In lieu of the other threads popping up, I thought it'd be good for those of us taking the test to identify ourselves 👍

I'm not planning on following a rigid study schedule until January, but I think I'm going to watch a single video off of wikipremed daily to lightly review.

Between the CBT FL's, SAP, and the Official Guide most of us have endured 150+ science passages and 1000+ science questions. Aside from verbal, what is the likelihood that we come across a passage or a question that is taken verbatim from the AAMC prep material?

I'm asking this because we have all noticed that the way the passages are written and the amount of details given are much beyond what we need to solve the questions. This compels me to believe that there are more than one set of questions to be assigned to each passage, giving AAMC the ability to produce many different tests with minimal amount of work.

I remember reading once that a person had on his/her retake 2-3 passages word for word taken from his first test. One of my friends actually told me that he had two discrete questions that were exactly the same on AAMC prep material.

I'm interested in knowing what you guys think.

wow, this is my first time hearing about anything like this. I thought they didn't repeat questions. Part of me would love to see some things I did in TBR, but on the other hand, if I knew it was from something I did and missed the question again, I'd be kicking myself in the head haha.

Well, my Kaplan online course expires midnight tonight so this week, I'm just going to review my notes and some problems I marked in TPRHL workbook and other books. Also gonna finish the orgo passages in TPRHL workbook and finish reading EK orgo (2 chapters left).

This will be my last post on these forums until after I finish the test Friday. Going to take this week SDN-free.

I truly feel like I have done enough to get a 35. I studied 4 hours everyday for the entire summer before my first try but I feel like I slacked off a bit towards the last 2 weeks and also got a really unlucky BS section and made some silly decisions (drinking gatorade) during the test. I studied even harder this time around (starting from Thanksgiving last year) and I feel like I have done enough to get a 35+. I know of 3 friends who all scored 37s on their MCAT and I can say with confidence that I studied more than all three of them combined. If I do end up with a <35, I hope that the only reason is verbal because I know at the end of the day, that section comes down to natural reasoning/analytical ability developed over an entire childhood/early adolescence.

Curious as to what people's plans are for Thursday? Study until the evening? Don't study at all? Study until noon/1pm?
I realized I'm a fool and put more pressure on myself because my family doesn't know I got a 23; I told them I did better because I couldn't face them.

I'm planning to do a verbal test followed by a light review of key concepts, equations, numeric values and special graphs. This shouldn't take me more than 3 hours to do. I'll probably do verbal test in the morning and do the review in the evening, so I can process all that data while I'm asleep.

I started studying in November. Since I work full time, it has been 1-3 hours a night and 4+ on weekends (during football seasons, Sunday was my break day). I took all the courses besides Chemistry in a post-bacc from 2011-2012, so most of the information is fresh.

RE: AAMC 11, the PS was probably the hardest and most concept-driven of them all. A lot more relating different topics to each other and work to understand what the questions are really asking. Also, it had a ton more calculation than any of the others.

Verbal was SUPER tricky. Passages 2-4 made my eyes glaze over, and I switched answers on probably a half-dozen questions on my second trip through.

BS was pretty standard except for 2 passages that are renowned for sucking (ie, ebola and lysosomes).

All in all, if it is the best representation, it won't be a cakewalk.

so i'm having a bit of a dilemma. I'm scheduled to take AAMC 11, review it tuesday and wednesday try to do a condensed review of everything. however, now im rethinking it and thinking to maybe do the guidebook tomorrow, review it monday while doing more reviewing of questionable areas and then taking the test tuesday and reviewing it wednesday. do you guys think taking it Tuesday is too close to test day? I'm also worried a below 30 score will really shake my confidence but I don't think it makes a difference if the possible below 30 score happens Monday or Tuesday.

I'll be taking AAMC Tuesday with some review Wednesday and light review Thursday morning. Thursday at noon the books go in a bin in a closet where they shall await my scores and their assured post on SDN classifieds. :xf:

I think you should definitely do the guidebook, specifically biology. Those types of passages are going to be in your future. Whether you decide to see them for the first time on Friday or on sunday is up to you.

there's no doubt about me doing the guidebook passages. it was more of a matter of what days. I think our schedules are very similar though and I think I may push it to Tuesday, review it Wednesday and Thursday until noon do some more reviewing at which time my books are going into a box to be sold since regardless of what happens, im not taking this test a 3rd time. I guess taking it Tuesday isn't considered too close to test day? thanks!

Call them. I spoke to a guy named Marvin, very nice and helpful, and he will give you the tracking info as well as tell you when you will have your book.

Trying to keep studying these last few days, but I'm finding that it's hard to do much in the time given. I think I'll just review the notes that I've written a bunch more. So far...

So there's not much variability in my scores. Unfortunately, it's be impossible to get any section perfect because there are just those little things I don't know/remember or ambiguous questions. A last minute decision to change an answer in BS based on verbal reasoning logic cost me the 14. I'd be ecstatic with a 38 on the real deal. I know it sounds hopeless, but I'm banking on improving verbal as much as possible to get 12+. AAMC 11 to come soon.

