The Official June 13, 2014 MCAT Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
PS: Even more calculation heavy than the one from 3/22. I think this was the most calculation-heavy PS I've ever seen. Even more than the PS from GS tests. I ran out of time while doing the last passage. Had to make a few guesses. I got 12 on PS last time.
Expected: 10~11

VR
: First few passages were very interesting + easy to comprehend. No idea how I did it as usual. Got 6 on it last time.
Expected: 6~8

BS
: Again, I ran out of time for this section. There were 3 LOOOOOOOOOOONG passages with complex data. I got 12 on this section last time..
Expected: 10~11

I felt quite miserable after the exam. Even though post-exam feelings do not tell you anything about the scores you will get (I thought I failed PS and BS for 3/22 MCAT but got 12 on both), I think I did worse than I did on 3/22... I just hope that it will turn out to be exactly the opposite...

I guess i will get this started

AAMC Avg - 39.6 ~ 13/13/14
Post test predictions - 35+ ~ 12/??/13

PS - was a little daunting at first. The first passage had one question that i just couldn't get for the life of me, although I'm sure it wasn't too difficult. The PS got better as it went on. I would say it was slightly above AAMC difficulty. There was a lame question that required you to know a specific acronym that I've never seen before. The answer was uncalculatable if you didn't know it.

VR - Hardest part of the test by far. I was say 5/7 passages were AAMC difficulty with one pretty hard and one more wtf-worthy. I thought i understood the passage but when i got to the questions i was like "guess i missed the whole point". This is the most important section for me so kinda bummed it was this hard. Will have to retake if its below 11.

BS - I would say similar to AAMC 11 with one or two ebola-like passages. The hardest part of this were the standalones which required some pretty specific knowledge. I think this section was the easiest of the three.

Trial - Biochem - At first i was like "wtf". But i think with some knowledge of biochem concepts and techniques they wouldn't have been too difficult. Too bad my knowledge is cursory at best. The standalones were questions you would expect to find in the BS section of the current MCAT

I agree that some of the PS questions were hard. I actually thought verbal wasn't too bad besides one passage, but I got destroyed by the length of those bio passages.

Hope we got lucky.. Even though it's Friday the 13th and my test was on the 13th floor LOL

I didn't find a problem with Bio length at all. I finished with plenty of time to spare (even more so than most aamc)

Going to have to agree with you on the BS section. I came out of the test so depressed. I feel that I honestly got around a 6 or 7.

PS - Ridiculous! Maybe it just hit on a lot of my weak points, but I flat out ran out of time and had to guess on like 4. I'm usually solidly confident in this section, and this one shook me up. It sucked. And I specifically remember the acronym you're referring to...what the heck.

VR - Surprisingly easy, in my opinion. Felt pretty good about it.

BS - Felt pretty good about this as well. No big surprises, used all the time, but felt solid on most of the answers, guessed on one that I can remember.

Don't know and don't care to predict my score. Sometimes I feel awful about a section and do great, sometimes I feel great and do awful. Overall, I'm super worried about PS, don't feel good about it, feel solid enough in the last two sections. I just hope I didn't bomb PS.....
We'll see in a month. It's over!

that seemed way too easy... post test feeling is 33+. problem is on easy verbal sections (ie AAMC #10, in which 36/40 = 11), the scale is unforgiving. but of the 2 i had to guess on, 1 i got right (in bio, where i always need it more) and missed the other (that physical sciences section that had the weird unit). sadly, i guessed it right the first time and changed it because it seemed too easy to guess the unit meant that. whatever, i will say, that went surprising well.

PS - Calculation heavy, but fair. Some very difficult questions but overall similar to what you would see on practice AAMCs.

There was a lame question that required you to know a specific acronym that I've never seen before. The answer was uncalculatable if you didn't know it.

Can you PM me which question and Acronym this was in reference to?

