In lieu of the other threads popping up, I thought it'd be good for those of us taking the test to identify ourselves 👍

I'm not planning on following a rigid study schedule until January, but I think I'm going to watch a single video off of wikipremed daily to lightly review.

Good luck to everyone... we will crush this exam..

It's not like it's bad to have a lot of Orgo.. but I was just SOOO surprised there was barely any ACTUAL biology. I mean, what is more important to be a physician? The roles of organ systems, hormones, and how physiology works...or being able to do organic chemistry?

I just don't understand.

Organic chemistry drives biology. . .

we are organic.... thats why were called organisms.... all the drugs we will prescribe have their basis in organic chemistry... if you think this is what, youre going to hate biochemistry and upper level classes in med school.

One of the times I was going in for surgery...the last thing I remember was the Anesthesiologist talking to me about the chemical composition of Propofol. We were discussing that it was a phenol with isopropyl side chains, then it was lights out.

I know everyone is still recovering from this beast. I am taking mine in 2 months.Does anyone have the Princeton Review online access that they are willing to sell (if it doesn't expire for the next 2 months) Or PR full length tests.(PDF or paper). I just want to get as much practice as possible before the real thing.

I took biochem in undergrad, and I understand the relative importance of all of it... I am just saying I don't think that having a test that mostly tests that instead of other biological concepts is the best test for medical school admissions.

Feel free to disagree, but then why would so much prep material focus on all the micro, anatomy, physiology, genetics, and simple biochem instead of working through experiments? I just disagree on how the prep and test itself is handled, but my opinion doesn't really matter!

because while there will be a lot of focus on anatomy and physiology in medical school, there will also be topics that you wont care about and complain about studying..

they want to make sure you learn the stuff you dont want to just as well as the ones that interest you. they want to make sure you can suck it up and learn the material.

the problem is not the MCAT, it is the test prep companies.

most people say there is roughly 20-35% organic chem in the BS. which is exactly how much there was this time around.

I actually really like organic. I find it kinda fun... Haha but I definitely did nor do a great job preparing for organic in the way that they test it. It seems like so many classes jist focus on you memorizing reagents and such and not being able to use it in a practical sense.

I completely agree about the prep companies. This was my second test, and it was so completely different from the first. I think if I ever need to take it again.. which let's pray to whatever god that I don't need to... I will study concepts, how concepts relate to each other, how experiments use those concepts, etc. That's really what the test is about.. the big picture. Both Kaplan and EK, in my opinion, did not prepare me for that way of thinking.

so I went into the test thinking that PS was my best section- but now I'm starting to think I did the worst on it. I had to guess on 3 questions and i usually finished around 20 minutes early on the practices. Verbal wasn't too bad and bio was average. I hope theres a good PS curve!

They tried to make the PS section very complicated, but all it took was simplifying the complex passages/questions into a physics/chem formula and it was pretty straight forward from there. I thought it was very simple but had an extremely rough time with verbal, contrary to many on here.

So, I wasn't given the option to take the trial section. It jumped straight into the MCAT survey. Did anyone else have this experience? People have referred to the section as the way to know scores weren't voided, which makes me a bit worried that there was computer error.
I do have a receipt ## for the exam, is there a number I can call? (the AAMC website is down for some reason right now)

Cool brag.

Anyone have any MCAT dreams/nightmares yet? I had one the other day. Every time I looked at my score, it would drop down a few points. I went from a 26 to a 14. Ugh. Is it May 29th yet?

Anyone else studying now in case they need to retake? I am thinking of staying away from the books to refresh in case in need to retake.

Oh man. I just realised, that's the same day as my anniversary! Maybe I'll focus all of this nervous energy into some sort of grand romantic gesture...

I had a dream that I was out with my buddies at a bar and I checked my score on my iPhone. Needless to say, my score was terrible and some guy mouthed off about it and it turned into a huge bar fight. Remember that scene from anchorman where they all fight? It kinda looked like that.

That feels a bit SDN influenced. 😀

No way man I got finals coming up! Gotta focus on that for the next couple weeks then I'll start thinking about it. Is anyone planning on signing up for a retake before we find out our scores just in case? Best case scenario, you find out your scores rocked, cancel the upcoming test and you wasted money, but you never have to look back at all this garbage.

Nah. This guy was some meathead in an Affliction t-shirt. Hardly the SDN type lol. Plus, I love all the 4/26ers. You guys are by far my favorite people on SDN 🙂

Honestly I'd like to, but I don't think I can mentally take it right now. I need a few weeks off. My family needs me as well. I've basically ignored my kids for the past 4 months and its been amazing to just spend time with them for the past couple of days. I'm just continuing to pray for a miracle on PS at this point. I might look over notes before we get results but nothing major. I'd much prefer to go DO than wait another cycle.

i concur, i think were probably going to be talking in this thread until we all get interviews/accepted.

i kinda feel bad for the 4/27ers because theyre so quiet on their thread..

