So i am finishing up my sophmore year and trying to figure out which schools i should apply to next year. I am a georgia resident so i will definitely be applying to all of my state schools. However, i really want to apply to Texas schools as well, but knowing that they let in such few oos students im starting to wonder if that would be a good decision. My Dad has lived in texas for about 20 years now and i have been visiting him and my sibling through out the year my whole life, so i do have a connection! but im still thinking if that along with good stats would even be enough to get me in.

Also! many people speak of texas med schools as cheap, which of course they are for in state students, but for oos students the price jumps very high. If i were to get in is it possible to get instate tuition after the first year if i do all things necessary to become a resident?? and also it seems like people are saying that they have been able to get instate tuition at texas schools even though there out of state because they have ties there... is that true/ anyway possible?????????????????????????

Some TX schools have a loophole that if you get a $1000 scholarship from the school (or so) then you automatically pay in-state tuition. You'd have to ask around because I'm not sure if this has changed recently or how many schools have this.

Otherwise, be aware that OOS students have a TOUGH time getting in here. This is only 1 instance but a friend of mine that applied OOS was told by UT-H that his 37 MCAT was too low for OOS that year. He did get into UTSW though.

I was an applicant this year and applied OOS to quite a few Texas schools. I grew up in Texas but haven't been there in almost 9 years (I guess this would be my tie to the state). My stats are nothing amazing (3.9 GPA, 30 MCAT) but I was offered interviews at 4 Texas schools (UTMB, UTSA, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech). I ended up getting into Texas A&M and UTMB and I was offered a $1000 scholarship to A&M which qualifies me for in state tuition. I talked to A&M and they gave all their OOS applicants the $1000 scholarship this year. I also know that San Antonio and UTSW give all OOS students a similar scholarship which gives them in-state tuition. My advice. apply because it is relatively cheap and with your ties to the state I think you will have a good shot. Good luck.

In my opinion, Texas is where it's at. It is tough to get into, but they really do have a lot of spots comparatively (spread out between the 8 or so schools down there!). OOS tuition in Texas is cheaper than IS for me, it only costs around 150 bucks to apply to a bunch of schools, and they have definitely shown OOS love to me and a lot of my classmates that applied there.

I would say that, even though it might not turn into an acceptance for sure, it is definitely worth a shot. I'd be out of luck if I hadn't given it a go!

i agree, you should definitely apply. i also applied OOS with absolutely no ties to Texas, and ended up getting interviews and 3 out of the 4 schools i applied to... my only regret would be not applying to more! good luck!

Thank you guys for the advice! I really appreciate it :], i definitely will be applying!

If you are (or can be) considered a dependent of your Dad and he live in Texas, then you might even be considered a resident.
