Just an update on the situation....i just called up Katz's. They dont have any formal reservations perse, but they have my name down and told me to call about 30 min beforehand when we show up. Also, the don't split checks (which means if you are coming, BRING CASH!!!) and there is an additional 12-15% gratuity added to parties greater than 6.

As a backup, Buca has the Pope's table reserved at 7:30...which means if we do go here (which seems more and more unlikely), we will have to wait around for a big table to open up (which could possible take an hour or longer....especially on a friday night).

So yea, see below....PM me for my number and name (you know, so we can meet up later and not have no idea what is going on when we show up at Katz's) 😀 😀 😀

I'm an MS1 also. Thackl is right... our curriculum has been thrown upside down and from what I can tell we're learning things in a different series than the MS2s did their first year.

Some things are great, some are good, and some leave a lot to be desired... fortunately for you guys we are working hard to improve the new curriculum design for you, the class of 2010ers. The faculty solicits a lot of feedback from us and I think they care about our perceptions.

How did your first semester go? Are we going to be in class 8-5 every day?

Class schedule varies a lot depending a lot of when you have clinic and/or small groups and conferences.

For instance, I was in class yesterday from 8 until 5, but some people were out at noon. I had a meeting till 1, conference from 1-3 and surg anatomy elective until 5.

Today we only had class from 9-11 😀

They are using things like small group (kind of in a journal club format), conference (physiology workshops), TBL (team based learning), and clinic (once every 3 weeks) to help implement the new organ/system based learning.

First of all: Thackl is right, I'm a wanker.

My first semester went well. I understood that my place in the class was going to be permanently at the bottom and yet I still squeaked out a pass.

You won't be in class 8-5 everyday. In the first bloc with anatomy you'll have class and lab pretty often and it can be exhausting. The learning curve changes quickly as the 2nd bloc comes around the corner since lab times are gone and all of a sudden you find yourself blessed with free time (pronounced cram time). Some will study... others will sit on their fat asses and do nothing (I'm of the 2nd type).

Our 3rd bloc just began and it feels a lot like the 2nd bloc. Lots of time to study during the day and still go play at night.

Lubbock was a shock to me. I just moved from OC, CA and came during summer when nobody was in town. On top of that I didn't go to orientation so coming into class I basically knew no one. My advice is get involved in things. It'll give you a good chance to get to know your colleagues and do things outside of just studying all the time. The stress and tension can get pretty high. On the other hand don't get too involved. If you're gonna run for this or tahat position really know what you're getting into. School is busy and fairly time consuming, especially during that first anatomy bloc.

I'd say enjoy your summer as much as possible but keep in mind at least you'll get one more summer after your first year (after that it's done for). I'm in the MBA joint program so I won't ever have a summer vacation again and I took it upon myself to go travel for a month before I started up. Oh and you guys won't get a spring break so far as I know plus winter break is only 2 weeks. If there was any traveling you wanted to do, this summer and the one after year 1 is your best bet.

Hope that was at least somewhat helpful.

Good question - I think they jury is still out on that one. We did take the NBME (national board of medical examiners) exam for anatomy & embryology, which was good practice for the boards since the USMLE is co-sponsored and co-owned by the NBME. That was our 1st block.

2nd block was a whirlwind of biochemistry, histology, and genetics. We are taught from a mix of professor notes and textbook excerpts, but required books are really only recommended as it seems like everyone uses different materials.

There is a small movement in our class called "step 1 prep" where students get together (already) and discuss USMLE questions pertinent to the block material, but I haven't had time to participate in this.

A LOT of us use BRS books to study. BRS = board review series (thackl got me hooked on BRS for anatomy after recommending the series to us last year). BRS is great because it chisels the info you need to know down into what you need to know for the steps. However, like you mentioned, some professors emphasize different things for various reasons, so it's best to combine notes and a text.

We're covering micro this semester (and ending the year with the micro/immuno NBME) so that we can get out EARLIER second year to give us more time to study for the steps. I think this will be helpful and points out that the curriculum leaders are thinking ahead.

Hopefully next summer I'll be able to report that we were well prepared for the boards.

I saw a general trend when people buy BRS, Qbanks, and FA and study for their classes that way, supplementing random material profs like from their notes. Also are lecture notes available online or otherwise or it's better to go to class? I think I will end up going to classes but it is nice to have notes so you can actually listen to the lecture instead of franticly writing or typing.

They're talking to us about it. In a month there will be some req'd Step1 pretest stuff. I personally won't start studying last yrs stuff and micro until May. Path and Pharm have NBME's, so that's 'forced' MLE studyng 🙂

So far, I'm not too worried. NBME's are supposed to correlate well (esp Phys/Path/pharm), so I'll just keep doing what I'm doing.

Do a quick search for last yr's class thread. I pretty much wrote a book on my thoughts regarding books and which to use for specific classes/finals. In general, I think you're throwing your $$ away on most req'd texts. Class notes, online resources and review type texts are fine. Seriously though, check out the old thread. I was very specific WRT books and study approach. Even though the curriculum has changed a bit, I've had good feedback. The order has changed and some stuff was cut out, the prof's tend to teach/focus on the same stuff.

Housing is easy to find here. I rent 3 br 2 y/o house for just $995/month. Plus it is only 10 min away from medical school. Lubbock is great city if you don't like commuting.

no but in all seriousness there's probably a good mix of everything. mostly are ppl who just graduated or have a masters.

then there's the old folks and married folks (no offense thackl)

then there's "reapplicants" like me... I'd rather be known as a reject though.
