So here's a ticklish question: Do you guys know of schools that are traditionally stringent in their interview invites, such that "The hardest part is getting the interview", and then afterwards - the majority of the people interviewed will receive offers? Do any schools come to mind?

I heard UoP is like this.
Also the dean of admissions at Nova said the exact same thing at my interview. He said that roughly 400 people out of 4000 applicants get interviews. But only 100ish get in out of those 400.

UIC D1s and D2s said about 60% of all interviewees get offers there. I also read Columbia is not interviewing as many as in the past.

Yes, that description pretty much defines Tufts. They even tell you in the interview that you've got a 70-80% chance of being accepted from that point on. 👍

I feel like for most schools at WORST you have a 1 in 5, 1 in 4 type chance from the interview on. Most are probably more like 1 in 3. This is good considering to get to the interview its usually more like 1 in 10. For example, Marquette interviewed 100 in state people for 40 spots, and you can count on at least a couple turning down and acceptance... thats almost 50/50.

This is kind of inaccurate. While it is true that Nova's class size ranges from 110-115 and they do only interview about 400 applicants, they extend more acceptances than listed above. Of the initial acceptances handed out, they probably recieve 70 or so deposits (and some of those may back out later) and they must give more acceptances to compensate. The waitlist moves fairly well at Nova because it is private and a relatively expensive program.

I just want to clarify that I really like Nova and this is not meant to be an attack, just what I was told.

That's not exactly true of NOVA. The way it was explained at my interview was this, they accept a great deal of interviewees because students are waitlisted and come off when others deny acceptance.

100/400 would assume that EVERY one of those students accepts Nova. Nova's class size is 120 ish (with some international students in third year).

That's how it was explained to me. I actually heard that if you interview at Nova you have a really good chance of getting in. I'm sure it changes year to year.

Oops, I was thinking only initial acceptances. Both of you are right.

I heard that UDM takes your measurements for your lab coat at the interview... fact or fiction?

so you can get measured up, and then rejected? why would they measure you then? lol

I heard that UCLA does the measurement thing, too. Not sure if that's correct though, just hearsay.

ASDOH also does the measuring of white coat because the white coat ceremony is on the first day of school.

To answer the OP's question, it's not true for ASDOH. According to this power point presentation( http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...wWFG4S695rsuxdVdQ&sig2=xnTfgjCvsGAAI45x_ta_lQ) 99 people got accepted to ASDOH when 422 were interviewed. That gives you a 1 in 4 chance for that year to get into ASDOH.

does this mean acceptance rate is high for UDM once you secured an interview?

otherwise, it seems kind of cruel to give someone such hope and then later reject them.. why would you want to make the person think you could be wearing this nice white coat but we dont think you're good enough so bam rejection!

ohh, they dont just measure you...they also ask you how exactly do you want your name written on your coat!

This might be a case of exaggerating the bragging rights. For the entering class of 2008 total number interviewed was 486, total accepted was 333 to make a class of ~ 175.

Or one could suggest that it took 422 interviews to get a class of 99 simply because not all of those accepted ultimately chose ASDOH.

WOW, I didn't know they did this as well. Isn't this being too forward? Isn't it a dead giveaway?

Whats a giveaway? There is no reason for them to do this, they do it to every interviewee

I apparently have the worst luck in the world. I interviewed at Tufts in october. Seemed like it went well. Then about a month later, they said they were placing my application on "hold" and wanted a second interview. I figured they just wanted to test my interest or something. Im from Delaware so a put out more money to visit for a 45min interview. Again, I thought it went fine. No tough questions, conversational, etc.

Jan 15...Application Denied...😱...had i been accepted i was pretty much sold and planning on going.

Life goes on, Im in at Temple, and waiting on UMDNJ, Maryland, and Case.

My experience, interview does not mean accepted lol

wow... that just... sucks...

if you don't mind, tell us more about the interview i want to know what happened! that's nuts...

Check out ASDOHs class size

The numbers used in the post refer to those found in the presentation by Wayne Cottam. Whether the class size is 99 or 68 does not change the premise of the post.

First interview Oct 30th: I was with a 2nd year orthodontic student and a 4th year dmd student. They asked pretty normal straightforward questions like why dentistry, hobbies, strengths, weaknesses. It was mostly conversational. I answered honestly and professionally. I really thought it went well. Another kid said he got grilled that day so I felt good. Anyway apparently something was off so they said to come for a second interview.

Second interview Dec 7th: I had gotten into temple, but I really liked Tufts so I went back. This time I didn't do a tour or anything, I just interviewed with an oral pathologist there. He asked the same questions, and we chatted for a bit and had some stuff in common (he met his wife in high school band, and thats where I met my fiance...yea ive heard the jokes "this one time at band camp...")

Anyway, I felt really good about it but sure enough got rejected last friday. Still kinda reeling from it. Idk what happened. $h*t happens i guess...somebody didnt like me there lol.

Your first "interview" was more like an initial screening than an interview. What self respecting ds would use a 4th year student and a 2nd year resident to make some pretty far reaching decision? A good interviewer will make you feel that you are definitely their best candidate until you get your the Dear John/Jane letter.

yea i found that weird and thought that may have been the reason for the 2nd interview.
