The Late Night Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would ALMOST prefer to write long papers than have to keep giving lab presentations to my insane and impossible to satisfy PI.

I love lab presentations. time to show off 😉 and actually talk to people about science. I have incredibly talented lab mates, mostly MD/PhDs already or in progress, so their advice and prospective on my research often really helps to see things in a new light.
And I luv my PI :luck: Demanding, but that's how you get things done!

Well lately I have been working on a few DVTs, and after cramming path for 10 hrs I think I am developing early onset alzheimers. It's really a race to see which one kills me first.

I don't mind weird people so much either. But not for any good reason, mostly because it is interesting to be around them. You never know what kind of exotic or inappropriate and awkward thing is going to be said!

I can't study for 10 h straight. It would just fry my brain...I take brakes often. Works for me so far.
As to weird people, I guess I am weird too. I like to say strange things or do strange things just because I feel like it. Too bad in my class I feel pressure to be "normal"...like anyone can be normal at this stage in med school.

Violet I think I am falling in love with you. haha

I'm going to bed... big exciting day tomorrow, and I am on call fml. Gnight!

Another med student syndrome: falling in love with a stranger on SDN just because you've been so asocial and lonely for the past X weeks cramming the stupid path... 😛

Good luck with your call! Nite! 🙂

the hospital is dead tonight, I'm bored out of my mind, I even took an ekg of myself just to pass time.

Now I am up early to study for my chem lab practical.

Gettin' my gen chem dos on a la electrochem (which isn't half bad actually)

Yuck. I had such a hard time figuring electrochemistry out. I could never remember whether oxidation was gaining/losing electrons and which happened at the cathode/anode of a galvanic/electrolytic cell. Good luck with that!

OIL RIG. 😀 Oxidation Is Loss. Reduction Is Gain. or if that acronym doesn't float your boat you can use LEO the lion goes GER. Loss of Electrons Oxidation; Gain of Electrons Reduction.

The anode is the oxidation side and the cathode is the reduction side. Electrons flow via a salt bridge from the anode to the cathode.

Even if you don't know what will be the cathode or anode by looking up their respective EMFs (which is cell potential, measure in Volts (V) and EMF stands for Electromotive Force). You will be able to tell if you get a positive reading or not if you have made your galvanic cell correctly.

Like I said I actually enjoy this part of chemistry.😎

bored at work and ran across this, and now i want it, what do you guys think:

Looks awesome. Now I want it too. I suppose I would have to get an iPhone first though...

Haha yeah, once I learned OIL RIG and An Ox, Red Cat things got a lot easier for me. Eventually, electrochemistry became one of my favorite topics. One of the old lecture halls we had chem lectures in had huge boards with the periodic table and potentials for half reactions on them. The only problem was that they were so old, the periodic table was only complete through maybe 111, and the half reaction potentials were all listed as oxidation potentials (whereas pretty much all tabulated data for half reactions is now presented as a reduction potential). I, being the nerd I am, found this very amusing. Not too many other people did, unfortunately.

i can't wait for school next year so I can look forward to fridays all over again! cuz as of right now friday is just another day!

 being a tele tech I've always really wanted to hook myself up while working. especially considering the ridiculous amount of caffeine that I drink on any given shift. I've always wondered if I have PVCs, PACs or an Arrhythmia. Never had an EKG done though and I think they'd frown upon me hooking myself up to one of our tele's lol

Is it time for this topic already? I clearly need to start keeping track of time.

I have a bit of spare time that I think I'll use to read Catch-22. I created a list of books I want to finish reading by the end of the semester. So far, not much progress has been made T_T

You should totally do it! tell them you're having chest pain! I seriously think I have elevated T waves, haha!

 if I told them I was having CP they'd try to admit me. No thanks lol How elevated are they? I rarely worry about elevated T in my patients. Clearly you aren't having a heart attack. Could be high potassium or it could just be normal for you. From what I understand, chronic high BP also causes it so I'm sure I have elevated Ts. Unless they are larger than your QRS or close to it I'd probably ignore it since you are otherwise healthy.

