Jarvik apparently also pretends to be an athlete. Remember the commercial with him rowing? It was supposedly a body double. 🙄

GASP! You mean everything i see on tv isn't 100% true?!?! Crap... there goes my main source of information on medicine. Well, at least I've still got reliable wikipedia to fall back on .... wait, why is everyone snickering?

😉

They are actual doctors. The "medical advice" from Jarvik was questionable, but they both adequately earned their titles.

Those 2 are actual doctors like George W. Bush is an actual war veteran.

I like how this is one of the first sites that comes up for Jarvik.

"'He’s about as much an outdoorsman as Woody Allen,' said a longtime collaborator, Dr. O. H. Frazier"

And Dr. Rey actually completed a surgical residency. So despite the fact that he bothers me, he did the same work as the rest of us, and Jarvik got at least far enough to be called doctor.

Rey did GS at UCLA, which has to be embarrassing for that program.

Since WS and Tired are technically correct (which is the best kind of correct), allow me to amend my prior statement:

Rey and Jarvik are actual doctors like George W. Bush is an actual human being.

I"m jealous, but in a "What kind of idoit am I that I didn't score a gig like that" kind of way...same way I feel about the guys who invented You Tube, for example.

I'm not hating or anything (good for him) but am I the only one who thinks he should have worn something NICER and not taken a picture looking like he's post-call standing outside of his call room?

One poster who met him even said he's so not the type to sell skin products. I can see why.

Probably depends on the market. Some clients (which is what they are called in the spa world rather than patients) prefer seeing someone who looks "medical" - the white coat and scrubs fits that need. Others want to see someone who looks glamorous, hence the designer suits on Dr. Rey.

At any rate, it looks like a photo taken for his residency program; perhaps it was the only professional one he had available.

Yeah, you put on a nice and crisp white coat on top of your french-cuff, spread collar Thomas Pink shirt, full windsor knot and matching cuff-links. You have to have a certain "look."

You're selling yourself just as much as the product. Remember the target audience buying this stuff. They're vain!

People sometimes (in my opinion) fail to realize that medicine and business are not mutually exclusive fields. There is nothing wrong with being business savy, and knowing how to turn a profit outsite of billing insurance companies. Like Dr JPH said earlier (RIP), as long as they believe in the product they are selling, there isn't anything wrong with it. However, there IS something wrong with using the title 'Dr' to trick people into using harmful products or slapping your name on something you know is crap just to make a buck. This crosses the line where medicine falls in second place to the business side of things. With the way internet and media keep expanding, I don't see how almost any field of medicine couldn't benefit from some advertising (in some form). It's just good business sense, and as long as it leads to more medical treatment for patients, it's fine.

I say more power to the guy. If he can do some stuff on the side to supplement his income then all the more. I do some hospice and home health work as a medical director and add another 60k to my income. This helps when you have a family including 3 kids, a kid in college, house payment, 3 car payments, cell phones, utilities, insurance, student loans to pay etc etc.

Yeah, that's true... it's hard times; we are in a recession after all.

With $4 gas prices, I had to turn to selling crack rock on the side to supplement my income. That resident salary just isn't cutting it.

But seriously I can't believe this thread got resurrected. And I still stand by my initial assertion: Dude's a sell out.

Should be ashamed of himself... all those years of college and medical school to sell some bogus cosmetics -- with absolutely no benefit to the consumer. It's like performing sham surgery.

his 3 different undergrad institutions, misspellings and grammatical errors, not to mention the multiple 'manuscript pending submission' entries 3-4 years later all demonstrate his douchehood.

let the buyer beware. i'm a fan of capitalism so kudos.

He never misrepresents himself or says this will reverse aging or anything crazy at all. The product is slightly different and interesting, the website is nicely presented. I like it, why all the hate? Start to look around the hospital and see all the dogma, treatments, procedures, and surgery that is done that ultimately may not be correct or ever help the patient. At times, we even know it, but maybe its all we have or someone feels forced, or (gasp) the doctor has some RVUitis....If you havent seen it, you havent been around long enough or arent paying enough cynical attention.

His M.D. is something that garners some respect (valid or not) from the consumer, why shouldnt he be able to use it? Would you like him to handicap his opportunities because we dont morally approve, thats absurd, as nobody will agree with 100% of anyones views.

People, diet pills still make a killing at the box office, everyone knows they dont work to some degree, but there is hope in dem dere pills. Hes a smart businessman and thats respectable, something drs are notoriously poor at.

BTW, its not totally uncommon for manuscripts to take years to get to print, its insane considering thats supposed to be the most up to date info, but not unheard of.
