For those people who took the August MCAT and are now applying for Allopathic/Osteopathic schools. We can discuss secondaries, interviews, and acceptances or even general application questions!

Good luck to all people applying :luck:

Hey guys,

I just received my MCAT scores (10/10/10s). I graduated from Miami University (Ohio) with a 3.62 / 3.53 BCPM. Problem is it took me 5 years because of chicken pox in college and mono the next year. I have written these problems into my personal statement to explain the long time. I also made sure to pick up an extra major (did psychology and biology w/ minor in neuroscience) to make best use of the extra time I had to take. I have really good LORS, and leadership/experience ECs.

I know my stats are pretty average and I really need help deciding where to apply as so far I've only applied to all schools in Ohio and NYMC. I am just not sure where else to add and I really don't want to take another year off (I graduated in May and am currently on my year off school). Any help on where else I can apply would be greatly appreciated!

Last thing - I haven't taken calculus, but I have taken a year of college math (statistical).

Thanks!

I don't think the fact that you took one year of math without calculus should matter much. I don't know much about Florida schools (I'm from California), but have you looked into them?

Although your stats are so to say average, I think you should be able to get in this year with good LORS and EC's. Sorry if i couldn't be of much help for your list of schools. Hopefully somebody else could help. Also, try looking at the MSAR, it will definitely help you out. Good luck!

Reapplicant right here! I guess third time's a charm when it comes to the MCAT (well, at least in my circumstances). My last MCAT score was a 24...but I got a 33 [13 PS, 8 VR (which is low, but my hardest section for some reason..i hope this doesn't hurt me for interviews??), 12 BS]this past August. I just worry about the multiple times I took the test and if that plays a factor on getting interviews. I just don't wanna do this application process again...ESPECIALLY the secondaries!

Good luck to everyone...and I hope the interviews come rolling in for us!

Damn that's an awesome improvement!! I'm sure you will DEF get in somewhere this year.

I am a bit worried about myself. I got a 31 on the MCAT. Hopefully my 3.9 GPA, EC's, and LORs will make up for it. Also, I am graduating in 3 years. What do you guys think about this? Will med schools look down upon it?

First-time (and hopefully only-time) applicant; took the Beast in Pittsburgh. 32T (PS 11, BS 10, VR 11). Ph.D. in hand, undergraduate from Georgetown, post-bacc at Pitt, 2.92 BCPM, 3.5 overall. Very, *very* relieved as of this morning.

Hey guys I need some advice too:

I already submitted 30 secondaries before my score came out. I had a bad April 2006 score and I retook it in August which didn't improve much from last time. Everything improved but verbal.

PS: 12
V: 6
BS: 11
Writing: R
Total: 29R

I have a 3.79 GPA with a 3.71 BCPM and I have a slew of extracurriculars (taught middle school at a different state and was an actor in a couple plays to name some unique ones) and good letters. What do you guys think my chances are?

I think you will be fine🙂

Fall 07/Aug first time MCATer here. Hopefully in a few weeks we will e hearing about our interviews.

First time applicant. Applying here with a 26O... not looking good.. considering my April score was 24O, but I already submitted my AMCAS few weeks ago (status: under review), so I might as well hope for the best...
🙁🙁🙁

Do you think I may still have the slightest chance? I wonder if the secondaries are still worth my time....

You can look here for my brief stats... http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=4262920&postcount=1035

I really hope my enthusiasm, ECs, and international background could compensate for it a little... what do you think..

A friend of mine got in 2 years ago with a 3.6/26. He had so so EC's, but you have a chance. Hope you applied broad, and you might be okay! Don't make excuses, just explain why you would be a good doctor 🙂

Hey guys

Does a R on writing cover up a 6 on verbal =/

I hope my 11 in verbal can offset the N in writing. I hate writing🙁

Slightly, but more emphasis is probably going to be placed on your verbal score. Hey don't worry you can get into schools even with your 6...I've seen some on mdapps.

Yeah, I agree...make sure to apply to a broad range. Also, try applying DO also. If you have confidence in yourself you can get in despite your MCAT score. Keep us updated on how you do...wishin the best :luck:

Things that are wrong with my app:

1. It's late
2. GPA is 3.0 sciGPA is 3.2

Things that are good about my app:
1. 38P (13,13,12) MCAT
2. 3.97 for my last 36 credits at an informal post-bacc

Everything else should be pretty standard... good luck, it should be an interesting application cycle for me

Good luck🙂 🙂

sure... but I think you won't need it 👍 :luck:

Will applying late severely affect our apps? How many spots are taken by now..probably 1/4?

i've heard it's one of the worst things you can do to your app... but there's nothing we can do about it now, right?

I'm a retaker and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on which (if any) other schools I would have a chance at, given that it is October 13. I applied to schools that I thought I had a chance at with my April score. Now I am considering adding an upper tier reach school or two given my new stats. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Guys,

ALthough its true that we would have had a better chance in april to get in, but many of us werent ready at that time. Yes it will be harder to get in now, but nonetheless, a good applicant, regardless of when he/she has applied, will get in.

what about with a 5?

VR: 5
PS: 14

Had most of you submitted your AMCAS prior to hearing about your MCAT score? I just couldn't take that risk cuz I just crammed for the MCAT's through all of July and threw the die.
Is the protocol to actually wait to get the secondaries or do people have a way to start working on those things beforehand. Cuz I'm running on pure panic here and I think I can do all 15 of em with one shot tonight.

Wow that is a really good overall score for just having a 5 in verbal! Was it a misbubble or something?

