Does anyone out there have any up to date info on Texas Tech. I am trying to decide whether to go. I am from the north east and wouldn't mind moving to Texas...but only if it's worth it. I plan on ranking about 10 programs and would probably rank it last, so I don't know if I should waste the money. But at the same time I WANT TO MATCH SOMEWHERE....ANYWHERE!!Please help ASAP....thanks in advance.

texas tech is VERY different from other texas programs..small (4 spots /year) in the middle of nowhere (lubbock). Just changed PD and chairman (old chairman still works in pain clinic). on the upside... great cost of living, no traffic, and still a good pain program if that interests you.

i would add pretty good sports teams to the list of positives, but tech just fired the best coach they ever had.

Lubbock is a dry (no ETOH and boring) town. Deal breaker.

To G0S2: Actually Lubbock is a wet county now....not that it should matter since you could always get alcohol at all of the bars/clubs/restaurants here.

Aside from being in the middle of nowhere Tech is not a bad program. Lectures are decent and improving. Work hours are not bad ~60 hours a week with 2-3 weekends off per month. It is the only level 1 trauma center in the area. You will have no problems getting your numbers. We have enough personel to staff our ORs with the goal of allowing the residents to cherrypick the best learning cases. In general Tech is a lot less malignant than many other Anesthesia programs with faculty that care about your success and happiness (within reason). Lubbock is the birthplace of Interventional Pain Management and has a very strong Pain program with a well established legacy (Racz and Raj)

Your residency salary is more than enough to live comfortably- many residents often buy homes without much fuss. The Commute is laughable- you can get almost anywhere in about 10-15 minutes which is a nice bonus after a long day. My "commute" is 10 minutes.....when all the lights are red.

If you are single the hospital has a ridiculous number of young nurses, nursing students, etc..... I really haven't seen anything quite like it and I've been to places like New York, Miami, and California. Now it is still in west Texas with all that that entails but for some it is not a bad place to be single. If that fails there are always the Tech undergrads....

My plane to Texas Tech for my med school interview had the highest percentage of hot women on it of any plane I've ever been on.
