Rather than repeat a rather lengthy thread, we had a long one going about this topic (moving from West Coast to East Coast rather) last year around school starting time (ie, June).
I believe it was in the Allopathic Forum but perhaps someone can be helpful enough to dredge up the thread. I'm sure it will provide some useful advice (especially the part about bargaining and playing the companies against each other).

First of all, congratulations on making the wise decision of moving from NY to CA (The Center of the Universe). 🙂 I would strongly recommend that you sell as many items as you can. The cost to move an item might be more than the cost of the item itself. A move from the East Coast to the West Coast or vice versa is very expensive. I am still disgusted by how much money I spent on my move. I have a few recommendations on who to use to transport your car. This company is pretty inexpensive, but you get what you pay for:

I used this company to transport my wife's Acura and they did an okay job.

If you're really not that obsessive about the transport of your car, you can also have the moving company ship your car and furniture at the same time. I didn't realize this option was available at the time and I think it would've saved me some money and aggravation (my furniture arrived before my car did). Good luck.

I'm moving to Atlanta from NYC for residency and I have some stuff I need to move but not that much (a bed, TV, clothes, shoes, etc.-no real furniture). Do any of you know of a reasonably priced moving company that's dependable?
By the way, since we're actually making a salary this year, all of our moving expenses are tax deductible if the move is over 50 miles.

The other piece of advice I got from my tax-person was write off the whole moving experience in your taxes and ultimately you recover the majority of your expenses so don't take that lowest quote from a mover you don't like.
