Registration opens up sometime today so I thought I'd go ahead and make this thread. Anyone else taking it in August?

Took it today! I want to say... it was pretty tough. I def had a lot of questions where I broke it down to two and had to choose the best answer. Just want to start off by saying that my Kaplan averages were around 495 (please don't judge, I studied A LOT and these kinds of tests don't come natural to me). I just had to get this test over with, my brain is literally fried and had to just try my best, and honestly glad that I did! Feel pretty good about it. Tougher than the AAMC FL thought. Don't be discourage about the Kaplan results because the real thing was wayyyy easier and understandable. I don't believe that everyone gets the same test...

C/P: Only the tiniest bit of physics.. Odd, or I just didn't notice that it was physics. ALOT of simple Gen Chem, felt really good about this section. This is usually my highest scored subjects, the highest on Kaplan that I've gotten was a 125, but honestly thought I got around a 125 - 128 on it. Oh and I would def take the time to remember equations, there was defiantly a plentiful on mine, but luckily they were simple and easy to do just took some time. Finished on time though!
Cars: I read on the previous notes about how people didn't finish on time so it's really smart to just take a look at the clock and only use about 10 mins per passage. I did that and finished with about 3 minutes left to go back. I did receive a certain passage that was talked about on here so I was really shocked on why it was being repeated. But anyways, my highest on Kaplan was a 123, hoping I got at least that or higher would be great. I'm just not the best at CARS so please don't judge my scores.
B/BC: Super heavy on biochem! Like woh, I haven't taken the class yet, but I learned all through the Kaplan book and was enrolled in the Fundamental thing that literally teaches biochemistry like a class. VERY helpful to those who are having trouble. Had to guess on most, and second guessed because that's just how I test... I have really bad test anxiety. Highest on Kaplan, 124, I think I made higher.
P/S: UGH, like I'm a psych minor, have taken multiple UPPER level classes and felt like this section has nothing to do with the concept of psychology. It's all about data analysis, but what about using the concept and using it to your advantage to attack problems and experiments? Nope. Nothing. I would still take the time to review the terms because there were simple easy questions but then the passage questions are like.. wtf? I felt like they were more like 'how would you interpret this situation'.. like what? I remember reading this one questions where I knew exactly what it was talking about but all the options were right? Like... what? Highest 122 on Kaplan, but have made 126 on other company's tests. I don't even know with this section.

Anyways.. Glad it's over. I'm glad I can say that I did my best...
Hope this helps and good luck to those taking it in the future!

Kaplan is not really a good indicator. You probably did fine. I went from taking Kaplan to taking next step Fl exams and saw a 7 point invrease. I know people who had a 10 point increase on the real thing.

Hopefully I'll be one of those people :highfive:

Thank you all for sharing what you guys went through today and yesterday.
Would you guys do anything differently for the last 2 weeks, knowing how the MCAT actually is?

I also wanted to post my way of attacking CARS, it defiantly increased my score and time management. May or may not work for you

Since it's hard for me to remember what I just read and reading the whole passage just makes me way more distracted and my mind gets all messed up...
I started to find my own way of attacking this section by reading the first and highlighting a few key words of each paragraph trying to get the general gist of it. Then read the question, and usually it doesn't take time to go back to the passage and read the paragraph the question was on and that helps me understand and put the pieces of what the author is talking about.
Brought my CORRECT percentage from a 30 to a 60 by the end!! Hopefully this was in my favor today haha CARS has always been the most difficult for me!

But maybe it'll work for you! Try it and let me know if it works for you as well!

To be honest the thing I was worried about most when I left the testing center wasn't "what's my score going to be?"

It was "I did in fact click to have it scored, right? I didn't accidentally click void?" I was so plastered mentally that I wasn't even sure if I clicked the right button. I clicked the top one so I'm pretty sure that's the score button.
Yoo me too!! By the time I got to the last page I was so done ... I clicked the top button in a second and pressed confirm or whatever to go to the next page... And I exited the room with massive paranoia LOL

It's the top button right???

Wrote the MCAT today. For p/s I felt uncertain about a lot of questions due to not covering some of the topic in depth during my review and still missing definition to some terms. (I went by the outline.) It's usually my best section during practice FL.... Anyone else?

The anxiety is so real...My weakness is content, I just feel like I don't know everything. I can reason my way through things pretty well, but I am terrified of not knowing enough, especially for the really random detailed questions.
I keep going back over content books and reading things afresh....

