Hello,

I was wondering how much to spend on gifts for my LOR writers--or, alternatively, if people usually just give a thank you card without a gift.
Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

yeah, i just wrote them all a nice thank you email.....call me stingy, but I didn't wanna add to already huge dent in my wallet. They seemed to appreciate it 😀

...freakin' app process.

quick thank you postcard after they write the letter, and a nice thank you card after you're in somewhere. gifts? wow. can i write you a letter? 😉

I think it depends on what kind of relationship you have with your letter writers. Someone who I knew for a month or two during a med school rotation, I sent a handwritten letter on nice stationary. Some I worked more closely with, like a mentor or research advisor, I attached a note to a small gift. I aimed for about $5-10. Some things I bought included candles, gourmet coffee, chocolates.

thanks for the help

i always think its better to err on the more generous side. whatever you can afford, but make them happy.

What I'm going to do is send my LOR writers thank you letters along with a shirt of the school I plan on matriculating to. Now, just gotta figure out where I'm gonna go...

it really depends how much you had to pay to get them to write the LOR in the first place.

once i find out exactly where i am going...i am going to send them a very nice thank you card expressing how grateful i was and how their letters were invaluable in my successes into gaining an acceptance to that medical school this year.

and frame some nice pictures for them to enjoy.

You're so right - I'm going to try to keep it below $100 each for mine..!

I think a Mercedes CLK should probably do the trick. If that doesn't work, you might want to try the BMW 740il replete with sunroof and the works.

Turning off "jackass" mode and speaking seriously: I think a nice thank you card along with a modest gift (chocolates, flowers for the female professors, perhaps a tasteful tie for the male professor, etc) should probably do the trick.
