Are grades now: High Pass, Pass, Fail? Any other rankings?

As far as I know high pass, pass, fail. But like I said, that would be a better question for someone else. I can only tell you the awesomeness that is El Paso. 😀

In all seriousness though, don't let them tell you that there is no difference between the three campuses. Lubbock and Amarillo will get perks that El Paso will never see, even though the major portion of the class is down there. i.e. Lubbock and Amarillo get Up To Date in the hospitals. El Paso, no nada. Its also just wonderful when we have healthnet teleconferences among the three campuses and we get to see Lubbock and Amarillo munching on these wonderful breakfasts in nice rooms and we get...nothing.

But I can live without muffins, because El Paso's clinical experience more than makes up for such minor contrivances. The campuses are all equal in regards to shelf exam grades. Amarillo may have a little more of an edge, because it seems that they take less call and are given more time to study. Personally, I was sick of reading from books and would rather be on the wards, but this should be your own decision. Only you know how you learn.

I have never felt unsafe in El Paso. The crime that occurs in El Paso is very rarely unmotivated. (i.e. random carjackings, etc.) The trauma you will see are car/motorcycle/ATV.

You guys going to spring training will be receiving an up-to-date itinerary via email either tonight or tomorrow. There should be directions included, I believe.

Our grades are H,P,F. We're the first year to have it this way. The 2nd years are still on the H,HP,P,LP,F system. I actually don't know what our system will be for 3rd/4th year. I don't think they've told us.

I just found out that I have to leave town this weekend, so unfortunately I don't get to meet any of you incoming students. But on the good side, it means my apartment will be open for the weekend. If any of you guys need a place to stay (& promise not to trash it) let me know.

Hi! I think El Paso sounds great!!! I know a little spanish, but I am not yet fully conversational...is this going to be a problem? Also, where do students typically live???

I knew absolutely NO Spanish going in (I took French in high school and Russian in college) and I survived without mishap. I won't lie. There are some situations that are truly aggravating if you aren't fluent in the language, but 95% of the time you'll have people around you who can translate for you.

The vast majority of us live on the west side of El Paso. I would suggest looking at the west side, the north central and parts of the east side. Don't go south of I-10. The west side is more affluent and nicer. Its the "nice mall, PF Changs" side of town.

Hey tater,
I'm moving to El Paso this summer. I'm looking for a house with a backyard (for my dogs). Can you suggest any neighborhoods in the area?

I'm not sure what the neighborhoods are called, per se, but most of my classmates who live in houses live on the west side. On either side of Resler Rd are numerous housing areas. My classmates who live in a house with a backyard both live off of Resler...one to the north of Redd Road and the other off of Belvidere Rd. Lemme 'splain:

Okay, I was going to try and circle some places on a street map, but this computer doesn't have "MSPaint" on it. Crazy.

1. If you google "street map of El Paso" click on the first link: "Map of El Paso,TX"
2. Click the UP navigation arrow once.
3. You will see El Paso cut in half by the Franklin Mts (in green, obviously). Where you need to be looking is on the west side of the mountains.
4. Click the "+" sign once, click the UP arrow once, and then click the LEFT arrow once. You should be seeing I-10 running north/south through the center of the screen with Resler running parallel. No one lives south of I-10 (on this map to the left of I-10).

The area my classmates live in is all the housing areas to the left and right of Resler, above and below Redd road. Of course I would suggest seeing the places for yourself before you commit to anything, but this is the best place to start from our class experience.

I do have classmates who live on the East side. It is much busier over there and much more "El Paso" than the West side. I don't believe there is much difference in safety in the East compared to the West side. Its just the older part of the city, that's all.

I lived off of Mesa in an apartment complex called The Pointe. The commute to work takes me, at most, 15 minutes. Even shorter when I'm going at 5 am...

Hey gunner, Where do you live now? I have a big dog, so I'm thinking about renting a house in Lubbock. She tolerates apartment life and is well-behaved, but I worried about apartment life tolerating her out there in Lubbock. (I think she's too big for most apartments policies.)

Summer Place apartments...there's no size limit on dogs. The backyards aren't huge, but it's nice to let my lab lay in the back while I study if she wants. Also I don't have to walk her every time she needs to use the bathroom. I think Summer Times is owned by the same people & has a similar policy.

They are both on 27th between the loop & Frankford, about 5-7 minutes from school. I have a 2 bedroom for $550 a month.

hap-

i live in tech terrace neighborhood (around indiana and 20-30th streets) and it is super dog friendly. i have two german shepherds who love our big, fenced yard plus tech terrace park which is two houses away. it's reassuring to know that my dogs can run around outside safely and happily if i have to stay at school for the whole day. ppl drive to tech terrace park to play with their dogs because it is a great, expansive place to exercise dogs away from major roads.

there are usually houses with "for rent" signs because it's so close to campus that lots of students rent for a couple of years then move. a friend also lives in tech terrace and she also has 2 big dogs. she has another park right across from her house! since there are so many new apartment complexes going up around lubbock, my hunch is that house rental prices (which are already low) are going to be even more affordable. let me know if you have any questions.

