Thank you notes from programs

I was wondering what it means to get a thank you note from a program. Does everyone get one at some programs and no one at others? Does it mean they are interested in you particularly or just being nice? I have received them from the Baylor, UAB, and UT-Memphis programs but not from my other 3 interviews. Who has sent you one?

Yeah, I was wondering that too but a friend of mine says that common courtesy. I got a hand written postcard from one person who interviewed me - MUSC. Another typed letter that was tailored to my interview from one PD - Greenville, SC. Another letter from MCG with hand written personal comments from the chairman. Another letter from Savannah, GA program. I've also received some emails from PD in portland, maine and 3-4 emails from different residents.

I got one from CHOP, U Mich, Cinci, and a card from one of the Chiefs at the Cleveland Clinic. I also received follow-up e-mails from Rochester and U Chicago asking me if I had any further questions. They were all basically form letters, but that is what I suspected.

Received e-mails from Wake Forest and UT-Memphis, hand-written notes from UAB.

So is there any way to tell what a program thinks of you and if they will rank you highly?
