What are the five states that won't let you practice as a DO if you didn't go through a DO residency? What's the reason for this anyway?

At one time everyone (MD and DO) had to do the internship year. Now most just do it as year 1 of their residency. These states Osteopathic medical boards have decided to keep the internship year. Probablybecause of tradition. You can apply for approval of your non-AOA residency and supposedly 90% get approved.

To work in these 5 states, you don't have to go thru a DO residency, but rather a 1-year DO internship prior to your residency.

👍 A 1-year DO internship isn't so bad, and even so, the 90% isn't bad odds. They're better odds than getting into med school itself.

But who would want to go through that again :scared:

You can get the first year of your ACGME residency approved, and thus would not need to go through it again.
