I've run a search for threads regarding the discussion of TFE....but still find myself totally lost.

I am able to either see...or at least have a method of attack for the other PAT sections...but the more I read threads or barron's method...the more lost I get.

Am I better off trying to just visualize the object (which really takes me a LONG time...while some I am not even able to do so)...or is there a method (or at least a chronological list that I can go through so that I can at least have a way of approaching each problem as opposed to just staring blankly).

Can you guys help?....I would really appreciate any and ALL help as I am really lost in this part of the PAT.

Thanks!!

Event and line counting serves only to narrow down your answer choices, and at times you tend to get to the final answer using this method alone. Visualizing the entire object may take too long. What you should do is attempting to figure out only the 3D portion that will justify a solid or a dotted line or even a sharp point at the exact position you're comparing the answer choices. I used to be reading some floor plans and that really helps on the TFE. 🙂

Hi,

Thank you for the helpful reply.

So what you are suggesting is that I first identify a difference among the answer choices then specifically try and visualize that portion of the object in order to pick between the answers....correct?

That definitely sounds like a logical approach...I am just having trouble visualizing the objects in general.....or at the very least I am taking toooo long creating a visual image.

So I take it there aren't really any specific "chronological check-list approach" to solving these problems?

Also, is it possible to just count lines on the actual DAT?

I ask because I think I've read threads where the line counting method did not ALWAYS lead to the correct answer. However, I just completed the first TFE on the Crack PAT and I was able to solve a lot of the problems using just the line counting method.

Are the TFE problems on the real DAT very different....meaning are the majority of them not solvable by counting lines?

I am just having the toughest time with this section and just trying to get some feedback....help.

Thanks guys

The line counting method should work each and every time; mechanical engineers also employ this strategy. I also thought that the line counting method didn't work for every question, but soon realized that I was approaching the questions incorrectly.

To approach these questions, I first use the line counting method and this usually narrows my answer choices down to either only one answer, or two options. If I have to choose between two options, I then try to visualize the object and imagine which of the lines would be visible/hidden. Simply trying to visualize the object in 3D and then choosing from the given answers seems to be a bit time consuming, and like most portions of the PAT, I think that elimination is the best strategy.

Thanks for your input Scuzzy. I have been practicing the line counting all day and I seemed to be getting the hang of it.

While I am hoping my timing will improve with more practice, I had a couple of questions for those who have already taken the DAT:

Are the TFE questions on the real DAT much different (harder?) than the TFE section on the Crack PAT?

If I am able to practice using the line counting method with CrackPAT, can I expect similar question (in regards to difficulty and also that the questions can be solve with the line counting method) on the real DAT?

I apologize for the lengthy post...with my test being really close, I am just a bit stressed with this section 😕

I would really appreciate the opinions, help, and/or advise.

Thanks👍

I think what you score on Crack the DAT PAT has been accurate in how you will score on the real thing. Most posts I have read mentioned it's a good way to measure how you do AND when I took the test it was right on the dot. hope that helps