I hate to break it to you, but I think it will be fairly difficult to get in with a 5 in verbal. Is there any way you could just halt the application process before you dish out a lot of money? I would suggest retaking and applying next year, especially if you were doing significantly better on your practice exams.

But then again, I could be completely wrong. One part of me think you could still get in.

do you mean all 15 secondaries?? B/c that is impossible, if not, the quality of your essays will be sub-par.

What you can do is find out the essay prompts for certain schools before you actually receive their secondary and start working on them. There is a thread here for secondary prompts. Good luck!

umm I think it would be really difficult to do all the secondaries in one night, they are draining (some require more than one essay, etc). Second, you need to submit your primary which takes 4-6 weeks to verify. Some of the secondaries you can do before it is final, and some you have to wait for.

Do you think he will need at least 10 next time? 8 might be acceptable in my opinion - that is avg... maybe, even 7 would be acceptable to some schools... I am sure you will be alright though... Good luck!

I would say an 8 or above is decent in verbal, but that is just my opinion

Do I have a prayer at any of the top ones, and do I even have a fighting chance at the middle ones? Just got my MCATs back last night and I don't know how much they'll help to balance out the mediocre GPA...What are y'alls thought.

That one night thing was hyperbole. I was trying to convey the good sense of creative momentum I'm feeling because I'm in the moment. An entire month down the line, I doubt I'll be this "AMPED!!!." I actually applied to NYU with a deadline in 10/15. The AMCAS guy told me that I just need to submit before 10/15 and that would technically meet the deadline(I submitted today). The problem is that the secondary is due on 11/15, probably 2 weeks before I'm actually verified!! So that one I definitely need to get my hands on.
Is that secondary thread here on the Pre-Allo forum? Sounds like exactly what I'd need.

Also RE Verbal: The grading makes no sense to me. SO far I've seen people with "T" essays score 8 on VR. Then there's me. My room had no clocks and my proctor didn't keep us abreast of times, so naturally I would also mess up on keeping track of time. I ended up just completely skipping 10 entire questions. I got an 11! Does the MCAT release our responses and explanations, because sometimes I wonder what's going on.

I think you are fine! Awesome GPA and MCAT by the way 🙂
I don't think schools would look down upon graduating in three years...rather, I think they would see it as a sign of hard work and dedication!

If I have to retake, can you tell me some tips to improve Physics?
Good luck🙂 🙂

My physics went from an 7 from my previous score to a 13 this August..and the way it did was studying the themes! I honestly think this is the section where you can improve the fastest once you know the general concepts...because the passages test the same concept, but from a different direction. And trust me, I'm no general chemistry/physics nerd!

Here's my MD Thingamajigger

I had my AMCAS and TMDSAS submittred by mid-June and completed my secondaries by late August-mid Sept. I did it early this time around because I did it so late last year...don't know how big of a difference it makes though! Good luck with the secondaries!

Hey thanks for your input! So are you an august MCATer? Good luck on YOUR apps!

Hey guys....

Is a 6 in verbal going to kill me from getting in? I got a R on the essay and everything else is decent/good (other sections, GPA, stuff like that)

Do NOT rush your secondaries. You have an okay GPA and a fine MCAT. You have a good shot at most of the schools you listed.

But unless your application is stellar, a lot rides on the secondaries. It's your one chance to be an individual and set yourself apart from the crowd. I personally found that each secondary took at least a few hours.

IMHO, at this late point in time, a few extra days is well worth having good secondaries to return.

5 and an L ? uphill battle 🙁
I'm not sure why so many folks put so strong a tie between the writing sample and the verbal reasoning. They test entirely different things.

Verbal reasoning is testing your logic, reasoning and reading comprehension skills. Writing sample tests your ability to write out a formal argument.

Having a poor verbal reasoning score doesn't mean you don't have a good command of the English language. It just means you're having problem with critical reading comprehension on the MCAT.

August MCATer all the way...and a reapplicant! I wonder how long it'll take before we hear news about interviews (hopefully!!)

Bringing this thread back to life...

Has anybody heard from any UC's? I received UCSD's secondary but that was before I had my MCAT score. I am assuming I received it b/c I am an undergrad there so don't worry if you haven't received it. When will the UC's come out?!?!

I'm throwing my application into the piles. We'll see what happens!

Good luck everyone 👍

Has anybody heard from any UC's?
I received an invite for UCSF's secondary before my MCAT came out. With my 8 Bio, I have a hunch they regret it now. Applied to all the other UC's and no love yet.

Just out of curiosity, what is your undergrad school?

Hey folks, my AMCAS is being verified right now. Since I received my MCAT score, I wanted to add a few more schools. Is it better to add them now while being reviewed or wait until I am verified and then add them? Thanks for the response.

Yeah I had a similar question. I wanted to switch a school.

By the By, I was surprised today to find the Boston U. Secondary invite because I thought schools didn't know you were applying til you got reviewed. So how does it work? You submit and all the schools you paid for are automatically notified, but with no actual creds supplied? Hmm. So what if I send in my BU secondary before my AMCAS gets reviewed?? This process is so weird...and for no good reason.

Hey I was wondering if anyone had a handy dandy website or list of NON-Rolling schools with deadlines AFTER 10/15. I figure I have a better chance there than at rolling schools.

And not to fear, I will spend time on the secondaries. If I get one secondary a week, I'll be golden.

I remember it took me a few weeks to get verified...once I was processed, I wanted to add a few schools, and I got the secondary the next day. I think (but don't quote me on it), that it won't hurt you either way before or after verification.
