The Late Night Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Another all-nighter has been successful, woot. Now hopefully I will not crash when afternoon comes around. From my experience that has to be the biggest obstacle when no sleep was achieved the previous night. Doesn't help that I have an evening class today as well.... 😴

In no particular order:

Fight club
Lord of War
The Godfather pt 1
American Gangster
The Lion King
The Dark Knight
X-men II
Se7en
The Empire Strikes Back
Raiders of the Lost Ark

I got home from class (a final no less) around 7 and promptly fell asleep. Woke up at 5am and have been working on a presentation for later today ever since. we're in the middle of a blizzard (over 1.5 feet and counting...) and I realy don't want to go TA or go to lab today. Debating on skipping and claiming the roads are too horrible to commute (not a total lie either!)
Choices choices.
It's sad cause this is the last week of classes and my last week of undergrad... I should be more motivated, right?

Wow, we have had a few inches total over the past few days here is SW Pennsylvania. Nothing at all really. It's pretty cold, though.

StephBee, congrats on reaching the end of undergrad.

I noticed on your MDApps you had an interview invite at the Univ of Hawaii. If you don't mind my asking, are you from Hawaii originally? I've heard it is almost impossible to get an interview there unless you have strong ties.

We've finally got some snow accumulation. I was getting tired of looking at the ugly brown mudgrass.

i have about 3.5 feet blocking my front door.

I'm in my university's 24 hour library cramming for my health psych exam thats tomorrow. After that I have a paper that is due at 11 for my psych honors seminar, and postlab for my gen chem II lab.

This thread is about to become my best friend. ='p

Nope, no ties whatsoever except the whole WICHE thing. I guess they just liked me. they interview about 60-70 OOS people but only like 6 get in so my chances aren't great but it's my first interview so I'mma stay hopeful

We got 43.6 inches over the past 4 days. 4th larges amount of snow in a 4 day peroid ever (record is only 47 I think).

Anatomy lab practical that I should be studying for but i'm so tired i may just sleep and wake up uber early.😴

Best of luck! :luck:

Holy crow! I thought the 20 inches we had in one day in February was bad!

What is everyone up to tonight? I'm here studying for finals this week.....right now I'm reviewing physics.

This is my only day off for a few weeks. I should be cleaning my disaster of a house...instead I played Rockband and watched Bones.

I am pleased with my choice.

i just came to bump this thread...glad to see that mission has already been accomplished.

So what's up with people on this thread working in the hospital during late at night?

So what's up with people on this thread working in the hospital during late at night?

people need care at all hours of the day. some of the people who contribute to this thread happen to work the night shift at the hospital.

Because hospitals at night are calm and quiet so I get to make money and study/do secondaries. Not to mention the crazy stuff that walk in the ER at night!

ACS test in a few hours. I'm currently telling myself I'm not freaking out. Which definitely means I'm freaking out.

I loved the midnight ER shifts when I was doing my training for EMT. Going to try to get a job there now that I"m graduating.

Downside; Georgetown rejection yesterday. That makes 3 complete rejections, 3 MSTP rejections (still in running for MD) and 1 interview.

What are the other 18 schools doing!?

Sigh. This whole process is driving me crazy I think.

I should really start packing. Went out for my going away party last night, got drunk, slept till 3 this afternoon and will be wide awake for like 4 more hours 😛

StephBee... If you don't mind me asking, why are you trying to do MSTP? Is it a certain field that you want to research in or something?

I could give you the cookie cutter "I want to both see patients and do research" and while this is entirely true, I feel like it doesn't quite cut it.

The truth: I really want to do bench and clinical research, follow things out of the lab and into the real world of medicine, specifically oncology.

I was on a great track for it too. I've got a fair amount of research, standard clinical stuff (you can look at my MD apps if you really care) but my MCAT screwed me. I had a horrible testing day (long story short: they said I could move my car and then told me that they were going to invalidate my test score because of it. Spent the whole test fighting with them till finally getting things straightened out. Should've just voided my test but I took a july MCAT and didn't want to push my luck any more than I already am). and unless some miracle happens, I prolly won't get into an MD/PhD program anywhere. 🙁 At this rate, I prolly won't get in anywhere peroid. Will retake MCAT, and apply next year if I have to.

