I am not a recruiter but wanted y'all to be aware of what the national guard haves to offer. As soon as you are accepted to dental school you can direct commission ( meaning no basic training) you become a 2nd LT. while you are in school you will get active-duty pay for 3 years . 48000 dollars a year to include bha full health insurance for your whole family and money for travel. How it works is you comment to a 6 year contract .... 4 years in dental school and 2 when you get out. While in school you only drill once every quarter.... After you graduate You are only obligated to drill one weekend a month 2 weeks a year and get payed a little over 1000 dollars a drill . Not a bad deal!!! It does not pay for school but it does pay you to go. And after your 6 years you can reenlist for 3 years and get a 75000 dollar bones. I have been in the national guard for 4 years and its not a big commitment at all. It's a great deal and not alot of people Know about it. look into it ! It can make a world of difference !

Are you a reserve or active duty for the 2 years when you get out? Can anyone confirm this, that you only have a 2 year commitment after DS? Sounds interesting if this is all correct!

You start your commitment in dental school .... 4 years of school 2 years after . You are on reserve orders for the national guard of your chocie state

Be suspicious. Many recruiters are turds who won't provide all the info to paint a rosy picture. Something smells fishy here how a recruiter would post in this subforum and not in the military dentistry subforum. :caution:

Well I am not a recruiter !!! And I agree with you about recruiter being misleading ... Look into it your self I just wanted to inform y'all that there are other options for paying for dental school . I get that the military is not for everyone . But for the few it is for it's nice to know what's out there . I can't tell you every deal to the program but I can help get you in contact with an officer strength manager in your state that can !

Are you sure this still exists? I looked on the National Guard Website and couldn't find this program listed anywhere. The only one I found was something that paid about 25k a year but required a year of service for every 6 months of stipends (ie 8 years of service if you get it through all of school). A quick SDN search revealed some threads from a few years ago discussing a similar program but saying that it was cancelled.

It exists ... it is not on the web . You have to go through an officer strenght manager from your state . Trust me it is out there . I will try and get more information about.

Cool, any information you can find would be appreciated. I am very interested in the program as you originally described.

Yea if it's anything like what I read about in other threads it sounds amazing. Especially if you don't want the commitment of the military scholarships. Keep us posted.

Find an officer strength manager in your state that knows what he is talking about. There is money there for it!!! All it is, is ados orders .... Which is an active duty position for three years . It's put there you just have to talk to the right people

These programs do exist!! My cousin is actually doing a very similar thing for PA school. The thing is, that the National Guard is run by the state government you live in and not by the federal government. The National Guard is different from the Reserves, which is run by the feds. Most times, the National Guard is used as a "state police" in times of emergency and rarely gets deployed overseas. So the National Guard, since there is different funding, can often offer different deals. The National Guard isn't exactly universally organized, so you probably won't find specific programs on the web. If this is something that interests you, it will probably very by state, so check it out. There is also the AF national guard.

I am also very interested in a program like this. I am extremely new to this whole idea of enlisting into a commisioned corps and have never really thought of the chance of me joining, however with all of the research I've been doing over the past few months regarding finances (and potential OOS/private tuition) all venues need to be researched. I would like to join some sort of corps (be it the natinal guard, army, etc) however I know that the Army, Navy, AF scholarships and programs do require active duty, which is not something that I would be able to do (I'm not the biggest guy, and running a 5K the other day was tortuous 🙁)

Now when "drills" are mentioned, what exactly does that mean in regards to the National guard??

Also, for those of us who are again new to this whole concept, please extend out all acronyms so we have an idea of what to search for outside of what is stated here. Thanks!!

On the army's dental corps website they also list an option called the "early commisioning program". Anyone have any info about this? It's pretty vague on the site, but I think it could be a good option for a less expensive school if I don't get the HPSP done in time.

It's not a scholarship ... It's a program google ASR national guard
http://www.koojo.net/random/arngmed.pdf
Gives an outline ... You would contact a national guard officer recruiter to get started

BE ADVISED - ASR PRPGRAM IS NOT AROUND ANYMORE...

CURRENT GUARD AND RESERVE PROGRAMS ARE:

  • MDSSP WITH OPTION TO STRAP
  • DIRECT COMMISSION WITH ONLY DRILL + ANNUAL TRAINING PAY.
FYI= DRILL PAY FOR A 2LT IS NOT AROUND $1000 ... is around $380 for a brand new officer.

Forgive my CAPS , dont care about internet etiquite...

I am currently in the National Guard...