Looking through the threat on August 6th test takers highlights similar feelings to August 5th test takers - CARS was either manageable or overly difficult. I felt my test had a manageable CARS section but difficult Psych/Soc and I've had other people agree on this and then the vice versa so yes...clearly various tests. I personally always felt that if you felt like you bombed a section but were doing well on average in your FL (did well in the AAMC FL/OG/QPACK) and generally felt confident in that section before the test...it's made to be hard...i'tll be curved...if anything you are LUCKY its hard because the pre-determined curve is GENEROUS. Now on the flipside if you get an easy section then all of a sudden its not so great - because I swear even though I read questions and knew the answers instantly I caught myself picking wrong stuff by accident and if this happens to you then you can see how each point all of a sudden starts to matter more and there's less leeway than if your section had been hard.

So while I thought my CARS section wasn't too bad, and yes it makes me feel not so crappy about it because its always been the section that was most important for my schools and my weakest, I acknowledge that it was easier and thus the curve is harsh meaning if I actually didn't get as many as I thought right I will be beat down to the ground.

With that said I want to also acknowledge something and maybe this differs but having written the MCAT a few times (twice last year) and once this year (Canadian schools except maybe 1 don't care much the # of times you write, a good chunk take best score even) but my general experience with CARS has been that the passages have become more readable with the caveat that now the questions are harder and more murky (and this was a consistent theme with some greater % of harder questions one test to the next). You also have to remember some of those AAMC QPACK passages are from old test released easily >10 years ago or tested years ago. They must realize that those of us who studied and grew up within the last lets say 10 years give or take will not have the same vocabulary and terminology as someone from like 1700s so there is no point to confuse the reader so they can't even tackle a question - rather it makes more sense to make passages understandable but the questions difficult because all the premises and conclusions can be attained from the passage.

Thats my 2 cents on the topic though, but yes...30 days and counting :bang:

Would you guys do anything differently for the last 2 weeks, knowing how the MCAT actually is?

Things I'm happy I did:
EK FL were IMO the most representative. Very glad I did those. Glance at topics in the AAMC outline and revisit ones that you are vaguely familiar with.

Things I wish:
Practice reading longer passages under times conditions. Although, I'm saying this because my CARS section felt longer and there have been different opinion on this, but I practiced reading the sections for weeks in advanced and was able to finish each passage (with questions) in 8.5-9.5 min under timed conditions with pretty good accuracy. That's what I'll be doing for the next month IN CASE I happen to have bombed it

Can I use ear plugs to avoid distraction by noise? Am I allowed to wear watch?

You can bring ear plugs that have no strings on em, but I would call and ask if the testing center had noise blocking headphones (mine did and I loved them). And I'm pretty certain no watches allowed

Which EK FL in specific? Took EK 1 and 4 and am debating whether or not it's worth it to spend $100 on the other 2.

Did anyone find the khan academy passages (chem/phys, psych/soci, bio) and discrete questions helped for the actual test?

Im taking a NS exam and I noticed that both times I have taken one I do not finish the P/C section. Im always about a passage off. Does anyone else experience that? Are the passages extra long or should I start stepping up my game/ skimming the passage more instead of reading?

I found NS passages much longer. I took NS 1-3 and found myself having to rush towards the end. Actual MCAT had maybe 1 longish passage but the rest were relatively short and timing wasn't an issue. So I wouldn't be concerned

This makes me feel better 🙂. Thank you!

I used Khan Bio and thought it was helpful. I mainly picked the ones with graphs and data to analyze, as many sources lacked in that area and it was pretty emphasized. (For some reason, it wasn't too emphasized on mine, although there definitely was still some).

Not to be a downer but you might still wanna work on stepping up your game because we all have different exams. I usually finish p/s with 20-30 min to spare but on the actual exam it was so dense that I was there the whole time. Get more confident in this section so if you get thrown curveballs like I did then you can handle it.

Yeah I also used Khan academy for bio and I was super happy I skimmed through and worked through several hard experimental passages. On my exam there was only a few passages that were experimental but I was so happy I was able to approach it. The rest of the khan academy sections are waaayyyyyy harder than the actual exam IMO. LOL the p/s section tried to make me calculate t tests and chi squared 😆

Well, after some reflection and looking things up I now know for a fact that I missed at least 4 content questions on B/B, and that's not even counting the research passages. Ugh. I've been hearing of people who miss 3-5 questions and still manage a 131 so hopefully I don't tank too badly.

