could you please give DAT conversions?
what is UTMB and what did you do there?
how did you come up with this list?
aren't there 4 texas schools now?

I just edited the post! at UTMB I just ran errands like distributing books, crosswords puzzles, and games to patients and guest. I also assisted hospital staff with everyday needs or whatever they needed help that day.
Yes! Texas does have 4 schools now, I am going to apply to all of them. I came up with this list that are friendly to OOS applicants and if my GPA and DAT stats are average/ above average.

there are still only 3 texas schools on your list
and your list is WAY too long
your gpas are above the average matriculant (3.55) as are your DATs (20.5)
you get interview invites and acceptances from mission fit
"friendly to OOS applicants" and "stats are average/above average" are not mission fit
you should look at schools that accept Texas residents rather than OOS, those schools will likely be closer geographically to texas
these schools you should consider cutting out:
LECOM School of Dental Medicine
Western University of Health Sciences
Detroit Mercy
University of Louisville
Tufts University
Marquette University
Midwestern University – Illinois
Nova Southeastern University
Touro College of Dental Medicine
University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine
Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine
University of Michigan School of Dentistry

your list should have a few reach schools, mostly in-range schools and some safety schools
come back when you have a more concise list...

Already Applied
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
UT Health Houston
UT Health San Antonio

OOS List
Temple
LECOM
Marquette
UNLV
Maryland
Touro
Nova
Creighton
MW-IL
MW- AR
TUFTS
Roseman
AT- Missouri
AT- Arizona

For these schools, I mainly looked for which one puts a focus on clinical experience as I am going to work as a DA throughout this cycle year. In addition, many schools focus on helping undeserved communities. This is a strong talking point as I shadowed 170+ hours in these types of communities. I still need advice on what schools to add and remove. Also, I am a Texas resident.

did you check TX resident acceptance rates?

No I have not. Do you know where I could get access to this information? In regards to the list, what publics should I add? Also, my list is just long because I am afraid I don't have the stats to get accepted to a dental school so I'm applying to a lot. Is this not a good strategy? Also, thanks for the help!

DAT is around 20.8 and cGPA is around 3.6? Im just worried about my EC, since im severely lacking in them except for the shadowing and volunteering department. I think I am having imposter syndrome along with advisors saying I should wait to apply next cycle since I havent completed 2 prerequisites classes.

You can see the data for applicants to Texas dental schools here: Data Reports

To use this interactive data set, choose the entry year at the upper left, then click the check boxes one by one to see things.
Clicking 2024 year, then Texas Residents, then Accepted - shows you a 37% acceptance rate ( 964 Texans applied, 363 accepted )

Thank you so much!
Also notice the tabs at the bottom of this tool, you can click over to DAT score and see the range of scores accepted.
If you choose the Test scores tab, you might need to select "Texas resident" and "accepted" over again

My advisor also said this is a list of where Texas applicants went to if not in Texas.

Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine (Utah)

NYU (New York)

Kansas City University College of Dental Medicine (MO)

A.T. Still University Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health (MO)

A.T. Still University Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (AZ)

Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Arizona (AZ)

Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Illinois (IL)

- I also want to add Rutgers as there is a lot of clinical practice there but I am not sure. How should my list be from the ones I sent you? I'm currently looking for more publics but their OOS acceptances do not look well.

Let's not be too lazy. FWIW, the ADEA Dental School Explorer suggests that 52 schools accepted Texas residents (sloppy search, but it seems to work). It doesn't tell you how many Texas residents were accepted.

Yep! I've been using the data ryxndek collected as well and it's been very helpful

Arizona school of dentistry
Midwestern University - AZ
LECOM
Midwestern University - IL
University of Louisville
Tufts

Touro
Creighton
Missouri School of Dentistry
Roseman
Marquette
Temple

The bolded ones are where many Texas residents go to if not in-state. Do you have any suggestions of what I should add or remove? Many of the schools are for serving undeserved communities as well as strong clinical exposure, both of which I want in a school.

how much schools and publics should I have? i just want to avoid a gap year haha so I want to apply to a lot since I've been saving money for a few years now
well, look at it this way
you have 4 reach schools (texas)

1 in-range publics (University of Louisville)
and i don't particularly care for this choice anyways

and 11 safety schools (Arizona school of dentistry- i assume this is ASDOH, Midwestern University - AZ, LECOM, Midwestern University - IL, Tufts, Touro, Creighton, Missouri School of Dentistry-i assume this is MOSDOH, Roseman, Marquette, Temple)

i said this in an earlier post, which you obviously ignored
"your list should have a few reach schools, mostly in-range schools and some safety schools"

have you looked at how much these schools cost?

