Just was curious as their is a whole secition dedicated to this in the med school form, some random questions of enlightment:

To all non-trads:

Age, stats, what did you do before dent school specifically, undergrad major, how you decided to attend dental school vs any other career, crappiest/best job before dental school, and how did you tackle getting into dental school especially for those who where out of school 5+ years.

Thanks for participating!👍

5. All jobs have been pretty bad. Currently I am a manager at a high end retail establishment
6. not in yet, have 2 interviews so far that I feel pretty good about it, maybe a few more will roll in. I was out of Masters for 1 year. had not taken a science class in 2 years. working 40 hrs a week. studied for the DAT for about 3 to 5 hours a day 4 to 6 days a week for 2.5 months and then took the DAT. My scores are not amazing, but God gave me a miricle to get those scores given my circumstances

1. 28 now
2. 20AA/21TS (3rd time, kept getting a 14 in quant section, but I have all A's in my math classes, go figure)
3.19 cGPA, 3.80 sGPA
3. B.S. in biology this past May
4. Screwed around from '98 to '01 with college- no degree. Joined Air Force spring following 9/11. The job the Air Force gave me was dental assistanting. As I learned more and grew older felt this was a good career move. Got out early in '05 and been pursuing ever since.
5. Currently I am a dental assistant- it sucks!
6. Second cycle applying. First time got one interview at Midwestern out of 10 schools and got the alternate spot. I had initially applied to 10 schools in June then added 5 in September. This time I have 2 interviews out of 15 schools. First interview was at Univ. of Florida on Sept 12th. Been stressed ever since. Second interview is with Nova Feb 4th. Still waiting to hear about interviews with the 5 schools I applied to late.

Good Luck to all...

good luck, you deserve out, shocked you are having so much trouble with your stats, experience, and background...

i'm just barely starting preparations, no test scores to speak of as of yet; i'm 27, i have a BA in yiddish and an MS in speech-language pathology, currently an SLP clinical fellow. although i have a clinical master's degree, because my undergrad was in humanities i have the pleasure of a good deal of pre-reqs to tackle before i even think about applying. (i have some bio and some anatomy/physiology, but i need more of both, plus chem/ochem and physics at the very least.) i'm currently looking at post-bacc pre-med programs (i live in arlington, va, and work in washington dc, so american and georgetown stand out for that purpose), planning to work full time while doing so since i already have plenty of loans hanging over my head... which means that by the time i get around to applications and hopefully matriculating, i'll be even more non-traditional. 🙂 hoping for the best though!

Curious why the change so quick, you seem like you got a good career, and recently graduated...

I'm a PE (Professional Engineer - Civil)

B.S. Civil Engineering, 2000

been wanting to do something different for a LONG time, just now found dental. took a dental assisting class and volunteered and really enjoying it, so decided to apply. like it because you get to do something with your hands, stay busy, talk to people, etc...

have been pretty lucky in the job department, just don't like being chained to a desk, I graduated in 2000, took a lot of science in undergrad, and had been taking a pre-med class here and there while trying to figure out which direction to go, so it wasn't too bad, was fun studying for bio/chem for DAT, seeing as I took them in 1994....

not in yet, just finished app a couple weeks ago, not just waiting for the winds to blow my way....

Good luck everyone!!

-just turnt 25
-BS. in nursing, Loma Linda U. '06.
-started working and realized it was not for me. thought i could do 2 years of medsurge for experience and then do public health nursing but couldnt hang. now working per diem at this blood bank, im a nurse supervisor aka glorified phlebotomist. dont really have any stress at work so its a perfect job for a student as i finish up physics and biochem. wanna do dent for the mission service opportunity.
-my stats are pretty weak, 18aa/18ts/21pat. sGPA3.4.
-applied only to loma linda, cuz i felt it was my only shot! plus they have a very strong community outreach/mission program.

Age: 32

2nd year applying
3.93 Non Science Undergrad
3.9 Science
3.8 Grad

B.S. Accounting
M.S. Information Systems

DAT: 20 Academic Average
PAT: 19

Lowest score was an 18 on Bio and Reading comprehension
Highest was a 23 on O-chem

I had no science in undergrad, so I took a year off and did the prerequisites. I applied to 2 schools last year, got 2 interviews, Colorado and ASDOH. This year I expanded and applied to 7 schools and got 4 interviews, Louisville, Marquette, Colorado, and Buffalo. My #1 choice is CO.

I currently do IT consulting, but have wanted to get into dental school since 2005. I didn't think it'd take 4 years to get into dental school, but oh well. Good luck to all you oldies but goodies.