Does anyone else think it's dumb that they don't just give preliminary scores to everyone? I think that should be standard practice for the new MCAT. I'd like a general idea of what to expect when my actual score comes out

 Lol that's exactly what I did. Just so fried that I clicked the top button and then hit next in the space of about 1 second.

If you click void, there'd probably be something pop up that asks "are you sure?" At least, so my reasoning goes.

Haha idk how you guys did that. I literally counted 5 seconds in my head before even clicking the option to score so that I wouldn't mess up

That's just about where I'm at right now. That bio/biochem section didn't agree with me. Frustrated about the questions I know I missed, hoping for a little bit of luck with the curve and some of the ones I guessed on...really wishing there was a preliminary score.

Anyone else who took it yesterday, what did you guys think?

I know, I feel totally dumb for not taking a bit more time to thoroughly read the option I was clicking. I know I clicked the one on top though, and I'm pretty sure that's the score option based on what I remember from the AAMC FL and the test itself.

It was hard! Some of those questions.. I was just like "when did I learn this?" And if I recall it was either the 3rd or 4th passage that was just an absolute beast. Wish I could describe it in more detail but it was incredibly hard.

This is from the Kaplan 2015 Quicksheets. Is there an error in the optics equation? Should be 1/f = 2/r ?

Let me know how that goes, good luck! Just finished EK FL 2...did worse.

EK FL 1 scores: 53%, 70%, 51%, 76% Total 62%
EK FL 2 scores: 51%, 60%, 69%, 56% Total 59%

I am wildly inconsistent. C/P is luck of guessing that's why I'm staying at ~50% but otherwise the other sections are just bleh.

Will be reviewing tomorrow. AAMC FL this weekend folks.
Don't feel bad about EK's C/P - they're known to be harder than AAMC stuff. I did the AAMC QPacks and got almost 80% on C/P. They make you think a lot though, which is good.

Took it yesterday and then slept for like 12 hours!!

Here's my opinion, if any of the later August test people are interested...

C/P - I thought this was easier than the practice AAMC test personally. There was one concept/equation that I didn't really go over that was on there in a few questions, so that annoyed me! But besides those, I felt like this section was not bad at all. And although the timing on this section is always the closest for me, I finished with a few minutes to spare, whereas in the AAMC FL I just barely finished the last question in time.

CARS - There were no killer passages, which was great! I don't think they were any longer than in the AAMC FL, gauging on the time it took me to read them. I typically can read them in about 3 minutes and then spend 7 minutes on the questions, and I was right on target for that. I got a little behind on one towards the end so I had to do the last 2 or 3 in like 8 or 9 minutes, which was okay, but that was the only speed bump for me. I would say that instead of killer passages, there were more killer questions. Not hard to comprehend, but took way longer than usual to answer. Definitely more difficult than the AAMC FL, but that CARS section was insanely easy so I would have been shocked if the real thing was that simple.

B/B - I would say overall this was on par with the AAMC FL. The AAMC FL had a good balance of like medium difficulty passages in my opinion, whereas I felt like this real MCAT had more easy passages as well as a few that were medium, and then (maybe to make up for the easy ones) like 2 or so that were closer to the killer side for me. But I think that the difficulty balanced out to about the AAMC FL difficulty, maybe a little more difficult but not unmanageable.

P/S - This section along with CARS is normally my easiest section (psychology and neuroscience major, so I had a bit of a head start), but this section was more difficult for me than I've ever found a practice test to be. I found it harder for me than the AAMC FL or any of the TPR practice tests. I think it has more to do with the fact that it was heavier on sociology than I am used to (it felt like 50/50 almost), and there were some terms that I couldn't remember. I don't think I did poorly, but I felt the least consistent in this section than the others compared to the way I felt during practice tests... It is also so hard to get through this section regularly, but even worse on the real thing because I am SO fatigued at this point, plus I took it for granted a little going in (got myself in the mindset that it would be a total breeze), AND I was just DYING to be done!! So I'm not sure if this section was actually harder than the AAMC FL, or if it was just different, and so for me it happened to be harder.

Anyways, that is my opinion of the test for anyone who is interested! I really wish I could see my scores now! These next several weeks will be a little torturous!! I'm not planning on applying until next cycle though, I just wanted to get this test out of the way!

Is anyone else here applying next cycle? Or are most people just waiting for scores to send in for this cycle?

Also, it felt SO INCREDIBLY AMAZING to close all the windows and tabs on my laptop that were all MCAT study related! And to stack up all my TPR books and notebooks and flashcards into the corner! No more Princeton Dashboard or Khan Academy or random Wikipedia pages!! NO MORE MCAT STUDYING!!!... Or in the very worst case, no more studying for at least 5 months hahaha! Crossing my fingers though!