Just took the BIO test from the guide book.

That insulin resistance passage was a big giant WTF or what? Good thing I moved on after 10 minutes, b/c the way they present concepts on some of the passages, are very convoluted and could have been done in an easier manner...

That's exactly the way it should be done. You shouldn't get too caught up with the passage details. Treat it as verbal; try to get the main idea and know where to find everything and move on to the questions. When I did the passages I timed myself as if I were taking a CBT, and that helped pushing my forward. However, I still got caught up a little with small details that I couldn't wrap my head around.

I swear, everything on MCAT is just the opposite of what we have been taught throughout our undergrad journey. Instead of trying to focus on the details and master the article, now we are expected to skim through dense scientific literature, pick up the most trivial things on the way, and cheat our way through answering the questions.

BTW, I thought the fat and insulin passage was the hardest due to the convoluted questions. I kept forgetting the abbreviations they used for the molecules and kept referring back to the passage to remind myself of what they were talking about. That costed me a considerable amount of time.

Wouldn't this be an example of a 2015 Passage? With the added Biochemistry?

I totally agree with you. I now understand how CRUCIAL reading passages as if they're verbal passages really is. Also, the passages are so dense, that without having taken notes, I feel like I would be completely lost. That's the way I felt on my first MCAT, btw, i think I must have spent 10-20 mins on a passage, because i haven't done enough practice and freaked out. Hopefully it will be better this time.

Yea, MCAT is much about shortcuts and reading for the main idea, all while being extremely pressed for time. I definitely do not agree with that, but I guess we have to follow this strategy to get a decent score and get into medical school. I really hate MCAT lol

I just went over the sample discrete questions. Nothing out of the ordinary except more experimental-driven questions. Take a look at them. I was surprised by the amount of arithmetic required to answer a simple question.

AAMC #10: 10/10/10 (30)

Happy with another 30 and even more happy that I've finally got my PS score up to a 10. You guys weren't kidding about the VR scale on this one, jeez. I really feel like my VR would have been an 11 on any of the other FL's. This scale was brutal.

The BS section felt very easy besides just a few tricky questions. I thought I might break over a 10 on BS on this one but apparently it wasn't as easy as it felt.

I feel that 9 & 10 were generally easier and covered material more relevant to my content review than the earlier tests. Than again it might just be that I'm honing my knowledge at this point.

Have you taken AAMC 11 yet? If so, how did it compare to AAMC 9 and 10? I liked AAMC 9. I think I did well on the science sections... and for the most part the verbal section was readable... I got 100% on the first passage which made me feel good... timing is my issue when it comes to verbal... I didn't get to the last passage... for the next two practices and the real thing I am going to start at 4 minutes and count up by seven and have it written on my scratch paper before the actual verbal assessment... so I will have something to gauge my time by... I got messed up by thinking I had more time than I actually had... but I also feel like I need the extra time to properly analyse the passages too. Oh well, I hope I improve this week! Good luck! 🙂

AAMC 11 is the best single indicator. But the average of 9,10,11 will be a good indicator as well.

I haven't taken 11 yet but I also found VR on 9 pretty straightforward and I got an 11 on it.

EK verbal test 11 went better than 10, but made 3 silly mistakes (read is as opposed to is not). It went better than 10. I'm going to try and do one test a day to finish the book. I will say one thing and that's that the passages were really interesting, well except for the antimatter/seeking beauty one.

How do we tell if we were 1 question away from a higher or lower score? I couldn't find this information on my score report.

I scored 39/55 for Physics and Gen Chem on the guidebook. How do I correlate this with a scaled score?

Yep, I only counted 4 questions on physics 1 instead of 5.

Is the score conversion in the book, or was this something you did based on the other aamc's?

37/56, physics really did a number on me. The first and last passage really made me scratch my head on most of the questions I really like the guidebook though. I think the way the passages/questions are set up is great.

Have some confidence! (Odd to hear coming from me) I'm sure my outlook will change tomorrow but I'm seeing minor improvements and trying not to dwell on mistakes. If only I could find a more recent site with DO schools to compare my average and relieve some more stress, I'd be a happy camper. The biggest thing will be to not get overwhelmed or intimidated. It's all basic stuff wrapped up very carefully to scare you.

It was actually gChem for me. I got 22/26 on the physics section but 19/28 on the gChem. Very, very trivial mistakes, one of which I forgot to square root.

If only we could supplement my gen chem and your physics, we'd make for a killer PS score haha.

I missed two questions in the gun/pendulum because of a missed decimal place so I'm right there with you in terms of silly mistakes.

Hopefully. I read once that they include experimental questions, or even experimental passages in the test. These questions/passages are not scored. However, this could work both ways. If it turns out that you did better on these questions than on the scored once, then you are out of luck. Anyhow, they need to curve the test to produce a bell-shaped curve. Try to be in the better half and you are fine...at least for DO.

They do not say how it will be scored....Will the scale be 45 or will it be 60 because of the new section added?

How do you prevent the confidence hit from these passages?
