hello


i have been really bad about getting out thank you notes...i have not written one! i just think it's kind of stupid. however, imay be the stupid one for not doing it 🙂 how important is it? my idea was to interview at all of my programs and then write letters to the programs that i am most interested in. however, now i feel bad for not having sent out the thank you notes...is sending one out like a month late ok?

Ya, I think sending out late notes is okay. Particularly now as programs are really adjusting rank lists etc, I think its a good idea to get your name noticed again, and express interest in their program. Honestly, I dont really think it hurts a candidate too much NOT sending letters, but it cant hurt so...

It is actually pretty easy, generate a form letter or two, and send them to all the PD's. I would also send letters to the chairmen of the dept, and any asst PD's IF you interviewed with them. At this point, I wouldnt worry about sending to other faculty even if you interviewed with them.

Also, if youre worried about the letters seeming 'late', say something in the letter about how 'after having time to reflect on the various programs, yours is XXXXXXXX'. That makes 'late' letters sound like a calculated, thoughtful, mature etc. decision. GOOD LUCK / MATCH WELL!

Some PD's like 'em, some don't. I doubt if it really effects your ranking at many places for better or worse. It is a nice thing to do and is a professional thing to do. That being said I have not written many myself 😎