Sorry, I counted the schools as these

Reach: Texas schools
In- range: University of Louisville, LECOM, Touro, Marquette, Temple
Safety: ASDOH, Midwestern - AZ, Midwestern - IL, Tufts, Creighton, MSDOH, Roseman

Yes, I have looked at these prices and found that MSDOH, ASDOH, the Midwesterns, and Tufts are around 90k+ tuition a year. I figured since I am around the average matriculant with decent ECs, I wont really have the luxury to choose my schools. Since the stats I am basing off of is in 2024, I am counting the avg AA of 20.5+ as in-range since stats are increasing every year.

you better do more research
the 5 schools you listed are almost 100k a year for tuition alone...

Oh wow, I have been using DAT booster dental school statistics for tuition prices. I'll look more into it. You have any public schools in mind I should apply to?

i looked at the stats, i guess i was wrong about louisville, sorry
look at publics that are closer to texas that have a historical history of taking TX residents...

I'd only apply to Texas schools if I were you, unless you're doing HPSP.

do you think I'll have a good chance of getting accepted this cycle with my stats if I only apply to texas schools? I am also thinking about working in a rural area after I graduate so I don't think cost would be much of an issue per se.

You have a good chance. I bet you could get into at least one of the Texas schools. I also worked rural and would not recommend dentistry for more than 200k post interest. If you don't get into a Texas school, it won't be worth it.

Would this be a better option: apply to Texas schools and all the schools that offer in state- tuition after one year (within my stats of course)?

You won the lottery by being a Texas resident. You have four affordable schools to potentially get into. I'd stick with just them.

So you are saying you wouldn't recommend dentistry to anyone other than people doing HPSP or NHSC? I think every school in the US is more than 200k post interest when you include living costs. And what do you mean by worth it? Do you see any other advantages to doing dentistry that are worth it and can help someone overlook a not so perfect financial future? Or does the field suck so much that the only reason someone should do dentistry is for the paycheck?

I'm just saying as someone who has practiced dentistry, anything beyond 200-250k would not be financially worth it for your average person. Obviously, outliers exist but you have to look at averages. Dentistry isn't worth ruining your finances over. I left with 200k and I honestly still think that was too expensive.

I understand there are outliers and averages. So yes, you are saying in general it's only worth it financially if you do HPSP or NHSC. I wasn't only asking about that though. Since you didn't answer my other question, I am gonna assume you don't think there are any redeeming qualities in dentistry. Or at least any that are worth being in 200k debt.

Weird assumption. Of course there are redeeming qualities. But no job is worth ruining your finances over
Idk. You just make it seem like there's no point in doing dentistry unless you get out under 200k in debt. Which isn't the case for the vast majority.

If not Texas schools attend Roseman. 3 years in and out. Heck I would almost put this school as number 1 if I was applying today for that reason alone.

probably gonna apply to these schools. Any I should remove or add?

First, I am hopeful one of the Texas schools will interview you.

Second, Pacific is also a 3-year program though it's in SF. Cost of living super high, and hopefully you'll like the Bay Area. The main clinic building is close to the Chase Center where the GSW play.

Third, contact each admissions team and ask them to talk with some student from Texas to connect with you.

Keep Roseman but remove the rest. Don't put yourself in a position where you only get accepted to a school costing 400k+. Your stats are competitive for Texas, so I'd rather reapply than potentially commit financial suicide. I do genuinely think you'll get interviews at all or most of the Texas schools.

They look reasonably accurate, if not a little low. Still, those are all way too expensive imo. Stick with Texas. If you don't get into Texas this cycle, beef up your EC's and apply again.

will it also be worth retaking my DAT, however, I will be on my third attempt if i do so? I scored an 18 AA on my first attempt but I didn't study and minimally studied for the second (around a month but I only did practice test and no true review)

I would apply this cycle and then if you're not accepted ask for feedback from any Texas school that rejects you.

While these numbers look disgusting, there’s zero change he should turn down an offer from Roseman. Cheapish cost of living up around that area and 3 year curriculum. 3 years of borrowed living cost and tuition vs 4. That’s huge.

Any issue specializing in a 3 year program though? There's been a lot of mixed answers on Reddit and SDN

Sounds about right for Roseman. I think tuition/school cost would be around $340k+ whatever living costs are. Also you should account for an extra year of income there.

Texas is the 3rd most common place people are from in my class. Only behind Utah and California.

Let's say with the year of extra income you cut the 440k to 370k, that's still a ridiculous amount of money to spend for a DDS. Significantly better than the other non-Texas schools though. Probably the best deal for a private school.
