If you've taken a free practice CASPer SIM test and/or a paid CASPer SIM test and received your percentile score, please use this thread to post your results.

With CASPer being implemented at NYMC this year and optional at Rutgers, and very little known about how the test is actually scored, I thought it would be helpful for us hopefuls to see if those who score poorly on the CASPer SIM test and likely the real CASPer test are still receiving interview invites.

I'll start. I did the free sample test on 10/13. Percentile Score Report: 67.3%

Doing the real CASPer in Nov!!!

I took the real CASPer earlier today (yesterday?) and I'd like to know how long it takes to get your score.

This is from a med student at Mac (where CASPer was first used and marked) on the thread "Official Casper Sim Score Thread" on premed101.com :

"Don't bother with this

A 4 station casper test is not reliable

It is also not ethical for these "former CASPer assessors" to now be using that as a credential to make money off people

There is literally no admission process to be a CASPer assessor - and I won't say more than that as we're not supposed to talk about the process very much - but please do not think of that as a credential. And even if they did do it, you have no way of proving it."

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I took the real test this weekend, and now understand why you can't really prepare for it.

And yes, you never get your score.

Okay, but when will NYMC get my score?

I took mine 9/16? and my portal still doesn't reflect that they have my score yet. You might get a better timeframe if you look at the specific NYMC thread

But my understanding is that I am already under review with the school since 9/22 (w/o Casper score)

Thanks. I can't even log into the NYMC portal right now for some dumb reason. The password they gave me isn't working.

I have never been able to log in using the portal link. But I am able to when I hit cancel on the portal and it brings me to their website. I then click on Secondary Application and scroll down to check status and that usually works for me

Lol. Omg.

Well to be fair, there's also another first year Mac med student on the same board (premed101.com) that swears CASPer SIM is the reason they got an interview at McMaster. Besides, I'm not here to get into a discussion of ethics of these tests. If you're thinking 4 station is not reliable, they also have full length tests for purchase with score reports ( https://www.caspersim.com/buy )

CASPer is a SJT and there is evidence that learning how to "fake" your answers leads to decreased validity of the test... In order words, with the right practice and training, you can PREPARE for it.

Anyhow, no more thread hijacking please. This thread is to share CASPer SIM scores ... If you took the sample test or one of the full length tests ( https://www.caspersim )and got your score please feel free to share!

Haha oh man, condescendingly telling people exactly what to post on your thread when they're all discussing the thread topic, you're going to fit in real well here.

Hi,

I wasn't being condescending so if that's how my post came across then I apologize.

I welcome discussion around the thread topic which is CASPer SIM scores but telling me not to bother with this and that it's unethical is not "discussing the thread topic".

I ended up doing a full length CASPer SIM test and got my score report back. Overall: 75.8 with a breakdown of my performance in key areas.

Wow, only 3 of those score ranges managed NOT to include all possible scores (low, borderline, and high performance). Kind of a useless test, no? Heck, the first bar in the bottom section covers more than 50% of the total possible score range...what the hell is the use of that?

Can someone explain what the heck this is.

From NYMC website:

"CASPer™is a computer-based situational judgment test designed to evaluate core personal characteristics considered essential for students to be successful in medical school and ultimately, as practicing physicians. Some of these include professionalism, ethical grounding, empathy, compassion, and cultural sensitivity."

So like...is this gonna a new thing in med school applications? What prompted someone to make this test and apply it to med school admissions? This is so strange...

If it is that'd be a tragedy because it doesn't do anything like that. It's super subjective and the only thing it really measures is the WPM you type. People who devise these things *cough* McMaster *cough* love throwing around the word "objective" for things that are totally subjective like interviews, MMIs, and this casper test, which is basically an online MMI.

I think there's a misconception of what CASPer really measures because of how it's marketed, both by Altus Assessments and CASPer prep courses.

There's a generally accepted code of conduct for professionals in the real world. From the answers I've graded, it's quite apparent many applicants either don't understand or seem to care about it. Or they got caught completely unprepared, because the official materials given by schools and Altus are purposely ambiguous.

There's multiple stake holders around every issue. Making the 'right call' might be worth a few points depending on who grades your question (the subjective part). Articulating the different points of view will get points from everyone (the objective part).

Talking with other graders and seeing what they would give, I'd say answers generally fit into similar bands. Yes not as precise as a multiple-choice quiz, but a reasonable compromise for efficiency? I'd say so.

For me, the problem with CASPer is that there just isn't enough time to really talk about the multiple sides of an issue. I mean, you have 5 minutes to answer three questions. There's no time to think. Especially on the questions that are supposed to be about self-reflection. They're like "you have 20 seconds to think of a time when you had to change your mind about something" and it's just too vague of a prompt for you to think of something that can actually be applied to the questions they ask you about it. (Plus, by the time you're on your tenth rapid-fire hypothetical moral dilemma in a row, it's hard to care anymore.)

With only 5 mins per section to type your answers, there isn't enough time for most applicants to articulate different points of view. It's better to focus on making sure you do a thorough job answering the questions and providing support rather than trying to do a less than decent job at exploring differing the viewpoints .

Our expertise in MMI and CASPer is unrivaled. Our assessors have worked directly with Harold Reiter and other members of the pilot team. We are very familiar with how this test is scored. At the end of the day, CASPer is a test designed to select for personal and professional characteristics and recent evidence suggests that in the case of the MMIs it is more reliable to ask candidates to recall than to imagine. We believe this data can be extrapolated to CASPer as well.

I did forms #4-6 and found them helpful to prepare for CASPer. Layout and format was very similar to the real test. Content was also representative.

My Casper sim scores were:

#4 = 58 %
#5 = 67 %
#6 = 79 %

I'm not sure what I ended up getting on the real test but I ultimately received an interview and subsequent admission from NYMC! 🙂
