Long time poster...usually with pictures more than words.

Anyhow...wondering if there are any artsy anesthesiologists in the house.

My story: Almost went art major before medicine. Put it to good use though. Been illustrating surgical procedures and anatomy drawings for surgeons' publications. Currently doing a bunch of freelancing. Anesthesiology is awesome because it allows me to watch and sketch the procedures live...just like a still life...

Anyone here with similar interests? Would love to see your artworks and share experiences.

Here are samples of my works:

excellent work!
especially the last two pieces are truely remarkable.
Look like sketches...if not, very impressive!

very solid work. so my question is...in your up and coming portfolio, will you smoke a fat cigar and rock the chest hair like good old Frank H. Netter?

were you trained in medical illustration, or are have you just REALLY honed your sketching skills?
they are amazing🙂

Dude,

All I'm going to say is that Netter has nothing on you. You can make a LOT of money on the side doing medical illustrations for publications. We used an illustrator for a publication I did. (The guy was good, but he was an a-hole when I talked to him on the phone.) He got paid $400 per sketch. And, there were about 9 sketches in my piece alone.

Put your talent to monetary gain for yourself.

That is awesome...if there's one talent I wish I could have, it would be artistic ability. I don't do much beyond stick figures.

Hope you aren't so fixated on the drawing that you forget about watching your patient, though! 😀

Hello Tuss, wasn't trained in medical illustration. I started one day during anatomy class...lectures were boring. I had a minor in Fine Arts from undergraduate and missed my days/nights in my studio. I think it was a combination of social boredom & stress beginning medical school plus a recent break up, transition to a different city, and school work. Those things driven me to seek refuge in meditation and art. In a way when you are making artworks...you are meditating...there is a similar tranquility to both. Art was a great outlet...sucked the stress right out of me....eventhough I was up all night drawing...I feel good the next day. Also went to galleries, studios & live figure drawing sessions. It was great to have non-medicine social interactions.

wow $400 bucks a sketch?!!? crazy! that is a crime dude. I'm charging $100 per drawing with one revision. Took me only about 30mins - 1 hour per sketch so..I didn't want to overcharge the professors.

Dude... first of all, great work. Second of all, CHARGE MORE. A roommate of mine from college does medical illustrations for textbooks. Minimum charge per plate? 800 dollars. It takes him 1-2 hours per sketch.

Second, the only art I practice is "patient art". Anytime you walk through the ICU in the morning after rounds and see Ms. Jones in the fetal position, Mr. Roberts with his hands up over his head and his feet in the butterfly position, or Mr. Donnelly with his head bowed over his tracheostomy in the "Kumbaya stance", then you know Kraphty has been rounding on his patients 😉 Patient art friends.

Talent!!!... Blows my mind how many folks out there are talented in so many things in addition to medicine...👍👍

Awesome work!

I am seriously jealous. I used to love to draw and paint. It is a part of me that I lost as I began college. I was so focused on studying and keeping my grades flawless that I stopped drawing. I have since only really done quick sketches of anatomy to help explain things to others. People seem genuinely impressed, but I am sure you know what I mean when I say you really never realize how good you are. You are too close to the work. You only focus on the imperfections in your piece, or your percieved imperfections. Others see the work as a whole and can appreciate it from a distance.

I only took art classes during high school, but I was an airbrush t-shirt artist for a little while. That was alot of fun...man do I ever miss that part of my life. Not t-shirt painting, but just creating in general. I have a friend who is an artist. He keeps telling me that I should do medical illustration, but I honestly never thought there was any market for it. Maybe I should look into it. The problem is that I work ALOT. When I get home I just want to play with my kinds, and hang out with my wife.

One thing I do enjoy is that every holloween I do free airbrush facepainting for the kids at the community holloween party. I also just started carving pumpkins last halloweens. That can bee alot of fun and it is way easier than you think.

PS there are two versions of Ariel because the stupid squirrels ate the face of the first one. I didn't have much time so I left Flounder out of the second version.

Hello . It was great to have non-medicine social interactions.
.
boy aint that the truth. i encourage everyone to make as many friends outside of medicine as possible. although this forum is as good as it gets for diversity.

Wow. These sketches are ridiculous! For future sketch work for our publications how should we contact you... through your website I presume? Keep up the wonderful work.

Ender.....

man youre too talented to waste your time on this medicine gig!!!

That painting with glasses in it looks like a frikkin photograph!!😱

You got some serious talent... I love that sketch with the glasses... its amazing. You need to seriously consider secondary income from this... and take those things with you to the interview trail. Artistic people usually can see things, others can't. PDs will love you. Just make sure you leave out the part about doing it on the job.

Thanks for the complement, but the glass piece was done by Ifesiam. And I agree he is amazingly talented.

Hey, I just wanted to show off the mural I am working on for my son's bedroom. It is of Spiderman and eventually Hulk as well. I just finished Spidy. I used acrylic paint with a paint brush and then I did shading and highlights with an airbrush.

Ender,

That's just insanely impressive. I bet you have one happy son!🙂

Thanks man, but just wait till you see it with the Hulk! I am really excited about it. On a side note I learned that using Sharpie on a wall is a bad idea.

Have you displayed any of your work at the ASA Annual Meeting? They have an art exhibit every year with works by attendings, residents, spouses, and even some very talented kids.

Ifesiam, my humble prediction is you won't practicing Medicine in five-ten years. You should do residencey in NYC and hone your talent in your spare time maybe land an agent. My pre-med friend from college was an art major (photography) never went to med school (after recieving acceptences to Hopkins, Mayo etc) the art thing just took off after a talented agent got a hold of him. Last time we talked he wasliving a very nice life.

Maybe if I have something cool to show my department will send me to the ASA next year.

I think I learned that lesson when I was about 4 years old, although probably for different reasons! (That was a long time-out afterward.)

Your son will be one happy dude, Ender! 👍

I will definitely paint my future children's room full of stars, rockets, sun, moon, galaxies, colors of sunsets to twilight to dawn.

I just found out about ASA artworks display!!! Will submit for next year! I am too late for orlando.

Some of my future art related projects in residency:
1) Regional anesthesia illustrations
2) Pediatric Art therapy research
3) Utilizing art therapy in Palliative care/ Pain Management.
4) non-medical arts

Will definitely hone my skills, hopefully I don't have to get an MFA in medical illustrations. I think Dr. Netters doesn't have one either..... Long term goal will be illustrating an anatomy atlas to provide more options for future medical students.....probably by the time I'm 50-60 years old ...and teach anesthesiology!!!

keep up the art juice everyone!
