Hey guys! I don't know if a thread has already been started for the 5/27 MCAT, though I'm pretty sure it hasn't. In any case, I'm popping my thread starting cherry with this one so hopefully I'm doing it right 🙂
I know it's still 5.5 months away, but it's never to early for anything med school related, right? 😀

...At this point, I feel like it just depends what topics the passages cover on Physical Sciences. If they're favorable to my strengths, I feel like I could pull an 11 or 12, but if I get unlucky and make a few mistakes, a 7 is definitely possible.

I totally feel the same way; I was doing fine on my AAMC's but took a TPR diagnostic and wound up with a 7 on PS, which made me freak out. But the way I figure, what they put on the test is out of our control; all we can do is study as hard as we can, and hope for the best :xf:

So far for me it's been:

AAMC 9: 11/13/12
AAMC 10: 11/14/10
AAMC 3: 10/12/11
AAMC 7: 11/11/13
TPR 6: 7/10/10 (wtf...).
I'm kinda getting concerned that there's a somewhat downward trend on scores for each section for me, and I'm really hoping that TPR one was just an outlier.

I am so nervous for the test 🙁. 3 more days.

I just hope I score around my practice tests, and not completely bomb the test.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

owen - I wouldn't worry about having lower scores on TPR - the same thing happened to me, too. After finishing the AAMC's, I am really surprised at how terribly their tests are designed; I essentially stopped taking them because I felt they were too far off to be of any help (other than for timing, I guess).

Don't worry! We're all nervous, but I'm sure you're going to do great! Just stay positive and it'll work out!! 🙂

It's really reassuring to know there are others who feel the same way! The whole test seemed so "off" compared to the AAMC's I had taken, so I wasn't too sure what to make of it, and I'm glad to hear I can kinda brush it aside. I'm pretty much going to just ignore it, and take the remaining 2 AAMC's I planned on between now and Wednesday evening and just make sure my PS is where I know it can be.

Been averaging 10s. I'm going to pull an all nighter on wednesday since most people think AAMC real thing is a bit harder these days. :scared:

No, not really, but I want to.

any retakers in the house?

I am also sh**ting my pants right now because I can't seem to get higher than what I got on the real test in september...a 29. I don't know what to do....

anyone else in this same boat? I'd hate to think the last 3 months were a waste but I don't want to score lower the second time. This sucks 🙁

i think....im going....to die. im so scared omgggg 😱! i just want this to be over so i can enjoy my summer already. the only time i've seen daylight in the last 6 days was to get the mail...it nearly blinded me 😛

Very first post!! 😀

I'm so nervous, but SO excited to be done with this test. I for one hope we get a super hard test with an even more generous curve 😛

Any takers on which section will be the ugly one? I'm excited!
I'll bet biological science. Maybe a couple of WTF ochem passages and a kidney passage. I hate the kidneys.

Is anyone else planning out their drinking schedule for Thursday night?

Can't believe how fast time flew this month...

I think verbal probably has the potential to be the ugliest on any exam.... I'm hoping PS has a lot of calculations and Bio has decent orgo.

This could be me. I am so worried about scoring lower than a 29.

What are you guys doing tomorrow (day before test)? For me I was thinking AAMC 10, a little review, and then a nice bubble bath. That really chilled me out last time.

It's weird having the exam at 1. I feel like I'm going to wake up at 9 and then just nervously pace around and/or cry until I have to drive to the testing center. Oh well after it's all over I will be drinking heavily and going to see sex and the city 2! woo hoo

Exercise, maybe a Simpsons marathon. I'm going to try my hardest not to even think about the test, probably will not be successful.

I'm definitely one of those "I'm gonna study to the last minute" folks, even though I'm sure it's a terrible idea. I know I'm so tightly wound right now I'd be unable to just put everything down, so even if I'm just mindlessly flipping through pages, that's the plan for the evening.

Good luck to everyone tomorrow!! Stay cool, and think positively; you guys are gonna do great!! And keep our fingers crossed that our test is not completely random...

Who's up for an all nighter?

Got me through college. Stick with what works, right? 😀

Here's hoping for not a "6" in verbal after reading some of those nightmares of people avging 10s on practices then getting 5's and 6's

Yikes, this is my biggest fear. I think that verbal has the biggest potential to go really badly, regardless of your practice scores.