VR - VERY LONG. One of the passages I didn't even get to, and had to answer all of the questions blindly. This has never happened during the AAMC's for me. Also one of the passages I thought I had a strong understanding of, but when answering questions, I apparently missed the main purpose entirely. In my opinion this was undoubtedly the hardest section of the test.

BS - Looooong passages, but well rounded. I took the 3/22 test which was extremely Microbio heavy, but this had a much wider range of topics. Most of the free standing were random trivia. One passage in particular was VERY hard to follow, but it was doable.

I agree, the PS section was ridiculous. The 1st 2 passages were nothing I've ever seen but as it went on it got better.

Verbal had more passages that were more interesting to read which made the questions easier to comprehend.

BS was difficult but nothing like AAMC 11. Overall I thought it was easier than 11

Hi,

So correct me if I am wrong but the Bio passages that were "lengthy" didn't require you do read EVERY SINGLE WORD like you do in verbal right? I mean you can extrapolate information from them which helps with the questions?

I won't post a predicted score BC I honestly don't know and not up to try, but I can state how I felt about the sections:
PS: out of the three, I didn't think it was that bad.....I guess it was calc heavy...., but I thought it was more manip. of equations..idk. Guessed on the first discrete...for some reason I could not figure it out...the highest I've ever had on PS is 12 ..so I guess we'll see?

VR: ..... no words. VR has always been my weakest, and I started running out of time to the point that I had to sort of guess on the last two...I'm glad at least some of you guys feel the same about VR...BC maybe it's the same for many more

BS: idk...usually I'm fine with BS...but some of the pssg took too much of my time...didn't run out, but I was unsure about a good handful.. though I thought the last pssg I had was the most straightforward of them all...discrete weren't that bad either. I might have actually preferred more Orgo than Bio...

The optional trial at the end..well I tried...had time to spare but a lot of things were familiar from my AP psych and sociology college course..wish I had biochem..

In all, I am still in discontent and worried, but I did my best and I'm glad it is over with.

PS section - Out of this world difficult (praying to salvage an 8 maybe?)

VR - One of the easier sections I've encountered out of all the AAMC exams I took

BS - slightly more challenging than average, REALLY time consuming passages with a few bogus questions

PS - This is usually my strongest section. Those first two or so passages were like ... I think I spent good 20 mins on the first two passages. It got a little easier after until in came across that STUPID acronym question (WTFFFFFF). Still have no idea what the hell it meant so I just guessed and moved on. Overall definitely harder than any of the AAMC tests I took. Finished with about 5 mins left.

VR - This one is a hit or miss. But idk I felt a little better about it. At least I didn't run out of time. Zoomed through that first passage.

BS - First few passages fairly straightforward then I hit that longg passage. Glanced over and decided to skip it. Finished rest of the questions with 15 mins to spare and spent those all on that one damn passage. Some of discrete we pretty trivial.

Btw can somebody tell me what that acronym meant? Or we can't do that due to AAMC's restrictions?

Hi,

So correct me if I am wrong but the Bio passages that were "lengthy" didn't require you do read EVERY SINGLE WORD like you do in verbal right? I mean you can extrapolate information from them which helps with the questions?

Yeah but they asked you questions from mostly every aspect of the passage so you ended up reading most of it anyway.

I was forced to void due to a computer glitch 🙁

:wow: WOW. Hopefully it works out man. I'm sorry

PS: Very challenging. I was suprised by this section. I would not be surprised if I did not do well.
VR: Seemed easier than aamc 10 and 11 to me. Who know for sure really though.
BS: Seemed to be the most straight forward section on the test.

What do you all do to keep your mind off the MCAT for the next 30 days?

Just got out. Will write a more detailed evaluation later on today.

All I can say was that the PS was beyond crazy. Hoping for a 7+

PS: extremely calculation heavy, required a bunch of background knowledge for some formulas. I have no idea how I did. I know I had to guess on three of the questions (that random ass unit question wtf)

Verbal: Somehow seemed more straightforward and slightly easier than the AAMC practice exams. Maybe it played to my strengths, as I absolutely hate non-psych social science stuff and this exam didn't seem to have much of them. Then again, my verbal scores are usually all over the place, so I have no clue how I did.

