The Official August 2015 MCAT Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@StudyLater -I wonder if the sample population of your observational study was representative enough. Self serving bias is another possibility. And oh-maybe it was a mere correlation (moderating variable).

I looked at the percentile thread- a 127 in CARS is apparently an 81%, which means we have to get 43/53 on CARS. Is this correct? I'm not sure if the people who submitted their scores reported the percentage or the percentile. Can someone confirm please?

Looking at this, a 127 on CARS is the 81st percentile, not the actual percentage correct. You'd probably need low 70s in terms of actual percent to get it, which is a bit better.

I didn't understand a word you just ****ing said.

I feel really ready for Saturday.

That sounds like total horse****. Link me to what you're talking about.

Sections are 118-132. Not sure about your math but if you're extrapolating an 11 on the old one would be a 128 on the new one, no?

Looking at the "Old to New Subscores" section from mcatjelly's conversion tables I linked to above, getting a 127 on CARS would require one to score around the 81st percentile, which is roughly equivalent to right below a 10 on the old exam. Looking at the "Old Subscore Conversions," a 10 on Verbal was at least 75.28% correct, so I imagine that, approximately, getting say ~73-74% correct would correspond to a 127.

@james11 - thanks man
Totally, @#$@# happend and I couldn't get to my practice test until 12pm and the library closes early today. Is it a HUGE deal if I just take it Sunday from 1- 8pm? I know not totally real timing but its better than falling behind in the schedule.
I'm sure it's no reason to beat myself down and be all nuerotic about it....I know the next 5-6 practice tests will be right on time so I'm sure the practice and endurance will transfer over..! 🙂

This is assuming the percent to percentile conversions are relatively the same, which....we don't know.

I thought they didn't offer 12pm exams anymore? If they still do I'm gonna be ****ing pissed. I suck at mornings and thought there wasn't any other option.

Oh yeah, for sure! Just saying that it seems unlikely that 81% correct would only get you a 127...or at least I hope so.

Agreed. 81% is doing very well. They're not exactly asking simple **** like, "What did Michael say to Jane in the second sentence of the third paragraph?"

Thoughts on EK4? IMO: CARS passages seemed okay, questions/answer choices a bit ambiguous... Science Sections seemed right on, and besides not having "one-question-per-page" to be pretty representative.

Thoughts? Opinions on CARS?

Of course, test starts at 7:30am - 8:00am.
that comment was directed for practice test only

Late to the party...
is there a consensus on how to interpret the AAMC full length test scores or...is it mostly to get a feel of the exam?

Check Xenith's thread on this board.

Ah. Why not do it same time?

I felt their bio was way too content recall than interpretation of the passages, I remember one entire passage that had not even a single question relating back to the passage

So when light that has an amount of energy greater than that needed to push an electron to the next level, will it reflect away or will its energy be partially absorbed just enough to propel the electron to the next level?

Basically I wanna know what happens when light with a greater amount of energy than the electron needs hits said electron. I know in metals the extra energy just becomes KE of the electron, but what about something that isn't a metal?

Got this in my notes:
"if photon doesn't have the exact amount of energy required, the photon is reflected away"
True, untrue, not entirely true?

Tomorrow is Sunday. This mean that the places to take the test open later and don't stay open long enough.

@#$# happend and I didn't seem to get it together enough to start the test today in the morning.

I don't want to screw up the testing schedule by skipping a day which will push back other days, for future test.

The best thing is to take the test tomorrow btw 1-8pm when the quiet spot is open. I don't have any quiet spot / empty spot in my apt to take the test. I just needed some validation that 1 - 8pm is still good enough for one of the practice test, and the concentration practice will certainly help.

No 24h university libraries?

lol half of my university libraries are closed on saturdays and sundays and the other half open 12-6, 1-5, 12-5, etc... lol I literally don't get anything done on the weekends mostly for this reason

yes exactly, like who in the world who is taking the MCAT willbegin their studies at 12pm and end at 5pm. totally cat litter!

No 24h university libraries?

not here

I have already postoned the practice test from fri --> saturday. there is a small office in my apartment complex with a computer in front of it. it's a tiny cramped space and etc, but it's open (I have a key) so I guess i'll just take my test there from 7:30 am - end.

It's not comfortable etc but it's way better than skipping or messing up the schedule, right? I feel very anxious even though it's likely no big deal.

I doubt the testing room will be particularly comfortable. I just hope it's not too cramped.

Your friend is a single mother in need of a quiet space for her MCAT studies. She asks you if she can borrow your key to the small office in your apartment complex, which is only available to tenants. What do you do?

Hello everyone, I just took my AAMC FL today and received the following scores: 66%/91%/71%/86%. I'm registered for the exam next week and was wondering if anyone had any advice/recommendations for me, particularly in improving the abysmal C/P & B/B scores... Would appreciate any help in this regard.

Thanks. Best of luck to everyone with exam preparations! We're in the home stretch- hopefully we can maximize these last few days

Finished AAMC FL, received 64%/92%/75%/88%. My last week of review will be going over the FL, Q-Packs, Quicksheets, and Khan. I'm also going to hit my weak areas in chem/physics hard since that always seems to be my worst section. Any advice?

I keep imagining rolling around in soft green grass the moment I walk out of that test center. I am actually getting excited just to get it done and over with.

Geez, that's taking it a bit too far...

Seriously. I was reading it like "wtf seriously guys, I don't need this"

This is seriously how it is. I reached the point where I was just ready to be done, so I took it, felt like I gave my best performance and haven't really super worried about it since. It's so much freedom

Kaplan says we dont need to know too much about the urea cycle. Is this true?

What should I really know about it?

Probably just that it's the mechanism for the body to clear excess nitrogen without causing a buildup of toxic ammonia, that glutamine/glutamate is involved... couple of key details like this

This. Except substitute "soft green grass" with "an indoor carpet because all we've got outside is rocks and dirt."

Classes start tomorrow, so today I'm gonna work in NS FL #3 as my last practice exam before testing day.

Is anyone else testing in Savannah?

Hey I have taken a couple practice tests and plan on taking my full AAMC tmrw. If you've taken the exam or plan to take it, do you think these scores are in a decent range if I want to get 510+?

My practice test scores are

TPR1: 507
TPR2: 506
NS with new scale
1: 510
2: 508
3:511

I have been searching endlessly to see how these NS scores would relate to my level of preparedness for the real deal. I know TPR is supposed to be a little harder than the real thing. Any advice would be appreciated!!

So a few more days for me before the MCAT on Friday. I'm doing C/P and B/B passages today. Classes also start tomorrow! I'm torn between doing EK 4 FL (to get in the testing mode but it takes a full day to do and another to go over it) OR reviewing more content (like skimming through all the books again, reviewing quicksheets, and going over index cards) before Friday. What are you guys planning to do these last few days? Or if you've taken it already, what did you do on your last few days before the actual MCAT?

Your scores are better than mine and I'm confident about getting 510+. See how you do on the AAMC FL.

I would say yes. I'm just BARELY ahead of you in terms of practice test scores (507/507/508 TPR; 515/511/515 NS) and I feel pretty good about scoring north of 515, knock on wood. To be honest I'm shooting for 520+ insofar as one can "shoot for" such a score. I got a 90% on my AAMC fyi if you want a reference point for your score tomorrow.