Yeah it has been my only score that has fluctuated in my practice AAMC, normally people say if your scores fluctuate your weak in some content area, however that doesn't really seem to be plausible with verbal

If I may impart a tip for verbal (all science tips are welcome in return 😛) - pick with confidence. Read the article and scoff at it - try to find the weakness in their argument.

I go in with the sentiment, 'This article is bull****, and I'm going to find out why'. It'll help you read better and you'll score better.

That's really good advice. I'd also like to suggest that regardless of what you are reading, even if it's the driest, most boring piece of **** in the world, find some aspect of it that is interesting to you; at least for me, when I'm interested in what I'm reading, I'm able to focus on it more and pay attention to relevant details.

Any advice for how to be wide awake and focused tomorrow? When should I eat lunch, and what snacks and such would you recommend I bring?

I just don't want to be tired tomorrow! Good luck everyone!

Tired of reading how nervous and scared you all are. Its time to focus on the positives and NOT the negatives of the test tomorrow.

Ask youself these questions:

Did I study? Yes

Am I confident? Yes

Am I going to do well tomorrow? Yes

Go into the test center with a game mind set winning attitude! Its just a test. So Beat It! Overcome it! and Be Positive.

Confidence and know that no matter what you are going to try your best.
So when the proctor leaves you alone and says ok you can begin and before you click on the button to start the test. TaKE A DEEP BREATH! LAUGH TO YOURSELF and say to yourself I CAN DO THIS!
When you get the first passage for PS, dont be like WTF. DEAL with it and make it work for you. STOP, THINK, and Predict. What is this passage about?, what have I been studying from the AAMC outline that covered this? How are the concepts related? Passages can be informative, experimental, or hypothesis based. The question! what is it asking you to do and what is it saying!

By attacking the first passage with confidence like this , this will set the tone for the rest of the PS section. Be confident.

Utilize your breaks to your advantage. On the way to the test take a brief look over all the physics equations/ Concepts , this is a must. I would make a cheat sheet simplified to remind me of my weak points as well as strong points.

After PS take the break! This will give your brains a little rest so that you can transition into verbal. For verbal bring the new york times newspaper or something and read it. Maybe a paragraph or two and then you can transition into VERBAL.

For the first verbal passage you already know its going to be looooooog so dont freak out!. Read proactively and enthusiastically remember this is verbal reasoning so read like you are trying to dissect the passage and figure out the point! What is the freaking point! the theme? Compare, logic, arguments, examples, and irrelevance.
If you read the passage and the questions look foreign. Remember question types is this a retrieval, is it in the passage, strengthen weak passages, inference passages, roman numeral, etc. WHAT IS THE QUESTION ASKING FOR! WHAT IS THE QUESTION SAYING!
The section is going to be long, boring, filled with tricks and absolutist langange. READ with a vengence this always helps me!

After verbal TAKE THE BREAK! Your mind needs to relax. i know after I sit for awhile my body is like ok time to get up and walk around.

For Bio! Attack it like it stole your dignity!

OK so I hope this helps and puts the damn test into perspective.

You CAN DO THIS
You will DO This

You decide the outcome. You can go into the test center with swag or you can go into the test center nervous and silly-like which will affect your score. i mean you have been studying this long for a test! The attitude should be I going to f this test up. Got me studying all this! this is a standardized test.....Guess what guys in medical school my cuz is a MS2 and she told me the very 1st day they tell you to forget everything that you have learned! and thats the truth.

So Be enthusiastic, Be prepared. Organize your test day strategy, get your butt to the test center on time preferably a hour or at least 30 minutes prior to the test so you can focus. Think of the test like a final exam and go in and do your BEST! "k" :meanie:

This was very helpful, AliDeLaLouisa 🙂 you must've taken a Kaplan course 😉 thanks for your encouragement!!!!

Good luck tomorrow :luck:

1) Do not discuss the specifics of the MCAT exam. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Divulging one or more answer choices, parts of answer choices, or the answer itself
  • Revealing the question stem itself or a part of the question stem
  • Outlining part of the process required to solve a problem
  • Soliciting specific information about a question
  • Asking another user to Private Message (PM) you regarding a question/passage
  • Highlighting the specifics of a passage, including information not directly related to a question.
  • Posting entire questions
  • Discussing any other information that would make it easier to answer an MCAT question.
  • You may post only general information about the topics covered on the exam, "I had a passage about rickets", and your feelings, "I thought the rickets passage was very hard."
**If one of your posts is identified as revealing too much information, your account will be immediately post-held for seven days.

