I said "Because its the only respecatable way to enter the Upper Middle class..." at a summer internship interview. Needless to say, I did not get accepted.

too socially inept for business, too socially apt for science phd, too dumb for law school.

Make sure you practice your answer with a medical student or a doctor before interview day.

"Do we really have to sit here and fabricate reasons for why we want to be physicians?

We want to work in healthcare because it's unlike any other field. It provides an opportunity to work with people, make people feel better or at least provide an explanation. It combines science with real interaction and outside/practical stressors, it provides unlimited educational/intellectual challenge/stimulus, and it's more than likely always going to be a "booming" field.

We want to be doctors because we want to lead, invent, make sense of things for people, be the direct line of communication frustrated or scared people are looking for, understand the ultimate "why" behind what we do, and we want to apply our technical know-how in a way that benefits people like ourselves before we knew ****.

I want to be a doctor because I want to be dependable. Whether it's a scared patient, an unconscious or confused patient, an angry patient, or to teach a skill to a resident, student, volunteer, or patient. Because I know when I'm scared, I'm just looking for an explanation.

Plus it pays well."

OP-

At the very least, I would prepare some sort of powerpoint presentation that you can whip out during the interview. Make sure to include baked goods and perhaps a song. This would impress your interviewer immensely.

Or you could just be honest and tell him why you are a great fit for the profession? 😉

I read over some previous posts about this topic. I was wondering if anyone could post what they actually said in the interview and if they think it was received well.. how long of an answer should you give? how detailed should it be?

You can go chronological (big life events or experiences that led you here) or pick that "eureka" moment and give it a bit more depth and flavor. A fun way to do it is prep a good 10-15 second story relating to pop culture and make it conversational: "do you know the show the wonder years???". "why yes I do!". "well I was clueless like Fred savage, my dad wasn't a doctor but I grew up and fell in love with medicine". Elaborate as necessary and it will make people remember the answer. I would avoid discussing How doogie howser, house, and scrubs may have inspired you unless you have a real witty story but whatever you do try and be engaging and you'll both have more fun!
