post interview...which one would you send to your interviewer? thank you cards look nicer, but i can't write much in the card. thank you letters allow me to explain throughly my interest in the school, but they don't look as nice.

Well, I think you're talking about two seperate things here. The thank you to the interviewer is one thing and a letter of interest is another. I would say send both. A thank you to the interviewer, to me, is showing gratitude for their time and quickly conveying your interest in the school. With an interest letter you generally update the adcom with current activities and a re-emphasis of your interest, in depth. You can send a thank you card to the interviewer and a letter of interest to the admin office, and perhaps send the interviewer a copy of the interest letter as an email?

i'm sticking to thank you cards....yeah, you can't write as much, but it makes it more likely that the busy faculty member will read it. say the outcome is a waitlist and it's a top choice, then i'd send a letter of intent to the school, addressed to the dean of admissions most likely, explaining in greater detail why you want to go to that school.
good luck :luck:

Good call.

At some schools the interviewer is on the ad-comm. In essence, they're your advocate in front of the snipers so perhaps befriending this person via a nice note and reaffirming your desire to attend that school would give them a better platform from which to present you. Others they just interview and write up a report.

yeah, I could never send a hallmark card. The letter is more professional and is the route I've taken.

I've found that I can get a lot in a thank you card - I just start on the inside right side and go over to the back - I've been able to fit 4 paragraphs (about 3-4 sentences per paragraph) very easily.

But yes - letter of intent post wait-list...or, better yet, send an update letter after the holidays - to strike while the iron's (relatively) hot!

I've taken to sending thank you e-mail messages. Since everything else about the application is electronic I figured what the hey. On the positive note it allows you to get it there more quickly, and they tend to respond more since clicking reply to say "Oh, you were so nice" or "I really enjoyed having the opportunity to speak with you" is easier than printing/finding your address/paying postage 😀 . On the negative it may not be as effective as having a piece of paper with your handwriting/signature.
