We just had a guy from the NBOME come talk to our class. He informed us that SDN is the biggest source of misinformation you could find. Just thought you should know...

That's funny that they would single out an online forum.

I would agree there is a lot of misinformation that gets passed around here, but there are also a lot of people on here that correct that misinformation and provide accurate information.

Best thing to remember is that this is an Online Forum and not everything posted on here is going to correct.

lol there's misinformation everywhere..... compared to most online forums SDN is probably not that bad - they gave me way better admissions counseling than my premed adviser did, tho I can see 100% why he said that

SDN should incoperate a like button somewhere. 👍

I forget whose quote this is, but to paraphrase it, "SDN is like a box of chocolates with a cobra in it. You've got to really want that chocolate."

I think a lot of the worst stuff is in the Pre-allo and pre-osteo sections, where every other thread seems to turn into a flame war. The further you get from there, the less jerk-tastic things get, for the most part.

I will say, I think there's better advice on here about applying to residencies and if/when it makes sense to take the USMLE (for osteo students) than I've heard from my school's administration, though. (A classmate asked our assistant dean for academic affairs the question "Why have upperclassman taken the USMLE?" at an admin hour, to which the dean replied something to the effect of, "Many had family members who are MD's who wanted them to take it.")

I could see why it would tick off somebody from the NBOME that DO students still take the USMLE (as much advice on SDN recommends), but the fact is that doing the right thing for the NBOME's goal of getting COMLEX to be seen as 100% on par with the USMLE doesn't necessarily line up with an individual DO student's goal of getting the residency he/she wants.

Anyway, that would be my guess about the main reason somebody from the NBOME would tell people to stay away from SDN.

Edit: Original "box of cobras" quote here, from the SGU vs DO thread:

Anyone who works for NBOME is not a reliable source. I'd say the AOA and the NBOME are the suppliers of far more misinformation than SDN.

Overall all forums are loaded with crap. You have to be patient enough to sift thought the heaps of crap to find the hidden nuggets of wisdom.