As a litmus test, ask yourself the following question before posting:
  • “Will what I am about to post make it easier for another member to answer an MCAT question? Will it give them a specific idea about what to expect on an exam?"
If the answer is yes, or you are unsure, do not make the post. If you absolutely must, send a private message to a moderator and ask us if it’s okay.

I hope every1 did well!!! I actually postponed this test date most likely for Jan 2011. But I am curious to see how it went 4 everyone!

After hearing everything from the other two May tests, this MCAT was surprisingly straight-forward.

PS: Fair. Not too many calculations. I spent 6 minutes on a question and eventually guessed because I couldn't justify spending any more time on it. I go on my break, and I realized my units had been backward. Including this one, I know I missed two questions on this section.

VR: Went into it flustered because of my issues with that one problem during physics. Passage one was mediocre. Passage two was the token hard passage for the section. The other passages were, again, fairly straightforward.

BS: Loved it. Biology was highly represented.

I am so angry with myself.

PS: straightforward. I ran out of time because I spent 60% of time on 20% of questions. I clicked random answers on the last page. So upset with myself.

V: Easy

BS: Ochem is by far my best subject and WTF happened to it? Genetics the worst and let's have 20 minute passages on what causes what. Aaaaargh.

I've just cost myself a whole year of sitting on my ass and have nobody to blame but my stupidity. I need to hit the science content hard.

I predict 8ps, 12v, 7bs. I was averaging 10s on aamc. I hate myself.

Well I was averaging 12's on AAMC and I predict 8P 8V 6B.... FML

I honestly felt that the exam was easier than I expected. Especially after hearing the horror stories of earlier exams....
Here is what I remember
PS:
Radioactive decay
Titration
Periodic table
electrochemistry

VR:
painting red trees
conservation bio
the 2nd one about changing opinions?? ----this was a killer

BS:
breast cancer/estrogen
immune sys
thalassemia
sugar stereochemistry
Excretion/diabetes

wow im brain dead.... Unfortunately I freaked out multiple times during the exam, which made me miss easy questions....so Im not too confident about scoring well

V: Easy

BS: Ochem is by far my best subject and WTF happened to it? Genetics the worst and let's have 20 minute passages on what causes what. Aaaaargh.

My sentiments exactly! WTH? So far, it sounds like the curve will definately be on Genetics.

Really, I think I could have done just as well if I hadn't studied at all! 😡

PS was very straightforward. 90% of questions could be answered without even looking at the passages.

Verbal = not too much different from aamc's difficulty level but is my toughest subject.

Biology = wtf. def alot harder than on the aamc tests. too much molecular bio/immuno/don't even know. never got below a 12 on aamc's but will be happy with 11 on it.

On that note, what the hell happened to Physics? I studied that crap and I had all of what 1 maybe 2 questions. MCAT sucks!

overall i felt pretty confident about this one.

PS: surprisingly straightforward.

VR: 2nd one was the hard one, but I found that the associated questions were relatively easy compared to the ambiguity of the passage. Rest of the passages were pretty straightforward. This section definitely agreed with the consensus that the real MCAT passages are longer than the AAMC practice verbals (I'd say by about a paragraph or two), but overall difficulty was right in the ballpark.

Writing: Easy topics. If you had any exposure to current events within the past month these two topics were a joke!

BS: pretty molec heavy and time consuming. Not so much genetics based as molecular biology imo. I usually finish with around 15-20 mins to check my answers on the practice exams but I ended up with around 10 minutes to double back on the real deal.

Good luck to everyone!

Question, is this exam totally scrapped after today or will they reuse it with other test dates? If so, with the scoring of those test dates affect the curve for today? If so, that really sucks since the whole exam is posted......

Remember it's really hard to predict what the curve will be. This always remains a mystery, and it seems to be a very different system to what we're used to in our science courses.

Even in sections that we think were "easy," remember that many people may not have considered it to be easy (and, there are always instances in which people can let their guard down, think they know the answer, and fall for the trap answer). So, even though someone can say a section was easy, they may end up being quite surprised at the score.

Don't despair if you're not happy with your performance. Most people aren't after taking the real MCAT, and we know that good scores are possible.

Also, the difference between an 11 and 12, or 12 and 13, is usually very, very small, since it comes down to 1 or 2 questions, and it's really hard to gauge or predict the score, since it can go either way.
