Hey everybody.
I've just moved to the USA.I finished a medical school in Russia. And I'm trying to prepare for USMLE 1. I lost .I don't know how to begin.I'm not sure it's enough just read the book.
Maybe somebody has a good advice for beginners......Thanks a lot. 🙂

I guess the best place to start would be to pick up a copy of "First Aid for the USMLE Step I" and cover in detail all the topics presented.

hello, the answer to this question depends on a few things, like are you a recent graduate? how many years away from you from basic science training? let me know and i'll try to recommend you some books + tips. i haven't taken the test yet (this summer) but i have learned a bit about how foreign grads study for this test.

hey there.Thanks for you help.
I finished a medical school two years ago.I got a residency in Pediatrics. i had a good score at the medical school..I have some clinical experence ...I used to work at the Emergency Department in Russia.Since my 4th grade of medical school.
I have a lot of questions because I tried to study with First Aid.....and i didn't know how to use it, as some information isn't present in any particular order(for example Anatomy)...so Maybe I need more than First Aid.

And one more question.....Is it important to be a volunteer at the Hospital???
Because I heard a lot of advises about this.
Thanks a lot again.
I'm very apriciate your help.

I have similar questions (I'm M1)...So far, all I'm doing is trying to annotate 1st aid as I go through topics, my hope being that then, when I start my in-depth review, everything will be in more or less one place. The difficulty with this is trying to figure out what details to add to 1st aid, since it seems pretty darn complete already. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

First Aid is definitely a good start. You should also consider a prep course and some kind of question bank. Qbank is the best choice but there are other options out there that may be adequate and cheaper. The most important thing is research. Gather all the tid bits of information from 3rd years and this forum and then devise your own plan of attack. If you're reading this in December or early January you are already headed in the right direction.

qbank? isn't that just a bank full of usmle questions

i don't see how one can start off with that.. without knowin' any material.
unless they break the question banks up by categories and we can take each category along with the specific class .. i dunno ?

hmm ..

If you got an older version of First Aid (i.e. 2005 or earlier), it is subject based. The later versions are organ based.

They have subject specific texts as well. For Path- Rapid Review or BRS are usually recommended. BRS for Physio. Lippincott for Pharm. Micro Made Ridiculously easy for micro. High Yield for Cell bio, immunology and embryology. BRS for Behavioral Med and Anatomy.

Most of us also are planning to use Kaplan's Qbank and/or USMLE World or USMLERx.

Good luck!!!

You can break it up by subject and/or organ system. The learning comes from reading the answers and reviewing the questions in connection with First Aid and other supplemental materials.

i see.

which brings me to another question ( pardon my ignorance )

isn't the qbank a subscription service for 1 month or 3 months..

so how is it possible to break it up by subject & still follow it along with your classes for the duration of a semester .. roughly 4 months. ( ? )

It is usually a 1 or 3 month subscription, but Kaplan offers "specials" for 6 or 9 month subscriptions. At my school, they were offering a 9 month subscription for $399 if you purchased it before the end of December. If you use it along with your regular coursework, its not a bad deal, but if you end up only using it when you get closer to test prep, they just conned you into spending more money than you needed to (1 month subscription - $199, 3 month - $279).
