The future of Gas

I am very interested in gas, but I always hear that the income from gas will decrease like it did in the 80's. I am wondering was the decrease felt in all areas of the market especially rural areas? Did the number of surgeries fall or what? Most anesthesiologist get paid by the hospital and bill the patient right?
