Hi,

I finished my second year of medical school about a year ago. I am now doing my PhD and all that medical school material seems like a foggy memory now. I keep reading that BRS Path/Phys and First Aid are among the best study books. I picked up BRS Path and was quite lost. I need study material that is more textbook format. What do you recommend?

I find the Lange series in physiology perfect for me. Are there other books like these (textbook-like) for path, micro, neuroanatomy, etc.? Would the Kaplan series of books be useful for me? Should I get the robbins path textbook?

Thanks.

Hey,
I'm an IMG.I graduated 2 years ago and I have been 7 years away from basic science.Like you I don't like these table and outline based books ,so maybe I could help.
My study material is mostly kaplan lecture notes. They are written clearly and are suitable for those who have been away from basic science for some time. Physiology is especially well written, superior to BRS imo(I used brs 1st edition when I was a student along with dinosaures😀 ).It might as well be called physiology for dummies.Videos are good if you can afford the time but are not absoloutely necessary. They are repetitions of the books, mostly. They help you if you're the type that learns by listening to lectures.

Kaplan's weak on a few subjects:
1.Pathology:absolutely sucks! Instead,I used Goljan's rapid review along with his audio lectures. The book itself is in outline format but listen to his lectures and he will fill in the blanks for you.after reading each chapter I did the relevant q's from robbins' review and I scored 80-85% which is pretty well cos these are hard questions.

2.Micro:did not like it as it's mostly tables.I read MMRS which is an enjoyable reading,"text-style".It's packed with humorous mnemonics and cartoons which are helpful.Kaplan's immunology, however, reads like a story.Beware that the 2004 edition immuno is totally different from older ones.get the new one.

3.Histo:I couln't understand a thing from kaplan so I turned to HY and liked it.

After reading these once FA will start to make sense.
I haven't taken the exam yet but from the percentages that I'm getting on sample tests I think I've chosen my material well.

Good luck with the exam and your phd.May your name appear on Nature real soon🙂
