The Bigger Picture or All Numbers?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
First of all, I'm not positive about "WF", but W's don't count as 0. There might be a different rule about your specific school's system and "WF's", but in general, W doesn't count as 0...just W.

This is the truth:

1. You sound a little neurotic. Welcome to the real world.
2. There is a conflict in your story about how you got the grade..was it the registrar's fault, or your prof? If the registrar made a mistake you can appeal the grade w/ your prof's help and they will change the transcript. If you truly were not failing, they should change it and I wouldn't take no for an answer.
3. Each school receives thousands of applications. It's a numbers game, and anyone who says it won't affect you is lying. That said, they do look at your individual grades and look for progress and the types of classes you took, so you're certainly better off than another "3.69" applicant who consistently earned 3.69 grades...but you wouldn't be the same as a 3.8-3.9 applicant, either.

Anyway, there are lots of people who messed up early in college and had to spend half a decade earning a 4.0 (not a 3.8ish, but a 4.0) to recover from it. I'm one of them. We don't do as well as the people who came straight out of h.s. with a 4.0...for some reason. That's life. Man up.

So the prof was gay and you told him he'd burn in hell?

wow.

i would say at this point, there is no point in appealing if you've already submitted AMCAS. on the secondaries, when schools ask if you have any other information, explain the WF. but for the love of god, don't explain it the way you have here or they're going to throw your app away. be concise and do not make excuses. the rest of your transcript will for sure make that one blip seem like a very, very small deal.

EDIT: so maybe you didn't submit AMCAS already? in that case this seems like an issue to be resolved with your school. which means we probably can't help.

I understand your concern, you didn't think withdrawing would have such dire consequences...

Anyway, from my experience, MCAT represents more than 50% of your eligibility, so if you just do really well on that, it doesn't matter.

Wait. You said you talked to your adviser. Did you ever actually ask the professor about it? That is really what you should do first in this kind of a situation.

Also are you sure that the WF is supposed to be reflective of your performance. I know that a lot of schools have a deadline that you have to withdraw by and if you withdraw after that deadline you get a WF.

thanks for the feedback. If I do end up having to explain this on my app (next year)- I will for sure be more succinct and less emotionally descriptive.

you know- I never did talk to the prof about it. I assumed that he understood the policy WF=student is failing the class up to this point in time. Given that we had a hostile relationship throughout the semester, I assumed that 1) it was intentional 2) he would put up a fight 3) students always lose these types of fights 4) it wouldn't matter anyways because it didn't impact my GPA/overall academic performance in any way.

There is a slight chance that because this is a new policy at my school (which I just learned yesterday) - we used to only have Ws with no additional classifications until very recently-that he might not know how to view a WF-and might be considering it to be a student who drops late in the course-however, I do strongly doubt it (although it would be amazing if this explains it) because he seems pretty on top of these sorts of thing. I am planning on speaking with him in person when I go back to university. I am currently not in the United States but when I am back at school this is one of the first things I am going to try to resolve.

Highlighted in bold is your main problem; in doing so, you gave up a fight before there was even one to begin with.

Just drop your professor an email. Act courteous, and make it concise. Ask him if he was aware that the registrar entered a WF. If he replies yes, then simply state that you were not failing the course, and a WF is simply inaccurate.

You have nothing to lose from doing this, and much to gain. Please do it. I look forward to seeing how this resolves.

I'm worried you didn't write enough for us to get a snapshot of your situation....My eyes glazed over when I saw all of that.
