I prematched at TTHSC in October and thought that was it, but I was surprised with a wait list offer from Texas A&M this afternoon. I am a married non-trad student student hoping to go into some pediatric specialty.

Texas A&M
Pros
  • Very close to Houston where all of my family resides and where my husband is currently employed. This is especially important, as we hope to start a family while I'm in school.
  • Opportunity to transfer to Houston after 18 months to the Texas Medical Center. I currently work in the TMC with pre-existing connections. The Clerkship at Methodist is also very enticing.
  • Higher ranking school
Cons
  • Transfer to Houston, while likely given my husbands employment, is not guaranteed.
  • Living in such a rural area isn't ideal, as there are less opportunities for employment for my husband. My husband would likely have to work closer to Houston and commute to Bryan or possibly stay in Houston alone until I can transfer.
  • The hospital at the Bryan campus was quite a distance away from the actual campus and left a lot to be desired.
  • My impression at the interview was a little... off? I got a bit of a weird vibe. Not enough to complete put me off the school, but still a big contrast to the how I felt at the TTHSC interview.
Texas Tech
Pros
  • Hospital and school are connected for easy access to clinical opportunities
  • Really enjoyed the vibe of the school. It was my favorite interview and I felt I really got along well with the current students and felt that I would fit in more as a non-trad.
  • Low cost of living area, while still having access to many of the amenities available in a city
Cons
  • 8 Hours away from where we're currently living and my family. Our closest family would be my in laws who would be 4 hours away. We would be starting a family would no nearby support system. I'm also very close to my neices and nephews and the thought of seeing them only once or twice a year is crushing.
  • Judging by the average wage of my husbands profession in the area, he would could be taking a 20% pay cut. That is if he's even able to find a job with the current environment.
Right now, I'm leaning towards A&M, but there's still some strings drawing me back to Tech. Please help me decide!

Aggies. The school seems to be loaded with $$ and is not afraid to spend it as seen by their updated campus and future tmc location. Not to mention their match list is high quality so if you want to change your specialty into a more competitive field I think tamu would help you out a lot more. Also College Station is not really rural anymore, its a large college town that has most if not all the amenities that large cities have (except high paying lucrative jobs)