BS: Reminded me a lot of AAMC 11, the way they did the experiments and questions. Some passages were no question tough due to difficulty in deciphering the experiments. Somehow, I finished with 25 min remaining, so I had more time to go back to the experiment questions and double check. Edit: crap I found that blood passage online and realized I interpreted it completely wrong 🙁

Overall, I have absolutely no idea how I did, nor do I want to make any assumptions.

I took April 5th's exam and scored an 11/13/8, I had 15-20 minutes of extra time on all three sectio.

Today's exam

PS - I thought it was pretty challenging, especially the chem part. It was very different from my first exam. There were maybe 3 questions I had to guess on. The questions were very similar to Berkeley Review Physics/Chem. Before taking the exam I was hoping for a 12/13, right now I'm aiming for an 11 like last time. I hope there's a solid curve and I didn't make any stupid mistakes

Verbal - I thought it was easier than most of the practice exams I took. I've always enjoyed verbal and feel better than I did last time coming out of it (I don't know how I got a 13 last time). There were a couple questions I was unsure about and managed to narrow down to two choices. Hoping 11/12 this time around, although I'm kinda wary about the curve.

Bio - The only reason I decided to retake. I had an absolute horrendous bio section last time that destroyed me. I feel 100 times better about it this time around. I felt good about almost all the discretes, but there was one harder passage that took a while to figure out. I had a beast of an orgo passage last time + some crazy orgo discretes that I had to guess on when I took the exam April 5th, this time around the orgo was tons easier. I studied primarily for bio/orgo this time around and feel like it definitely paid off. Hopefully an 11/12 There was also a passage that was extremely similar to a passage from Berkeley bio

Trial - I got the Sociology/Psych one I got last time. I tried last time didn't get my money (I think i finished too fast), so I sat around for maybe 10 minutes before submitting

Difficulty -
PS>>>>Verbal>BS

Also the finger scanner wasn't working properly for a good amount of time, so I couldn't leave the testing room during one of my breaks

PS- honestly didn't think it was too bad. I think it played to ALOT of my strengths though. No idea what acronym you all are talking about, so I either didn't read the question right or I knew the acronym, most likely the former.
VR- HA this section...wow I don't even have words for it. Never a strong subject for me but I really didn't feel good about this one. Didn't get to read the last two passages so I'm sure that did not help, just hoping my guessing skills were alright today. Passages were fairly interesting to read...for once but when they are easy to read they come with not so easy questions.
BS- not too bad, although I found myself saying "oh, I didn't think we had to know this" a couple of times which is always extremely frustrating

Guess we'll see in 30-35 days. Counting down the hours already.

I thought physics was really difficult. The first two paragraphs were really challenging but the questions did let up as the section continued. I'm hoping for a 10.

Verbal seemed super easy- the passages were interesting and it seemed like the questions focused on the purpose of the passage a lot, which is a bit easier for me rather than scattered details.

Really not sure about bio. There were two passages that were tough to understand. the remaining were reasonable.

After months of studying, all I know is that this glass of wine is delicious.

Congrats on finishing the test everyone 🙂 best of luck

Those of you feeling good about verbal, whats your reading technique?
All of the passages about art/literature started to kill me and I struggle to focus on remembering the names of people and what the central point is.

I ran out of time on the PS section...and I have been freaking out about whether or not I missed a whole page of discrete questions or not (I didn't look at the question number). So I was wondering if anybody remembers whether or not the PS section ended with discrete questions or a passage?

Thanks!

don't they always end on discretes? am i just making this up because i'm so sleep deprived?

Every section always ends with 3/4 discretes.

PS: HARD PHYSICS! I am a chem major, and the gen chem wasn't bad so hopefully it salvages it. The only time I have been below ten was a diagnostic so I will be super pissed if I did not manage at least a ten. I was pretty relaxed throughout though so hopefully I wasn't doing as poorly as I feel like I did now. I'm cranky and tired.

