I've seen a few "Top Pharmacy Schools" lists from US News, and looked over all the info on AACP site, etc. But I wanted an informal survey from you guys about what you think (this is all subjective) the "top" Pharmacy Schools are. The few Iwould put on the list from what I have found so far are, in no particular order:

San Francisco
University of Kentucky
UNC Chapel Hill
Auburn
Ohio State
Purdue
U Texas, Austin
U Tennessee, Memphis
Arizona

Maybe some of the students can plug (or trash) their own schools. I'm really just curious about percieved reputation here. What do you think? Lists, please.

University of Wisconsin- Madison

In rough order:

Wisconsin
Kansas
USC
Kentucky
Ohio State
Pittsburgh
Purdue
Texas
San Francisco

Methinks those are the best.

Just about any other big state school is great, too. (Florida, UNC, West Virginia, Tennessee, Arizona, etc.)

Auburn
.

Do you have a link to the US news thingy (or any ranking list for that matter) that lists auburn in a high rank?

Auburn university in its mammoth totality is a sort of a "dukes of hazzard"-friendly environment although that domain seems to end when you walk through the pharmacy school doors.

I've heard that their pharmacy program is very well respected but i didnt think it would qualify at the tip top of the list.

its no. 25 on the list for 2006..did a search

http://www.ocm.auburn.edu/news_releases/usnewsgrad.html

I wonder how they make that list anyway

as far as i am concerned the best school is the most acceptable/pleasing school closest to your present location so you can get in state tuition and save a bundle of money

I'm not sure if I read it on this board, or on a USN&W website, but I remember the pharmacy school rankings are basically a poll from all the deans.

I heard that Hawaii has the best pharmacy school. They have even gone to great extents to put together a resourceful website:

i think that website is sexy

the TM has such bold visual authority that it sends shivers down my spine

Oooh that website is very creative. Its creative use of space and color are the very hallmark of its educational capacity. 🙄

Bleh..my favorite school is any one that will accept me. Or hogwarts.

Pharmacy school should be rated according to the quality of 4th year rotations and the students. US N&WR is a subjective poll.

The 3 years of didactic studies won't vary much from school to school. The quality of rotations will vary widely.

California schools with 30+ years of 4th year rotation experience should not be overlooked. They know how to rotate students.

Is a school considered one of the best on these polls because it is a research-based school? If so, why does that make it a better school? Doesn't that just make it a better research facility?

I think the "best" school also has something to do with personal preference about location.

that ranking thingy is nothing but garbage...nevertheless, i will list some schools: for the people living in the east, rutgers pharmacy program is incredibly tough, northeastern isn't bad, connecticut has a good program, and why can't anyone give credit or give attention to sciences in philadelphia, the first pharmacy school in the United States? pretty tough in there, too.

how can any of us rate the schools? we PERSONALLY have no experience with more than 1...
we can rate percieved toughness... most organized in interview process.... best first impression...

i could say that auburn students are not as prepared on their rotations as we are.... i have done rotations with auburn students... but perhaps they are just idiots... i mean we have those in our class too.
i have no way of knowing which school, out of the ones i have been exposed to via other students, is the best.

moral: pick your school because you want to go there

But as a preceptor for various different schools and seeing the quality of students and the rotations for years, you do get a sense of different school's program.

an auburn student? not prepared?

chances of that are 1 in a million 😛 ***

*** actual chances may be much**** higher

**** much much much

That's exactly what I was after. This is all totally subjective. We all have ideas about what schools are "good" schools and what schools are not as good... My reasons would be different from yours, as yours would be different from someone elses... It's really just 'impressions' that I was after. Just curious, really. I know there's no real science to it, I was simply interested in which schools were percieved as "good" by people who know something about them (Pharm students, Prepharm students, Pharmacists and whoever else reads this forum...). Sometimes there is a good reason for a school to be percieved as a "good" or "tough" school, and sometimes it's probably 'reputation' without substance. I just wondered what people here thought were "good" or "tough" schools, whatever the reasons. I just think it's an interesting topic. I agree with your moral, BTW.

good...

my school is the prettiest
vote for me!

is there a rivalry between samford and auburn?

The best school rankings are completely subjective.
The reasons I chose Midwestern over Mecer (The schools I was accepted at):
3 years Vs 4
Cost (even though tuition / year is higher here, it would have been the same over 4 years)
Theological viewpoints (yeah for non-denominational private schools)
Accent
Location
etc, etc.

Each employer looks for different things from prospective canidates. A clinical pharmacists should probably be associated with a research institution. A school that focuses on retail may graduate better retail pharmacists.

But in the end, all they look for is that license anyways...

I say UCSD takes in the brightest students. I don't believe in these rankings. Just use them as tier setters.