I've seen so many awkward rhythms at this point that if my patients are asymptomatic we look at most PVCs, no matter how frequent, and arrhthmias as signs of aging. I only get really concerned when I start seeing what looks like a 2nd degree type II or 3rd degree block or new onset afib. Sometimes some long pauses I get concerned about too. Then again most of my patient population is 80+ years old.

Where are all my fellow late nighters! I'm bored out of my mind over here. Entertain me! lol

i've been awake since 5AM (EST)...i want sleep!!!!

i had to work my 8 hr. job during the day and i have my 12 hr. job tonight...

how are you DbDan?

Ouch, i've had those days before... they suck.

I'm good. At my 12hr job currently. Work a strange schedule this week though. Overnight Friday, Sunday, Tuesday, Friday... wreak's havoc on my sleep cycle.

Whats worse is I've got my 2nd job that may call me in this week for a patient and I'd work mid-day Monday, Wed, Thurs, Sat lol

Hello all. How is everyone's night going?

100% this. i don't even know if I can consider the way I sleep as a "cycle". there is no pattern. fortunately, i'm off Tuesday and I'll try to catch up on some zzzzz's

Am up here in California writing a mega-procrastinated proposal for a class. yuck. Luckily, life is always better with Starbucks in hand 🙂

i think i have insomnia. why am i reading entire SDN threads at 1 am? 😕

LOL, Trust me I read SDN from 7pm to 7am six days a week! its a sick addiction!

morning all, hope everyone is having a good morning, it's 2:00 am, about to start some physics some work but I am just so tired.

Trooping along, but am so distracted by SDN and "new" facebook. btw, opinions on the new layout. anyone?

I think I haven't logged into facebook through my laptop in like a month, I only do it through the iphone app. Whats new with the new layout?

The "What I've learned from my patients" thread in the Emergency Medicine forum kept me distracted for DAYS at work. It was awesome. Unfortunately now I've read all 60 pages lol

New facebook 😱 I just got an iPhone so I use the app and haven't seen it yet. The hospital has it on their list of monitored sites so I don't go anywhere near it on a work computer.

Yeah I've read through the "what I've learned from my patients" , the "worst interview answers" , the "Bizarre interview moments", and "what did you do when you found out you are accepted" and now I have nothing to read, any suggestions?

omg love what did you do when you found out! hasn't really been updated though. bizarre interview moments are HILARIOUS!

i personally love the women interview clothing one, only to take pointers though.

As for new facebook, it's kinda confusing. the top has this mini bio about you: Name, school, location, languages you speak, if you're dating anyone, birthday, work.
then a little montage of a few pictures.
just a bit rearranged.
I hated when "friendship" was introduced. enjoyed seeing "wall to wall."
facebook for iphone is the ultimate distraction tool!

It worries me when it is still "late night" both when I leave for work AND when I get home....yet I don't work nights😉

I can't list them in order, because I don't love any of them over the others. But....some of the top ones...

A League of Their Own
Alien and Aliens (I can't separate them even though they are completely different movies and I would argue one is a thriller while the other is sci-fi)
Stargate
Aladdin
The Secret Garden (Hallmark Hall of Fame Version)
Steel Magnolias
When Harry Met Sally
The Women (The original version....both remakes blew)
Meet Me In St Louis
The Family Stone
Home for the Holidays

I have always wished that I didn't need to sleep. I would love all the extra hours. Even being able to need less sleep would be great. If I could just sleep four hours and feel okay would be great. Unfortunately, I seem to be one of those people that needs at least 7 and ideally 8 hours to feel like a human being.

i usually get about 5 hours of sleep per night. i agree that sleep = waste of time, although i do enjoy dreaming very much. i actually tried to come up with a no sleep only nap program lol
it consisted of two 2 hour naps and two 20 minute naps, besides that no other sleep. suffice to say it failed miserably lol. theres no way around it, we need our sleep =(

evolutionary fail

It's harder for me to stay up during the winter months because I just want to be cozy in bed!
