By that I mean the opportunity for only DOs to enter into DO residencies. The following are links to residencies only for DOs...

http://www.westernu.edu/OPTI-West/arrowhead.htm
10 Ob/gyn spots, 24 FP spots, 4 Orthopaedic spots, 5 neurosugery spots, and 8 general surgery spots.

7 derm spots

http://www.westernu.edu/OPTI-West/riverside.htm
12 anesthesiology spots, 4 Orthopaedic spots, 5 neurosurgery spots

There are more hospitals with FP, IM, and sports medicine spots here:

On a side note, most of the DOs heading these CA programs came from COMP. What does that say for COMP graduates? You decide.

I'm so excited about COMP now. Even though I want to go into primary care, it's nice to keep options open. :D

No they're for all DO students. COMP students during their 3rd and 4th years can rotate at these hospitals to get their name known. This may give them an advantage in the process not to mention the heads of the program who are DOs are affiliated or came from COMP.

I am sure there are other DO schools with hospitals around them that have mostly their DO students taking those residencies. Also, if DO students from other schools could rotate at these hospitals I'm sure that would help them get their name out.

Is this very rare that there is a unfilled neuro-surgery spot?
That's true. You have to remember there are only about 2,000 DO grads compared to 16,000 MD grads in the US. Also remember that about 50% or 1000 DO students go the allopathic route for residency. In addition, the 1000 DOs remaining that actually match into the DO residencies may not all rush to neurosurgery. Maybe this accounts for the unfilled spot but I'm not sure.

I am not familiar with any of the match process that goes down. But does that mean that any everage applicant could get this spot? Or say like someone who is just a little lower then the usual nuero-surgery applicant should be able to get the spot?

No, it is possible that the hospital could not find aan acceptable candidate and opted instead to not take on an additional less qualified resident.

Exactly.

Rather have no neurosurgeon than an underqualififed one.

Also, many neurosurg residencies drop a resident somewhere along the process, so they may start with 5, but end up with 4. In this case they are starting with 4 so maybe they wont drop one...or someone will enter in as PGY-2.