Do any of you know how many MD/PhD students are starting at Texas Tech this may? I don't want to be the only one!

Hey Mike,

At Spring Training this weekend, I met a another MD/PhD student. So, you will not be alone.

Spring Training was fun. I met a lot of cool peeps. My only complaint was that everything started so damn early. I haven't been up at 9 AM on consecutive weekend days in a long time.

I missed out on the fun 🙁

Was there a pretty good turn out?

There were about 50 people from our class plus bunch of MS1s and families. It was alot of fun and the only early wakeup I can recall is the one for breakfast on Sunday. It was a bit early and even earlier considering the time change....

If anyone on SDN is interested, there will be a group of us meeting at Snuffer's in Addison for dinner on April 15th.

Me: I have a problem. I received a letter from Tech saying that I am missing a prerequisite. This information is not correct because I took all the pre-reqs. I called Tech and they told me to call you to fix the problem.
TMDSAS: You talked to them already?
Me: Yes, like I said, they told me to call you. Yall are telling Tech that I am missing a prerequisite that I already took.
TMDSAS: So you have a deficiency report?
Me: I guess, but I shouldn’t have one. I already took the class.
TMDSAS: So you don't have a deficiency report? Then there isn't a problem
Me: Yes I have one, but it shouldn’t exist.
TMDSAS: I don’t understand.
Me: Look, I took Statistics for my Calculus requirement. You, at TMDSAS, are telling Tech that I haven’t taken a math requirement. You are telling them wrong. I took the class. Please update my school, Texas Tech.
TMDSAS: So you have a question about a course meeting a prerequisite?
Me: Yes
TMDSAS: You need to talk to someone else, Ms. XXXXX. She’s not in today. Please call back tomorrow.

I got the same letter saying that I didn't have the English credits even though I passed the AP tests. I just emailed Linda and she said they reviewed my case and accepted the AP credits.

Another approach would be to ask TTU to waive the requirement. Send an email briefly explaining the situation and ask them to waive it (to help you avoid this TMDSAS issue). I didn't take Orgo Lab and told them I didn't want to and they were ok with it.

Just out of curiousity, don't have you to be concurrently enrolled in orgo lab if you're doing an orgo?

Has anyone heard anything from financial aid? I submitted my fafsa and my internal application a while ago. I've sent them an e-mail with no response. Just wondering if anyone else had heard anything before I call them. Also, do all of the scholarships that are posted on TTUHSC web page go via their office?
Thanks,
Jen

Nope! I'm starting to think it's time to start looking. Where does everyone else sit? Any girls out there who still need a roommate? I'm a Christian and somewhat low-key and will need plenty of study breaks 👍 ! 😎 If anyone knows any other females looking for a roommate/housing, my email is [email protected] 🙂 Thanks, Lisa

It's a well known fact. So do your rain dance if you want to wakeboard this summer. 😛

I have sent out an e-mail to all spring training people who left their email addresses guiding them to this site in search of a roommate. Hopefully it will help some people with their living arrangements and will not get me in trouble for sending out unsolicited emails. 😱

What is this website? I'm still in the determining living arrangements boat and didn't go to spring training.

I think she's talking about this website - Studentdoctor.net. Thanks for sending out the email RRGirl. 👍 👍 Still it'd be nice to see some more traffic on this site.

Von (MS 2.99999) said that many ppl live alone. Guess that is an option, but it may be a good idea for sanity's sake to have a roommate...? :scared:

So, I heard from some people about a diabetic camp this summer where we would be camp counselors for kids - sounds like tons of fun! - is anyone else going to that????

If I stop procrastinating and fill out the application🙂 Anyone that has the application: At the bottom before you sign, it says that you've read the enclosed rules and regulations for the Rotary....etc. All I got was the brochure, the cover letter, and the application (not really "rules and regulations"). Did anyone out there get another sheet as well or is that it.
Just wanted to check before I sign my life away🙂
Thanks,
Jen🙂

I didn't get the rules either, but I'm in.

For those of you fretting financial aid........

TTUHSC financial aid policy is a little different, but they don't do a good job of letting everyone know about it. Aside from just completing the FAFSA, you also have to complete an institutional application:

https://www.ttuhsc.edu/FinancialAid/application/Default.aspx

Be sure that you complete this as soon as you get your award letters. (They will most likely give you this link in the email, but many miss it.)

Also, if you need more money - it's easy to get. The financial aid office has forms you can fill out for a larger award. They seem daunting - ask for proof of all these extra expenses, receipts, etc. - but in reality, you just write up at the top how much more money you want & you'll get it in 2 weeks. Just something I wish I had known about when I was starting...

overall, how are the financial aid packages? from what i've heard, not as much free money just because tuition is relatively cheap in tx.

Sorry, I've already partly filled in my application. All you have to do is call the number on the sheet they sent out: 806-743-2244 ext 261, and they'll send you everything you need.

Any of you 1st years going to Ecuador this summer?? I heard several Tech med students were going, and I'm giving it some thought......