Before I started coming to SDN, I thought 30+ scores were the norm since all my friends scored 33+. Now I see how much work goes into a 30+ score -_-

It's almost like this delayed release of scores is the last part of the test. The unwritten section that tests if we can survive the agony of being utterly powerless and having to simply wait.

Maybe the typo was on purpose. AAMC could be trying to pick the best distractor answers. Since they know the correct answer, they'll just pick the top three from the 'experimental' and boom - you have a real question.

Has anyone signed up for a retake test date? I was thinking late July or early August. I really want to apply this year. I am going to apply June and just mark that I am retaking the MCAT. I think I am capable of performing better. Anyone have good ideas for study materials? I took all the practice AAMC exams and I studied with EK. Did all EK 1001 physics, chem, orgo and most of verbal. I have the biology EK 101 and only did a couple passages (biology wasn't phasing me too much). I thought the PS section was a killer and I think I under performed on the real MCAT.

I have some old TBR materials that I have not used up. Where can I get good practice exams? I was thinking about doing at least 2 MCAT passages a day and practice full lengths every other weekend.

I will wait until I see my score first. I just checked and found an abundant availability for retake. I don't think much will change in a month. I won't retake in July. If I sign up for retake, it will be in August or September.

Are you OK with DO? If so, I don't think you should be worried. You scored 30 on AAMC 11 for god's sake. Even if we assume you score 4 points below that, you are still within range for DO, assuming your GPA is also within range.

God forbid, if I need to retake, I will only study using TBR for physics and gChem, TPRH ICC for bio, TPRH and AAMC for verbal. On top of that, I would read a pubmed article every day to get familiar with those abstracts and the way they are written.

For now, I won't do much studying except for a little reviewing to maintain the content knowledge I have acquired.

Just out of curiosity, which section gave you the most trouble?

Bio was a killer for me, and I consider myself good in bio.

That's what I'm thinking. There are simply too many mistakes on the questions for it to be a real one.

The structure named did not match the structure drawn and there are atoms missing.

PS was a killer for me. I wish I remember what the passages and questions were so I could study those. I can't even seem to remember most of it. I think it was my nerves and just I felt like it was coming out of left field. I know that I got 2 questions wrong for sure. I would have preferred to have more conceptual physics problems. I dunno. I didn't think verbal and bio were that bad but I was feeling very rushed and pressed for time (I skimmed the last passages for both of those sections). Plus, I had issues with the actual exam itself, like the going back function... I couldn't figure out that you needed to actually double click on the "Question #"... I wasted time flipping through passages in order to go back... it sucked. :-( My top choice is University of Maryland but I am okay with DO schools (but I heard that they can be JUST as competitive as MD schools). My big thing is that I want to stay in the North East, Maryland region.

My GPA is 3.78 Biochemistry major, psychology minor. I graduated in 2007 and have been working mostly research since. I currently work at the National Institutes of Health.

I also think you need to have shadowed DOs and have a LOR from a DO. I had one 5 years ago when I applied but we have not kept in touch at all. :-/ What about you?

If you score a balanced 24 on the mcat you will get in one of the new DO schools. However, with your GPA, a balanced 26 will get you in all DO schools that don't have regional bias. For MD, you need above 30, I think.

I had the same issue regarding the double click function when you review your questions. I couldn't get it to go straight to the marked questions and had to start from passage one and hit next.

I finished the PS with 6 mins to spare, but got so frustratd with the "double click" function and ended up not being able to revisit those questions I wanted to have another look at.

Verbal was OK, but the two last passages along with one detailed passage in the middle threw me off balance.

BS was a total BS. I couldn't have anticipated those passages from what we were exposed to in AAMC FL's. The last ochem passage was very long and took a considerable amount of time to do. I thought I was doing good on timing until I arrived to the final bio passage with only 15 mins left. I skipped it, did the discrete page and returned to it. By the time I was done with it, I had less than 3 mins left. I reviewed my answers to make sure that I didn't leave anything unanswered, but again got frustrated that I couldn't double click and go directly to the marked questions, so I ended up revisiting one random bio passage, did nothing, and submitted my test.

I'm irritated by this test. Bio is my strongest subject and my ass was handed to me on this test. It wasn't that the passages were hard to read as much as it were the way they worded some questions and how many questions had two very possible, equally plausible answers.

Bio was just another verbal test.

I'm applying only DO. My GPA is on the lower end 3.35, so I figured I need 25+ to get me in somewhere. That's 3 points lower than my average on the last 3 AAMC exams.

Does anyone know of anyone who got extra time on the MCAT for a learning disability? I am just curious. Do you think that medical schools would look down on that?

I remember a girl who had severe anxiety posted she was able to take the test over 3 days.

PS/VR/BS each on separate days. Never heard of extra time though.

I think we all get severe anxiety before the MCAT. I was literally unable to sleep for pretty much the entire night before because I had so much adrenaline flooding my system. Still, I'd much rather get it all out of the way in one go rather than get it spread out between 3 days.

Couldn't agree with you more. Felt like I was on a roller coaster ride and I hate roller coasters :scared:
