I know its kind of a stupid question, but.....

I was wondering do you all send emails/thank you notes to everyone you interview with... or just the PDs

Also how important are they..

they sometimes feel fake to me...

they're more for your peace of mind. in the end, they play no part in programs ranking you.

thank you notes are just good etiquette, as some people say.

I've sent letters/emails to PDs and interviewers but have become somewhat lazier recently. Oh well.

I've written thank you notes to everyone. I was told that handwritten thank you notes are the best but i personally do not see people reading these as much as emails. So I think even though i sent out handwritten (ouch my hand) I will send out email to the prograsm I am most interested in in the new year or after i have finished interviewing.

I've typed them all and sent them to everyone I've interviewed with....I make sure that each one is unique, however, and try to mention something personal in each one.

I also make sure the secretaries who helped me get one!

Never underestimate the power of secretaries..... 😀

I gave all the applicants I lunched with my email address, and pre-empted the flood by saying they didn't have to send me any sort of thank you note.

They don't make a huge difference, so I'd say your best bet is to send a note somewhere closer to the end of the interview season to tell the programs you plan on ranking highly that you're still interested after the conclusion of your tour months later.

Yeah, I haven't generally written TY notes during my tour, but I do plan on writing my top programs once I've finished interviewing and know what they are. I think it's polite but kind of meaningless to write "I really loved your program because you're really good at such-and-such (which they already know!) and I'm sure I'll rank you highly just as soon as I finish looking at 10 other programs."
I have also had several PD's specifically tell me they don't care about TY notes unless you are communicating something meaningful about how you plan to rank.