Verbal: Pretty straightforward. I thought it was much easier than AAMC 11. Every time I have done verbal I have gotten a ten or eleven so I am hoping to pull an eleven.

BS: I felt so much better about this! I actually sat back, relaxed, and took the last few sections nice and and slowly to ensure no dumb mistakes. Hopefully I get a super high score to offset any of the PS problems.

PS: Felt really good about it. Only had to guess on one cause I didnt know wtf the unit of measurement was

VR: Thought it was surprisingly easy

BS: Started out ok then the passages just got insanely long and difficult. Even the discretes were hard

My prediction 11/12/8-10. Will update in 30 days and see how close my guess was.

Took the 4/5 test, got 7, 9, 9 - 25. overall I feel that I was much more careful, confident, and did not get fatigued today compared to 4/5, but I still feel like s*.

My AAMC average under testing conditions in the last two weeks was a 30 (avg: 9, 10, 11), and was able to bring my PS up to a 10 on two of them (forget which ones). But I swear that the MCAT writers employed some sadistic physics loving sociopaths recently according to other MCAT forums from this year and also because the physics today was calculation heavy and they put they most difficult (IMHO) passage first. GenChem normal difficulty level. I had to guess and put "B" on ~2 questions from the first passage which I purposely saved for last because I ran out of time. Praying for a 8+ which is the minimum I need for my top choice school according to MSAR.

Verbal... expecting a 10 but this was my best Verbal I feel that I have ever done (only guessed on two) so a 11+ would be nice.

Bio.... ugh they had some discretes on a particular topic which I didn't review recently and didn't really come up on any of the AAMCs so that tripped me up. I feel like there were over 9000 questions literally on that same topic across a passage and a few discrete questions and I forgot my definitions. Ughhh. Best BS on AAMCs was a 13, but I am praying I broke a 10 on this one. Ochem was a LOT easier than 4/5 MCAT and I only guessed on one Ochem question.

Can people say what broad topics where on it without any specifics? Ie. Evolution, Molecular Biology, Immunology

Can people say what broad topics where on it without any specifics? Ie. Evolution, Molecular Biology, Immunology

One thing I have learned is that everything on the AAMC guidelines for the test is fair game no matter how obscure or "low yield" the topic may seem.

So I have had some time to think about the test and reflect on it. Here are my thoughts and predictions:

PS: I was actually very surprised at the level of difficulty of this section. I am a Physics tutor and I even had some trouble with the Physics passages. There were more Physics passages then Gen Chem (which I was very surprised about). The discrete questions were alright. Overall, it was very calculation heavy. I cut it close with time and had to make some guesses on 2 passages. Definitely not the best way to start the test. Praying for a 8+

VR: After the PS I really needed the break and just did some breathing exercises and did some stretches. The other people on break were looking at me like I was crazy, but oh well! Anyway, the VR was very straightforward. I was able to get through every passage and I felt as though the questions were very fair. Nothing caught me off guard. Overall, vey happy with the VR because the passages were clear. Only one passage was a little bleh. I left it for last and had 6 mins to work with it. Hopefully get a 10+

BS: Hardly any Orgo in this section. The minimal Orgo stuff was super straightforward as well. Very happy about that since I am not that strong in Orgo. The Bio passages were gruesome. It was like reading research papers. Also, some of the discrete questions were surprising. Not because of difficulty, but because of the topic. Same with one of the Bio passages. All in all, finished the section and felt ok about it. Hoping for a 10+.

I am applying this cycle and we will see how things go when scores come out. Just in case, I am going to keep studying for the possibility of a retake. (If anything ONLY because of the PS section). This is my second time taking it, so really hoping to not take it again. I took it back in 2012 and got a 9/5/10 (Damn VR).

Plan for now is just relax and finish working on my apps.

How was this test compared to your last test? In terms of difficulty and diversity of topics (more ochem/more Chem/more physics, etc)