I had an issue when I took my MCAT too... funny, you can only plan so much of life, there is always room for unexpected tragedy.

The reason I asked is I've enjoyed your posts on other threads for a while and was kind of surprised when you mentioned you were having trouble. I had read your MD apps, really it seems like that stupid test is the only thing you don't have going for you. You really seem to be the ideal medical school candidate from what I have seen, and you also seem to have a good head on your shoulders.

If you get in just MD, many schools will allow you to opt in to the MD/PhD program after a year or two. Of course, there will be some interviews and such, but by then you will have research experience (if you choose to), it's usually a formality (your research director makes a phone call if you are a good candidate).

Anyway, I am rooting for you.

Aww, well thanks! Everyone keeps telling me I'll get in somewhere (given, I have a really top heavy school list) but when it's December and you're looking at 1 interview at a school that accepts 6-10 OOS people a year, it's hard to stay that optomistic. I really think it's because of how late I was. I submitted when my MCAT scores came out ( not knowing how I was going to do on them, I didn't want to submit until I knew my score), took a month to get verified and I had all my schools secondaries done within like 2 weeks of recieving them. I'm an creative writing minor so I doubt it's my essays. (EDIT: I just realized how convoluted that sounded. I just meant that I write a lot and am pretty good at expressing myself through writing...)

Maybe they just haven't gotten to my file yet. I applied to a lot of non-rolling schools too so all hope is not gone at this point.

THough, this whole experience made me think of one more answer for the "What's your biggest flaw?" question... I'm not very patient. I mean, I can be patient for a few days, maybe a few weeks but turns out, 3 months is about my limit 😛 That and I'm really clumsy

The late application thing is always a killer. But lesson learned, if you do end up waiting and reapplying.

The only people who have patience about the process are people who don't want it badly enough to get it, IMO.

At least at this point, you can relax a bit knowing you have done plenty well to get into medical school. So it is not really about getting a chance to do that, it is just about getting the location and opportunity you want to do translational research. I know it doesn't help, but looking back, if I had just KNOWN that I was going to get in somewhere, I'd have slept easier at night. Which reminds me... gnight!

This paper is killing me. I slept all day yesterday ( had a crown put on and was in so much pain I just knocked myself out 😛) and now I have no motivation to do ANYTHING.

10 pages down. 5ish more to go.! Why, oh why, did I put this off till the last minute?

Every time I look at my ochem book my head starts to hurt and I feel like laying down 🙁

I'm pretty sure I don't have it in me to write up this last patient. Writing down things I already know to be ridiculed or ignored by my attending...

I know that feeling. I've got A and P on friday and I don't even wanna look at it yet.

On the upside, any paper that i get to use an episode of Penn and Teller Bullsh*t as a source is a paper I'm happier to write (even if it is on the death penalty)

Hey Late Nighters,

i just noticed today that I received my 2 year member SDN badge. :woot:

Honestly didn't think i'd use this site so much or still be sticking around when I first signed up. Sure glad I did... I learned a lot from everyone here on the boards. I might not have even gotten an acceptance if it weren't for SDN!

Congrats.

I never thought I'd use this site so much either.

Just realized I have to work on new years eve! I have to get my shift cover, I'd rather work on xmass eve than new years eve.

Any late nighters have an iphone 4? Does your keypad sometimes push random buttons or hitting buttons cause 3-4 to get hit? I've only had my phone for a little over a week and this is the 3rd time I've had to restart it for that problem. I think i might have to take it back and get a new one. I can't find this being a common issue online at all though....

I've had mine since the release and I've never had the issue, I would do a hard reset through your itunes, if the problem presists then take it in and let them know whats going on and make sure to tell them you did a hard reset through itunes and it didn't fix the problem

Thanks. I'm wondering if it could be due to grease or whatever being left over on the screen after use of the keyboard but who knows. I might take it in tomorrow. I wanna get it taken care of before I leave for norcal/before the holidays create massive lines.