Thoughts...

1. C/P: Probably one of the easiest C/P sections I've seen, went through it pretty fast but am worried I made mistakes. Finished with about 40 minutes left to review over answers. Didn't test my weak areas of physics fortunately.

2. CARS: First passage was pretty straightforward and all of them weren't too bad to read in terms of interest. That being said, I thought the questions were pretty confusing (more like SAT Lit to be honest than normal MCAT Verbal) and a few passages in the middle I just brute forced so I could get back to them at the end carefully. Finished with 30 minutes to spare and I just carefully went through everything and changed things to answers after re-reading passages so hopefully that was okay but it also meant I didn't have a good gauge on number guessed.

3. B/B: Alright. I don't know why a lot of people have been saying this was an easy section. To me, this was really tricky and there were a few questions that really tripped me up with regards to them expecting some sort of weird discrete information from us. I major in this subject and find experimental passages to be a breeze since I have a lot of research experience and my undergrad is really strong, but I feel like they really did kind of a half assed job with the whole Mol Bio/Physio part of this exam to where it's like um... this is really shadily written, the question you're asking. So I don't know hopefully the curve is good on this but it definitely wasn't as easy as everyone says it was... and I got a 98% on the B/B of AAMC FL. Finished with about 50 minutes to review but I'm freaking out I made a lot of dumb mistakes.

4. P/S: This was fine. I was really worried I would come into a whole bunch of random vocab words but that didn't happen. I recognized every word on the test. Thought it was interesting how more analytical it was than I thought it would be. Some things were also a bit shady in terms of the questions asked but it wasn't that bad. Finished with about an hour to go over things over and over so hopefully I didn't make as many dumb mistakes as I did on AAMC FL.

You are either the flash or are a professional speed reader...

just took my first EK exam... WHATTT was thattt!?

I have taken TPR exams 1-3 and didn't think they were that bad. But after doing EK 3 today, I am a bit scared. I felt that the Chem/Physics section was very convoluted and the verbal was a bit tricky. Did anyone else feel the same?

Like I said. Alot of "feedback" from the previous test is going to sound very holier than thou. People will say it was easy or basic or the simplest thing they've seen since high school.

Everyone just study, take you're practice tests and you won't regret it. Don't skimp out on your studies because of someone else's review. We're all different.

Like honestly who finishes a section with an hour or even fifty mins left to review it? :wtf:

That's just bragging and can only cause one of two things:
1) People study less because you say it was too easy
2) People who don't feel like they know the section go into panic overdrive because there are curve-setters who make them feel inept. This results in immediate panic during test day when they see a semi-ambiguous question that they feel they should know

Smh. Some people.

@centillion

Finishing the CARS section with 30 minutes to spare? Are you human? Or do you not read the whole passage? I'd say I read at an average speed 4-5min per passage, and unless I randomly bubbled most of my answers there is no way I would have 30min to spare. I had to really rush the last two passages.

I've got a hunch SDN is just being SDN here.

I have taken TPR exams 1-3 and didn't think they were that bad. But after doing EK 3 today, I am a bit scared. I felt that the Chem/Physics section was very convoluted and the verbal was a bit tricky. Did anyone else feel the same?
I took EK 4 and wasn't a fan. Verbal seemed really hard and I personally did not understand their reasoning on some questions. The science sections were hard too and I felt the same way about their solutions. I'm really hoping the AAMC test that I'm taking this weekend is better.

All you people who are pissed and butthurt about others reading fast or saying it was easy need to calm down. Everyone's not out to get you or make you feel inferior.
Some people just read quickly or find it easy to quickly and intuitively select answers and then go back over it at the end.
Sheesh.

Lol no one is butthurt. I'm just saying when they say something like that, they aren't accomplishing anything but validating their intellect. They want us to tell them that they are smart. The fact is people come here for advice on how to approach something, how to tackle a section, what to be vigilant of, how to tailor their studies etc. Instead these people soapbox about how they finished a section in 3omins then reviewed for an hour but are still uneasy about their performance (lmao).

None of that is constructive. It just makes other people more nervous! Which helps no one with their preparation. Personally, it doesn't help me that you had an hour to review a section.

People can and have given post-MCAT reviews that do not give off a vibe of superiority but rather constructive and helpful advice that benefit everyone on the thread.
Anyways congrats to those who finished each section in under 4ominutes i guess.
