That is not a proven fact. And there is no issue. Plus amalgam is on its way out bec it is inferior to new products coming out. Some boards are even dropping the procedure and some schools don't even teach the procedure (well maybe not teach but barely use it)

It is logical to me that mercury levels are higher in dentists' blood and urine. Mercury vapor is highest when amalgams are being placed and removed. Who has amalgams being placed and removed around them all day? Us. If you want I can dig the paper(s) out that I read it in.

Here's the rub: Do dentists suffer any mercury related disease at a higher rate than the general population? No. The dose makes the toxin. Mmm. I just drank a glass of water with deadly chlorine gas in it.

Uhhhhh, You're pretty much completely wrong here. Until composite becomes moisture tolerant, it will always be inferior to amalgam in many situations. Plus it's longevity, while greatly improved, it's equal to amalgam's. Yet. No boards are dropping it. They're giving you the option of doing a class II composite instead. Not sure I'd take composite over amalgam yet due to contact issues. As for schools not teaching it and not doing it much, that's pretty much the most incorrect part of your statement. Think about the patient populations of dental schools first before you make a statement like "barely use it." We all know you're a predent, you just dont have to make is so obvious.

First of all, this is only an "issue" to quack-patients who have "issues" with everything in their life. In my experience, these are also the people who wear magnet-bracelets and don't immunize their kids. They get their "science" from Ladies Home Journal and any internet site that looks good.

The article you posted has no science...not even poor science. The references are all legal cases for crying out loud...no scientific evidence.

As far as the greater literature outside this article, you will find the main difference between the articles that support vs. refute amalgam problems is the quality of the scientific methods used. Researchers who are skilled at critically evaluating the literature generally report that the most well-performed studies tend to support the safety of amalgam.

I have no qulams whatsoever about handling or placing amalgams. They outlast composit and are not nearly as technique sensitive. At UNLV it has been my experience that because the price difference between amalgam and composite is so small, people usually opt for comps. I agree that most of the concern over amalgam in patients is just hysteria. It amazes me how many people would rather pay some quack good money to shake a fist full of feathers and incense at them than go to a real medical professional. It's like Darwinism at work.
