no conformation email when I was complete. i called to make sure.

edit.... how many schools did you apply to?

A lot. About 17 MD/PHD. I have a pretty unconventional research history and go to a no-name college and was not really sure how I would be received by admission committees. So I tried to mix it up with some non-MSTP programs and some MSTP. Also my AMCAS and secondary fees were paid for by my scholarship program, so if I was willing to write it, they were willing to pay it.

I'm most likely going to withdraw from several schools ( Buffalo and Rochester seem likely) pre-interview. Since I'm a native NYer applying to all the NYC schools is pretty much free for me. All I need is a metro card, same goes for Jersey. I also stuck to that general geographic region. If I had to pay for multiple plane trips and my secondary fees my list would be a lot smaller.

I'm most likely going to withdraw from several schools ( Buffalo and Rochester seem likely) pre-interview. Since I'm a native NYer applying to all the NYC schools is pretty much free for me. All I need is a metro card, same goes for Jersey. I also stuck to that general geographic region. If I had to pay for multiple plane trips and my secondary fees my list would be a lot smaller.

Rochester was at the bottom of my interest list, but it was my first interview so I went to it. I have to admit, I was very very impressed. Their medical curriculum is really awesome, and the students are unusually mellow, good people. Just one example: while sitting in the admissions office between interviews, no less than 8 different medical or md/phd students stopped independently in the waiting area, sat down with us, and talked to the applicants for 10-20 minutes about the school and other stuff. The city is sort of a drawback, but still, the school and the students seemed great. You have interviews at some great places, so I understand wanting to drop some of them.. but I thought I'd put in my two cents.

Just wondering--for the people with penn interviews--do you guys have first authorship papers?

I am a Penn MD/PhD student. I had no publications when I applied. Most of my friends who are students here did not either.

About URochester, I got into an argument with the program director over their average time to graduation: 8.5 years. The justification? "We give out real PhDs here" I wonder if it has changed any... I got rejected too! What a surprise. Oh well, I guess my Penn PhD (average of 7.5 years) won't be a real one

So I know this is going to sound silly but then again, I haven't gotten very many invites yet so I am wondering what's going on:

I was rejected by Cornell Tri-I but I've got interviews at UTSW, UTMB, Northwestern and Dartmouth. I looked up the US News Rankings and my current highest ranked school is UTSW.

The Cornell rejection letter said something along the lines of "due to the unusually large number of outstanding applicants this year, we had to be extraordinarily selective with who we invite to interview"

So I am just wondering if this "unusually large number of ..." is true or whether it's a generic rejection letter statement. If Cornell has an unusually large number of over-qualified applicants, then Harvard and UPenn would have more and I would die to go to either of those places.

I was marked complete Sept 25 and got invited Oct 6.

Any idea which interview group you picked? Like Bioengineering or Immunology? The option in which you could only pick one?

Ah ok. Apparently I heard that different groups have different interview dates... and they might not even inform you until then. then again i might be wrong.

BE is not interviewing until January, so they may not be sending out invites yet. Also, be aware that BE is more competitive in many respects than the other grad groups, and this is true for other schools as well. That being said, hang in there! I was rejected pre-interview from Hopkins, Harvard, and WashU, yet ended up at Penn.

i agree heartily with "hang in there!" it's early, and a lot can still happen. excess negativity certainly won't help you out, and it's not great for the rest of us either. go easy on yourself...

Typically only one date. For some of the larger ones they'll have two.

If you can't make it, they'll reschedule for you to either come with a different grad group or come after the interview season. They don't like doing it because it's more stress on everyone, but sometimes it's necessary and there's no hard feelings if there's a good reason.

I don't like how you had to choose a specific program at Penn.. my interests are very cross-disciplinary.

So here's the deal on that. You have to choose a graduate program when you come. That's true anywhere. At Penn they want you to choose a graduate program you're most interested in, so that when you come to interview the graduate group can put on a good show for you. At most schools, you'll come and meet a few faculty. Here, they'll typically do a little bit more for you. You get a little talk from or get to meet with the chair of the grad program and in general they put on their own little show. This couldn't happen if all the applicants for a grad program didn't get together at once.

They're only doing that to try to recruit you. They want the top applicants to be impressed with the graduate program they're choosing. In general, the graduate program does not decide who gets into the program unless they have real issues with a candidate. The MD/PhD adcoms make those decisions. The group you interview with does not bind you at all to their program. It is no big deal at all to switch graduate programs after you enter. I actually switched my graduate group twice, from Neuroscience to Bioengineering to Biophysics, though they don't like it when you switch more than once 🙂

If you really aren't sure, the best group to pick is CAMB, because they're huge. Most of the labs at the University you can work in will have ties to CAMB. That being said, don't sweat which group you choose to interview with. One of the nice things about Penn is that a professor can be in many different graduate "groups" at once. This means you can be a grad student in one department and work with a professor in just about any department, as long as you can justify the connection.
