what's goin' on metallica? I've been meaning to say it for awhile, but I'm not a big Metallica fan but I can't get enough of my three favorites: Fade to Black, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and One.

...especially the first couple minutes of Fade to Black, awesome awesome stuff.

hahaha no it's about the boxer Jake LaMotta. It's a Scorsese film and has Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro in it. Generally considered to be both Scorsese's and DeNiro's best film.

hahaha I just like the main riff a lot. I do find it moderately annoying that it sounds extremely slowed down, almost artificially, though I've read that they actually sped the recording up on the album. Yikes. lol

As much as it makes me sound like a technical music snob, there's just not enough going on in that song for me to be interested and the rest of it just doesn't do it for me.

Fade to Black and One are two of my favorites, though. You should check out the Unforgiven 1-3 songs, you might like those if you like FtB and One.

Speaking of music, I want to teach myself to play the guitar. I thought about taking a class on this, but that would mean HW...and just work in general so it was a no go. I tried teaching myself a couple of years ago, learned like 2 chords, and then gave up. Any tips for success this time?

As much as it makes me sound like a technical music snob, there's just not enough going on in that song for me to be interested and the rest of it just doesn't do it for me.

He's a good guitarist, but his voice is horrible and he's kind of a douchebag. Have you ever heard Mechanix? It's a sped-up version of the Four Horsemen (a Metallica song where Mustaine still had rights to the music) that Mustaine rewrote the lyrics into a mechanic having sex at his shop. Pretty funny.

Carve out 30 minutes of your day to learn the chords and stuff. You just have to devote yourself to it and not give up. That's the main problem with most people who try to teach themselves.

I actually used to like Blink 182 and still sometimes laugh when I hear their songs and jokes. It's all very 5th and 6th grade, though.

Metallica's a much more experienced guitarist than I, but from my experience, I think the best thing you can do is absolutely nail the fundamentals. Start with proper technique, knowing the scales, and learning the theory behind it all. It seems very tedious and unproductive, but in the end, you'll be a MUCH better player because of it and a ton more versatile and able to "jam out" instead of playing covers and not being able to improv with a group.

I actually lack in some of these fundamentals but don't have the time and patience to go back and fix it. I also don't play with other people a lot anymore, so the drive to learn extra stuff isn't there anymore. When we do play it's covers and our own songs.

I feel this way about an electric drum set. I need one first before I can really start learning.

Plus, wouldn't drums be a great stress-reliever? Have a bad day, just go home and take your frustration out with some high-intensity beats.

But why I'm really posting here: DON'T YOU HATE IT when you're in the library really late and there are PLENTY of computers open, and the one other person in the whole library chooses to sit by YOU, in your secluded corner that you picked out especially so no one would see that you're on SDN?? And then, the person who sat by you is being really annoying (i.e. watching television via the internet and having their sound really loud to where you can hear what they are listening to through their earbuds). 😡

I don't think I've ever been in the library when there are many free computers open. It's always packed! But then again, I don't stick around till 2. I do, however, hate when people do that with tables. PLENTY of spacious tables and they have to sit at mine munching on chips or something when I haven't eaten for hours.
