The externship question

So what's the opinion on anesthesia externships?

I'm planning on applying to a few big-name programs (JHU, B&W, UCSD), but I'm completely in the dark as to the externship issue. It is wise to do a one-month rotation at one of these programs?

For any 4th years reading this thread, what was your reasoning behind doing one or not doing one--specifically when it came to a big-name program?

For any current/former residents (Tenesma, residentphysician, etc.), have you found that applicants to your program are better off by doing a rotation at your program.

Definitely yes. Sometimes, I worry that we have taken a resident or two just for that reason, so it definitely helps to have been seen by the program you might want to go to.
