school, plus a handful of somewhat interesting ECs. Oh, and I am a white female.

A close friend of mine got a 29 and got in to Baylor...she withdrew from the other TX schools, so I'm not sure how she would've done for Southwestern...

ooh, you guys are encouraging!

keep em coming 🙂

I was accepted to Baylor with a 3.45 GPA in comp. sci, and a 31 MCAT, with a bit of research, and some decent EC's. My ethnicity/sex is white male, of hispanic descent.

Just wanted to throw my $0.02 in - realize that, with all the 37-40's floating around my class (and there are several dozen), there have to be plenty of scores that far below the average to make up the average...

You should also consider UT-Houston, if only as a back-up. It's also in the TMC right across the street from Baylor, and it is ranked by USNews, though it's not in the top 20. If you don't do exceptionally well on the MCAT (like say 33+), UTH would be more forgiving than Baylor or UTSW.

Damn...maybe I should have applied to Baylor!

To the OP: I just wanted to let you know that a lot of individuals go into the whole application process with certain schools in mind. What you will find is that your opinion of what is the perfect school for you will change as you learn more about each institution's so-called personality. When I was an annoying little kid, I remember telling everyone I was going to go to Baylor. Sometime before applying though, I figured out it wasn't going to be a positive environment for me, personally, to be in. The point of this long-winded monologue is that you might want to be more open-minded (this is not an attack on you) and consider other schools along with Baylor such as..........UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT HOUSTON!!!!

P.S. I think I need to lay off the Ultracet.

white male, of hispanic descent!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? How could you be a white male of hispanic descent?
Please inform me b/c or else I will assume you are trying to deny something.

I applied as a white male, but during interviews, when questions on family came up, I talked about how my mother is Cuban, my father from Tx, and how I grew up with my Cuban family after my parents divorced when I was 2. Hence white male/hispanic descent.

Yeah, he's not a URM (b/c Cubans don't count) and one of the doctor's I work for has a similar background. When he was applying to med schools he asked if he should mark that he was Hispanic or white and they told him to put the race that his mother was. So he put white. He still graduated from UT Houston. White male of hispanic descent makes sense, and seems to be what I would put down. Of course, I'm Persian, so that's a whole other ethnic question, haha.

Hi, I'm currently a student at UT Austin and was wondering what most pre-meds take for their physics requirements.

I've taken PHY 302K (the algebra based one) and 102M lab.

I've looked at several school websites and it seems like they don't accept courses that state "for non-science majors" (and 302K states that).

So would I need to retake physics 1 (PHY 317K or PHY 303K) which are calculus based, I think.

so to sum it up....it's algebra based physics acceptable or would i need to take calc based?

Thanks and I look forward to your response!

You're safe with what you have--I personally received two acceptances with this sequence, and PHY 302 K/L and 102M/N are additionally listed as satisfactory requirments for medical school on the "pre-med" checklist at the HPO office. Good luck with your pre-med coursework. Feel free to PM me with any additional questions....

Thanks AsianDoc for your response! So would UTSW still accept the courses even though they put in quotations that they will not accept coures that say "for non science majors" ?

Thanks.

Yes. Now, it would probably be preferable to take the calculus-based physics, but I know for a fact that they will accept the 302K sequence. Keep in mind that it also depends on what OTHER science courses you've taken and how you fared in them. If you have a strong science GPA and you are a science major, I don't think that they'll even take a second look at it. I've even known a few people who took some science pre-reqs at a community college and gotten into UTSW (very rare though). Drop by the HPO for that list of pre-med requirments....I started out my freshman year with this list, and it really helped me choose my classes. You're gonna have to get a little chummy with the HPO anyway b/c they handle all of your professor recs....

thanks for the advice! i am actually considering a pretty wide variety of schools, but here's my deal:
my family just moved to texas about a year ago, while i was in undergrad in north carolina, so i'm not really THAT keen on moving to texas for 4 years. my other choices are schools in the midwest and north and of course some north carolina schools. i was also thinking about applying to ut-galveston and san antonio. i have pretty strong stats at a top 25 institution, and i didn't drop below a 32 on any of my mcat practice runs, so i was holding out for a top 30 med school admission. do you think that that's pushing it?

appreciate the help and honest advice 🙂

You might as well apply to all schools on TMDSAS (Texas Medical and Dental School Application Service).....you fill out one application and literally check the boxes for the schools you want the app sent to. (Caveat: A&M, TCOM, UTSW, UTSA, and Tech have secondary applications, but they are manageable)

By the way, Baylor is part of AMCAS, the national centralized application service.

Good luck! :luck:

I think a top 30 med school admission is within your reach. In retrospect, I wish I would have applied to more schools (top 30) - at least to have more options (with TMDSAS you only have one option - the Tx school you matched to). I would recommend checking out some of the numerous threads on top 30 schools. They'll (hopefully) mention how competitve your scores need to be, pros/cons of each school, cost, typical financial aid packages...that sort of crucial info.

I think the fundamental question you need to answer is whether you would like to attend a lesser known, but inexpensive state school or prestigious, yet pricey private school. Your best bet at this point is to apply to a mix of state and private and then make a decision after you receive multiple acceptances. But what do I know?

Good Luck!

oh, thanks!

so i just check stuff off on TMDSAS and get matched? do i have no choice as to which TX school I could go to if that happens?

and then do AMCAS separately?

TX really is different isn't it!? thanks for your help on this.

If you want to apply to Texas state schools (UTMB, UTSA, A&M, Tx Tech, UT-H, UTSW, & TCOM [osteopathic]) in addition to any school outside of Texas, you will have to fill out two different applications. TMDSAS is for the Tx schools; AMCAS for every other school (inc Baylor).

A basic synopsis of the TMDSAS application process is as such:
You submit your TMDSAS application electronically and mail in LORs, picture, and fees. Some schools will require you turn in secondary apps/fees, AFTER you submit the TMDSAS app. I recommend submitting your application as early as possible. You should receive some invites from the schools either by e-mail or US mail. The latest possible interviews would be in early January. On January 15, you submit a ranking of the schools (you would rank the school you would most like to attend 1st and so on). On this date, each Tx school also submits a ranking of the top 200-600 students that interviewed at the school. Sometime before Feb 1, the TMDSAS "geniuses" run this algorithm on a computer that matches everyone to the highest ranked school that is willing to accept them (If I am not being very clear on this, just do a search on TMDSAS or Tx match or Tx application - it will be explained more in depth there). If you match to your first choice, great! - that's the Tx school you're going to. If you match to anything below you're first choice, you can either go to the school you matched at or attend a higher ranked school, if a spot is later offered to you. I don't think this will be an issue for you--you'll probably match to your 1st choice.

Umm..I hope that helped. Sorry I made TMDSAS sound complicated. It's really not...just look at their website and you'll find everything you need to know. Just post any other questions and someone will be glad to help.

Valiant attempt at explaining this crazy TMDSAS process!

I heard they weren't doing a match this year.....is there any truth to this??

They are not performing a match for out-of-state residents ONLY. Each school in TX will send the out-of-state applicant a letter of acceptance/rejection. In-state residents will still participate in the match.
