*** The Official Maryland Class of 2020 Interview/Acceptance Thread ***

lol I think a lot of us are in the same position. I know this is the last week they are interviewing.

I have a feeling they are going to make a lot of acceptances next week as well as place many on the waitlist. This is just my opinion. I hope we get some news then.

I just wanna know where i'm going next year so I can start planning accordingly ya know? Just kinda stressful right now haha.

I Totally feel you. You're absolutely right. This whole process causes major anxiety. I went from being major depressed with no acceptances to a few acceptances and being really stressed out in just a week. I hope things finalize soon.

For those who interviewed recently, did someone mention when the next wave of acceptances will be released?

They didn't mention a specific date, just sometime in the next few weeks. Then more acceptances will go out after April 1st.

Temple as of now..I was accepted at Pitt as well but declined. If I get into Maryland I'll be going though.

What about you??

Hey thanks for getting back to me. I got accepted to Indiana and USC. Going with USC for now, bc I'm from LA although I haven't lived there in the last few years. It would be nice to go back.

However, If I get into Maryland I would go as well. Lol. So we are in the same boat. I intervened 11/17 and they have been silent since.

Where are you from?

Ahh I hope you hear soon! I'm from PA, and go to Pitt for my undergrad. Weather in LA would be better than Baltimore probably! Lol but I was so impressed with Maryland. I loved it!

It's beyond ridiculous at this point considering there are November interviewees that have been left in the dust
I know..I can't imagine waiting for that long. I'd imagine that they have to send something out soon though. I think it's been a while since they last sent out acceptances.

For those who accepted Maryland's offer, did you get anything besides the email saying thank you for accepting?

I got another letter in the mail a few days later with an official offer letter, but nothing about immunizations yet.

I dont recall them explicitly saying not to call and ask the status of the application. I actually sent them a letter of intent, email to my interviewer, and a phone call. I received my acceptance within the hour from the phone call. I think it actually shows the genuine interest to attend the school.

I think you're the anomaly.
they don't like a lot of calls and what not.
it's good to keep them updated on your progress (if you're still under review and you have something new to update your application with)
but i wouldn't be blowing up their phones by any means.

last year, i sent them letters of interest and my spring & summer grades.
I got wl in march, and that was the last i heard from them. (not even an email saying you didn't get picked from wl)

thankfully i got in this year, but this year i didn't email them at all.
i just applied, waited for invite to interview and waited for acceptance.

No interview, AADSAS not updated with rejection.

Sorry to hear. That makes sense bc last week was their last week of interviews. I hope we hear some news from them soon.

Has anyone that has interviewed at Maryland been rejected? Or does anyone know anyone who has?

I interviewed back in November, and I have not heard since. This waiting game is ridiculous. I need to start planing my life.

For those who have been accepted:
  • You will not find out info about immunizations, requirements, etc. until the early summer. Feel free to ask me about those if needed.
  • Your orientation is scheduled for August 17th to 19th, so block those days off now.
  • Join the class of 2020 facebook page! I would wait if you haven't been accepted yet! It's honestly a ton of D1s, D2s and D3s ready to tell you how much we love dental school and to enjoy your time between now and August.

For those still waiting:
  • KEEP BEING PATIENT! Don't call or e-mail unless it's a super important update, which is pretty unlikely at this time.
  • Maryland is an awesome school, but so are many others!
If someone has any lingering questions, feel free to ask! I'm full of knowledge 🙂

Hi @umbtoothfairy ! Do you remember the timeline of your interview to when you got accepted? I just interviewed recently, but I'm still curious! As you know, the waiting game is very stressful.

I applied to all 7 of my schools in June
I interviewed at 6 schools pre-December and had 1 scheduled for early January.
On "Decision Day," I was accepted to 4 schools, including Maryland.
I cancelled my post-December interview before winter break started and decided on Maryland before the holidays.

Stats (since I know that's the next question)
IS and I had approximately a 3.5 overall and science GPA, 20 AA on the DAT.
I can't remember my specific scores otherwise since it's been 2+ years.

Is it too much to ask what schools you applied to and where you interviewed?

Totally! I understand.

Why did you pick Maryland? Many of us are in that position now. How did it stand out compared to other schools?

- I am in-state and my family is nearby. Also the cost was one of the major reasons. Mini rant at the end of this post about that
- You can become in-state after first year!!!!! Not possible at every school
- Maryland is the first dental college in the WORLD, being the oldest, it is highly respected and obviously well-known
- Boards after 1st year and thus 3 months of summer break
- Amazing technology. We have a dream room, which you rarely get to go into during pre-clinic years (1/2), but having exposure to the latest technology is important in my opinion
- Demographic of Baltimore: the patients I see are much different than the ones I would see at schools in a more rural location
- The city: I love Baltimore. The O's, the food (YUM), the sports. It's a mini America. Drive a few hours west and ski or east and play at the beach. Go south and visit DC or go a little north/west and visit Trump supporters. Maryland overall is a great state to explore and Baltimore is honestly great (granted you know where you're going)

My advice
Go to the cheapest AND best school you can. Maryland OOS is expensive, but you can get IS after 1st or 2nd year if you play your cards right

Mini rant
- Dental school is one of the most expensive professional school educations. The average cost has increased by 300% in the last 15 years. Feel free to look up information. I attached a PDF from ADEA. It is totally disgusting.
- To put it in context, I pay in-state in 2015 what out-of-state students paid in 2010
- Tuition between the 2014-15 school year and 2015-16 went up 13% for in-state students. The highest % increase in the state. That came out to almost 4k in loans

EDIT: I posted prematurely

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it! I was just going to ask why you chose Maryland, but I see you answered that above. I was really impressed when I visited--I loved it and definitely could see myself there.

It is a good school and provides good opportunities

Excellent response. Thank you so much for your time.

Say I go to Maryland, I'm from California so I pay out of state for a year or two. How much does the total debt look like out of Maryland? I know I can find numbers out there but I would prefer to ask an actual student.

Thanks again for your time.

No problem! I am studying as I reply 😉

As an in-state student, I take out the following:
- 40,500 direct loan at 6ish%
- 15,000 Health Professions Loan at 5%
- Declined Grad PLUS loans
So about 55k per year before interest. I'm looking at 220k principal, which will be closer to 250-260ish with interest by the time I graduate

Out of state may be closer to 350ish if you get it after the first year and you take everything offered.

Anyone else get an email today saying they were selected for a housing scholarship? I'm also looking for insight from current students....do you think $2500 off per semester would be worth living in Fayette Square? I've researched it a bit but I wasn't sure what on-campus housing is like. Thank you in advance 🙂

No clue about housing scholarships, but I'd take it since that's about 400 a month of free money. Fayette is about 950 per month if you share an apartment, including cable, wifi, semi-furnished. It is a block or two from school and fairly popular amongst the first year students. Other students live in the rowhouses in Ridgley's Delight (neighborhood next to Camden Yards) where rooms are generally closer to 600-700 after utilities and a 10 minute walk maximum. The high rise apartments (redwood, centerpoint, zenith, etc.) are more expensive but nicer and closer to school. Some move to Fed Hill, which is also expensive and a bus ride 1-3 miles away from school.

For those of you who paid your second deposit... how/where did you pay it? I can't seem to figure it out.

I paid it the same way I paid the first deposit.

Hey does anyone know if there is a Facebook group or any other kind of group for accepted students? Also, do you guys know when we get more information on things that are required before admission??
