Overall, I thought this was an excellent program that I plan to rank very highly.

Residents: 5 categoricals. All seemed very happy. About 50% married, 25-50% with children. will interview here at the end of January (this is my home institution). Earlier in the year, I didn't really know what to make of this place as I had no other basis for comparison. But now that I've done some away rotations and have compared notes with other sub-I's at different institutions, I must say UCSD is a great place to be. I've done ~5 months of surgery here (three as MS3, two as MS4) and I've met nearly all the residents, who are almost all down-to-earth and personable. The attending-resident interactions are pleasant; the OR atmosphere is relaxed and a good learning environment. I still have quite a ways to go on the interview trail, but so far, this place will be in my top 3, if not my top choice. (I should also disclose that I am a life-long Californian who is probably too weak to live in snow-prone areas).

- Residents: 9 categoricals. Almost all do research and fellowships. They get the best fellowships out there. They seemed generally happy, but commented that they work very hard and that expectations are very high. Some faculty members apparently ensure that residents are reminded often that they are at a Harvard institution. The residents seemed honest, but hinted at heavy work loads and high expectations.
- Faculty: congenial, good working relationships with each other. They get the most complicated cases and are *very* proud of that.
- Pros: Excellent training at one of the best institutions. Excellent opportunities for research and fellowships. Name recognition. The most amazing simulation skills center you will ever see.
- Cons: Multiple sites, including one in Worcester (one hour away, but with housing). Very high standards and high pressure (too high?).

I left feeling like this would be an amazing place to train, and I will definitely rank it at the top, maybe #1? I'm just a little worried about the rain...

Residents: 7 categoricals. All seemed content and happy with their program. They seem to work hard, but they feel very well trained and have great support from the PD and faculty. Research here is a huge plus: you can choose not to do research, and you can choose whether you would like to do it after R2, R3 or Chief year—and it's funded.

Facilities: University Hospital, Harborview, VA. They are trying to create a WWAMI (Montana, Idaho, etc) away site for R3s to rotate through if they wish. All attendings at the three hospitals are UW faculty.

Faculty: I only met a few, but many are previous residents who came back after fellowship/assistant prof positions elsewhere. That really says something. I found them extremely approachable. In particular, I thought the PD (Dr. Horvath) and the Chair (Dr. Pellegrini) were incredible assets to the program. Dr. Pellegrini is easy to talk to, and he invites residents (this is from residents I spoke with) over to his house to have dinner with him and his family while they are on his service.

City: Seattle. Great cost of living compared to other programs I'm looking at, but definitely lots of gray skies.

I thought this was a strong program in a great city.
Residents: I think 7 per year. They almost seemed a little too happy and chipper—must have been the free sushi and wine? They also have fantastic weather, so that must be it. Most go onto fellowships, vascular and MIS seem popular. Seem to have good level of autonomy at smaller hospitals, while being able to work closely with faculty on complex cases at UCLA. Research is absolutely required after R2 year. They seemed quite inflexible about offering alternatives, although they did mention there was flexibility in the system.

Facilities: UCLA (almost done with amazing new hospital), Oliveview, VA, Santa Monica hospital. I think they do a rotation at USC for burns/trauma.

Faculty: The Chair didn't show up for the interview day, supposedly for the purposes of giving a talk/presentation elsewhere. Is this an indication of his interest in education, resident training? I just thought that was really poor form. I enjoyed my interactions with the other faculty—I had some fun and interesting interviews. The program administrator, Rebecca, is fantastic as well.

City: If you only have a few free hours each week, why not spend them in the sun?

Overall, I thought this was an excellent program that I plan to rank very highly.

Residents: 5 categoricals. All seemed very happy. About 50% married, 25-50% with children. They spend time together outside the hospital, at the beach, playing sports, and generally enjoying West coast life. They said they did not feel overworked, and they did feel appreciated. They are happy with the clinical training and supportive faculty. About 50-75% do research, and 75% do fellowships.

Facilities: UCSD Hillcrest campus is the main spot. A bit shabby, 1960s style. ER on the first floor but trauma bay on the second floor (strange). Big burn unit which I found very impressive.

Faculty: Awesome. Very happy to be at UCSD. Love their residents, their work, and their city. Enthusiastic, laid back, supportive, and interested in teaching.

City: awesome. It has everything, and the weather is great. It is a driving city and the rent can be expensive though!

Overall, I really enjoyed this program a lot. I would be delighted to end of there.

will interview here at the end of January (this is my home institution). Earlier in the year, I didn't really know what to make of this place as I had no other basis for comparison. But now that I've done some away rotations and have compared notes with other sub-I's at different institutions, I must say UCSD is a great place to be. I've done ~5 months of surgery here (three as MS3, two as MS4) and I've met nearly all the residents, who are almost all down-to-earth and personable. The attending-resident interactions are pleasant; the OR atmosphere is relaxed and a good learning environment. I still have quite a ways to go on the interview trail, but so far, this place will be in my top 3, if not my top choice. (I should also disclose that I am a life-long Californian who is probably too weak to live in snow-prone areas).

Overall, I really liked this place. The night before was held at a cool restaurant in downtown Portland and the residents that came (not all of them were in their research year) happily circulated around to talk to all of us and answer our questions. The interview day was typical, program presentation followed by 3 interviews, two faculty, a chief and then informal chats with the PD and a round table (4 applicants) with the chairman. I didn't think that my interviews went well, more because I'd love to go there and I stressed myself out. It is a large program 12/ year between 7 hospitals. I asked residents if they felt "lost in the crowd" and they said no. On the contrary, they highlighted the positives-experiencing different environments, more varied attending interactions...The "research year" was defined very loosely. You can do basic science but a lot of programs said that if you chose to do a basic science project, two years is a more realistic time frame. You can do a CC year, rural surgery year, educational research, and many types of clincal research.... The faculty that I met were all really friendly, down-to-earth people, especially the chairman. Portland is a great city. Check out this place!

Overall, I thought this was an excellent program that I plan to rank very highly.

Residents: 5 categoricals. All seemed very happy. About 50% married, 25-50% with children. They spend time together outside the hospital, at the beach, playing sports, and generally enjoying West coast life. They said they did not feel overworked, and they did feel appreciated. They are happy with the clinical training and supportive faculty. About 50-75% do research, and 75% do fellowships.

Facilities: UCSD Hillcrest campus is the main spot. A bit shabby, 1960s style. ER on the first floor but trauma bay on the second floor (strange). Big burn unit which I found very impressive.

Faculty: Awesome. Very happy to be at UCSD. Love their residents, their work, and their city. Enthusiastic, laid back, supportive, and interested in teaching.

City: awesome. It has everything, and the weather is great. It is a driving city and the rent can be expensive though!

Overall, I really enjoyed this program a lot. I would be delighted to end of there.

will interview here at the end of January (this is my home institution). Earlier in the year, I didn't really know what to make of this place as I had no other basis for comparison. But now that I've done some away rotations and have compared notes with other sub-I's at different institutions, I must say UCSD is a great place to be. I've done ~5 months of surgery here (three as MS3, two as MS4) and I've met nearly all the residents, who are almost all down-to-earth and personable. The attending-resident interactions are pleasant; the OR atmosphere is relaxed and a good learning environment. I still have quite a ways to go on the interview trail, but so far, this place will be in my top 3, if not my top choice. (I should also disclose that I am a life-long Californian who is probably too weak to live in snow-prone areas).
