How does the following program compare to each other?
1. UTMB, Galveston
2. UT - Houston
3. UT - San Antonia

I am also interested in GI fellowship ---So which is the best program for me?

Thank you.

I can't objectively compare the three, but I can offer thoughts on UTMB. Galveston offers solid training with plenty of autonomy and good supervision. It is a "resident-run" program, but fellows and faculty are around and teach extensively. The atmosphere is incredibly friendly--residents often hang out together and occasionally go out for post-call drinks (there is a night float system that has been around for quite some time). The patient diversity, social and medical, is second-to-none. Residents spend the bulk of their time at John Sealy, a state hospital that treats a predominantly indigent population, and the TDC (Texas Department of Corrections) prison hospital, which I would liken to a VA experience.

As for GI, I did not rotate through the GI service but my wife did and she describes a very powerful GI program. One of the country's motility experts, Dr. Jay Pasricha, was recruited from JHU several years ago to head up the department. Dr. Don Powell is also another big name in GI--he continues his research and teaching at UTMB. The endoscopy suites are quite nice. As far as I can tell, UTMB is a solid place for GI and definitely merits a close look.

Hope this helps!
